Headlines from the Ozarks

Let's take a look at what the Razorbacks are saying about Saturday night's game:
-- Battle Tested or Well Rested - Razorback Central asks the question for this game. Is UGA better prepared for this game via two strong opponents or are the Hawgs better prepared after starting off with Div I-AA Missouri State followed by a bye week. I like our polish. Someone said, "But Petrino has been planning for this game for 5 months." Yeah....did he acquire any new players during the bye week?

-- What to make of UGA - NWAOnline (which is oddly not a web site run by Jim Crockett and Dusty Rhodes), asks what to make of the Dawgs. It's a fair point, and I think a question all Bulldog fans are wondering as well. For everything good about the SC game, there's something bad.

-- What to make of ARK - Another good question from the Slophouse. As I've stated several times, the Hawgs were about 4 plays from being 2-10 last year. How good is this bunch really? With only a glorified scrimmage against Missouri State, they have just as many questions as we do. The HogBlog also explores the question of Arkansas' identity.

-- Focusing on UGA's offense - One of the problems with the Petrino has had 5 months to prepare argument....prepare for what? Offensively, we've run just about everything under the sun, and we haven't really stuck to anything. Defensively, we've tried everything and with wildly mixed results.

For a team giving up three turnovers a game, I am not sure how we will do in Arkansas. Throw in fake punts and directional kicking and I like our odds less. Go dawgs but . . .

It's not run by Dr. Dre and Ice Cube either.

I think the Georgia/Ark game will come down to special teams. Which team steps up and makes a big play or two. Who can avoid a blocked punt, kickoff return, etc.. I find it interesting that Boykin went 100 against the cocks last Saturday and Dennis Johnson took the opening kick 91 in the Hogs win against SouthwestGreatWhiteLionSnake Missouri. Arkansas definitely has the edge on offense. They simply have more depth and proven strength at running back. Mallett is head and shoulders above Cox. Even Tyler Wilson at backup is probably a better all-around QB. Georgia certainly has the edge on defense. again...may come down to a special teams play or two. Blair Walsh is a helluva filed goal kicker and Alex Tejada for the Hogs has had serious reliability issues dating back to last season.

When is the last time that UGA blocked a punt? Forget that..When is the last time we tried to block a punt?

The funny thing is, blocked punts and kicks were a hallmark of Richt's early years in Athens. What happened? Where'd they all go? In fact it was a n early blocked punt that got the ball rolling in our utter dismantling of Arkie in the SECCG in 2002.

I think a serious concern for Georgia has to be an absolute lack of knowing what the hell to prepare for. The Hogs have a new QB, more depth at running back, new receivers, as well as a new tight end to assist DJ Williams. The only game tape they have is a dismantling of FCS suckwas Missouri State, in which Petrino kept the playcalling as basic as could possibly be. Arkansas has some sppedsters on kickoff/punt return...Dennis johnson and Joe Adams. can the Dawgs maintain enough constant pressure on Mallett to make him committ errors? Special teams and the Dawgs pass rush will be the 2 biggest X factors in determining who wins this thing. I think Arkansas has an opportunity to put pressure on them early and really make them uncomfortable.

We blocked punts vs Bama and Arizona State last year. I believe it was Zach Renner both times, so it hasn't been to long since we blocked a punt

dawgy1,

There are a lot of things we did earlier this decade that we are not doing now.

2 SEC Championships then, 0 SEC Championships now.

The critical question that needs to be asked and addressed by Richt and Evans is, "What are we not doing that made us so effective then, and how do we get back to that level of play?".

sorry dawgly, also meant to include RC as well.

Losing Boss Baily and his 45-inch vertical probably contributed to a decline in blocks as much as anything...

Will-i call for the ghost of Boss everytime an opponent lines up to try a fg.

Also, Boss wouldn't have blocked nearly as many kicks now, as the rule is now in place that you can't use someone on your as a springboard and can't land on them (I think this is a college football rule, I know it's an NFL rule).

I'd like to see us actually defend a punt so the other team doen't run a gimme fake for a 1st down. That was the most reprehensible punt/play coverage I've ever seen. It's not a foregone conclusion the team will always punt the ball to you when it's 4th down.
