Coach Fox met with Hoops Boosters Last Night

The first hand account I got from the meeting last night was gushing in praise. There were 300-400 folks in attendance at the new basketball practice facility, and Coach Fox set the tone for the evening by personally working the door and greeting every person that walked in the facility.

IronDawg has a pretty good recap of the night posted on several message boards. If you're a UGASports.com subscriber their hoops board has additional insight into the evening.

My friends and family who attended were incredibly impressed with the entire coaching staff. If he can recruit 18 year old basketball players the way he's winning over fans, we'll be in good shape.

Speaking of that...there are positive rumblings on the UGASports.com hoops board about a commitment / transfer. When they confirm it, I'll link over.

Note: It's no secret that there had been discussion about the future of the UGA Tip Off Club. Would that group continue to move forward? Well...Coach Fox plans to join the club, and he's eager to see it become a success. So, that question has been addressed.

My favorite quote by Fox was:
"There's a star on the American flag and it's not for Georgia Tech or Georgia State. It's for Georgia and we are going to recruit with that in mind."
He received heavy applause for that one.

Sorry about all the typos. That thing was a mess.

Although it is absolutely light years before anyone can evaluate him as a successful hire, CMF has exceeded my expectations in just about every way. I don't have any delusions about making the tourney next year or having someone in the draft, but really, from day one he has absolutely changed the way people in Athens think about basketball. There's still plenty of work to be done, including quite a lot on the court, but CMF has been class every step of the way.

I'm not a UGASPORTS subscriber, but my guess on the possible recruit/transfer would be VT guard Hank Thorns, who has asked for and been granted a release from his scholarship by Virginia Tech. Below is a link regarding his release:

The Dawgs are indeed in good hands with Coach Fox. Everyone that has met him comes away impressed with his sincerity and competence.

I wrote a blog about the shared charisma of Coach Fox and Coach Richt a few weeks ago. Some of you may enjoy reading it.

Was there last night, and you got it pretty well Paul. Seeing that room packed, with folks lining the walls standing, it was quite a sight.

And I wouldn't expect either of the supposed Virginia Tech kids, at least not from looking at their #s while in Blacksburg. The rumored player has been discussed as a possible transfer before Triangle.

I keep hearing Glenn Robinson is the rumored player. He is from Tennesee State. Point guard that put up big time numbers at small school but also had good games when matched up against top level programs. Appears to just be a scorer.

Gerald Robinson of Tenn State. I linked to a profile on him two weeks ago.

Way to go, Chris Barnes. Fox gets his first real shot at discipline.

In defense of Chris Barnes......

If your insurance lapses, your registration gets suspended and it turns into a major snafu that would take any of us weeks to untangle.

It could happen to us all. Beats missing 1/2 a season for a joint.

Gerald Robinson it apparently is:

Gerald Robinson Jr., Tennessee State’s leading scorer last season, will transfer to the University of Georgia, his father confirmed Friday afternoon.

“That’s his call, and that’s where he’s decided to go,” Gerald Robinson Sr. said. “He’s been here for two years, and he’s going to try being away from home for a little while.”

(snip)

Man, did he have opportunities,” the elder Robinson said. “He had teams from the ACC and the SEC call. I’m still taking calls from teams and having to tell them he’s already made up his mind.

“He wanted a bigger challenge. Now he just has to go prove he can handle it.”

Great to get him and he addresses an immediate need.
