Lane Kiffin to Southern Cal

Breaking. And confirmed via multiple real sources. He's taking the entire family and Coach Orgeron to L.A. Holy shit. Best line of the night comes from a Vol fan on a rivals.com message board, "This is like divorcing a stripper."

Dear Southern Cal...if you're scared of the NCAA and looking for a sacrificial lamb like Mike Shula who will baby sit the program for 3-4 years while probation blows over, that's not a bad plan. You just don't hire a guy NCAA Compliance wants to kill to do the whole "under the radar low profile thing."

Chris Mortensen just nailed it on Twitter...they just about have to go after David Cutcliffe. Longer list of candidates is:
  • Will Muschamp
  • Gary Patterson
  • Jon Gruden - grad assistant for vols in mid 80s. Probably a pipe dream.
  • David Cutcliff
Chris Petersen of Boise is one weird dude. He's apparently not interested in this or much of anything other than Boise.

The Vols need to nail this in ~72 hours. That gives them almost 3 weeks to stabilize the class. The

As a buddy just said..."sort of makes our Defensive Coordinator search look like baby sh*t."

An insider on Tenn message board says they've already hired a head coach - ESPN says that Kippy Brown is interem though - this shit is unreal!!!!!

Just saw this elsewhere and came here.

Holy shit!

Monte and Coach O will apparently follow which is HUGE for USC. I like it for USC. Sucks for UT IMO.

Believe that you meant he's taking them to SoCal.

"Holy Shit"

haha, my thoughts exactly.

This whole situation is HILARIOUS!

Hahahaha couldn't have happened to a nicer group of people. And Vols thought he was going to take them to the Promised Land.

Holy shit is exactly the first thing that came to my mind. What a debacle in Knoxville.

I'm not scared of Cutcliffe unless Archie Manning has an illegitimate son in high school who will follow him around. There's no way he'll recruit as well as Kiffy & Co.

Garner is Definitely moving to knoxville now.

HaHaHaHaHaHaHa!!! Nothing sucks like a big orange! Makes me feel a little bit better about our search for a DC.

Watch out for Peterson from Boise State!

I love having CMR as our coach.

This season has been boring football wise but it is easily one of the most interesting off the field seasons i can remember.

good riddance.

This literally just made my night. Words fail me, but i'm absolutely giddy at the thought of big, orange, corn-syrup tears streaming tonight.

I bet Tubberville wants to jump off a cliff about now....

Don't laugh or poke fun people. I know it's hard, but don't do it. This is a blessing for UT. What has happened is that they've saved themselves a few years of mediocrity with Kiffin and have fast-forwarded to hiring an experienced bad-ass who can actually bring home the title.

Now they could still f*ck this up, but there are alot of good coaches that would rather follow dumb-ass Kiffin than Phil Fulmer. I expect them to make a damn good hire.

I guess the "wet heat" was just too much for Kiffy.

I hate Tennessee, passionately, but that's pretty shitty of Kiffy. Oh well, suck it!

Russ Fortson said...

Well, Kiffin was right. Tennessee will never lose to Georgia while he's coaching there.

Trey said...

PLEASE, hire Cutcliffe. That is the only reasonable hire. Do it, Hamilton... heh.

steps out of one athletic department that is a septic tank off the field and right into another one.

I really don't see them making a big time hire of a "badass" Jaxdawg, they already missed out on tubs

Just makes me feel proud CMR is our coach. A lot can be said for someone who does what is right and doesn't leave a blazing pile of shit behind them.

Oh Lord please, send Mike Leach to UT.

Can anyone say Kirby Smart to Tennessee? It could happen.

Richt and co. need to swoop in on Jawuan James, since most of UT's recruits will likely jump ship.

Troy Calhoun was a real possibility last time - maybe now.

Crane said...

Anyone but Muschamp.

JackSpratDawg said...

Kind of doubt they will go after Cutcliffe. Didn't he have some health/heart issues at Ole Miss? The stress level at Duke is far less than at UT....

Re: Chris Peterson being a weird dude

I nothing odd about Peterson not being interested in USC or UT.

1) Both are being investigated by the NCAA. Why go to a program that is going to be handcuffed in terms of scholarships and bowl games? In neither conference is that going to be an easy time period.
2) Coming all the way across the country to take the UT job makes no sense at all. He would have to hire some southern coaches to help with recruiting since he has no connection to the area. Remember Kiffin hired Orgeron (a killer recruiter) and the fellow from Bama to recruit.
3) While USC is closer, the same recruiting issues arise.
4) In the case of USC, the "Wooden Rule" applies. (It can also be called the "Bear rule"): Never follow a legend. Not sure Carroll is quite at legendary status, but he is close enough.
5) Look at the struggles other coaches have had in making the jump from non-BCS schools to BCS schools. Specifically he can look to see the struggles Dan Hawkins has had at CU. In fact, that is the perfect example as Hawkins came into a job reeling from recruiting scandals and self-imposed restrictions (that the NCAA accepted).
6) Hawkins again. I gotta think he and Hawkins talk. The demands on a BCS coach especially at upper tiered/big tradition schools goes way beyond what he probably has to do at Boise. The demands on his non-football time would increase.
7) Lifestyle: I have read a lot about Peterson. I really like what I have read (have to be careful that one does not think one knows a person just based on what they read, see Tiger Woods). He really seems to like Boise (having been there I can see why to be honest. You have to like what Boise has to offer. If you want glamour and celebrities then Boise is not the place, but if you want a place with no crime and great outdoor activities then Boise is pretty nice). The Boise folks are paying him pretty well (considering the cost of living).

Maybe Peterson likes his job and is not a person who starts looking for the next job as soon as he gets one. People on blogs (and yes some of you) talk about loyalty. It is a 2 way street (and one can argue a 3 way in the case of a coach as you have to include the players). I find it funny that PWD thinks it is weird that a fellow might like his job and where he lives and is not Meyer, Petrino or Saban. Give me Peterson (and Richt?) any day.

Maybe he sees a chance to do something really amazing like playing for a BCS title or winning it at BOISE STATE. Now that would be something. Heck maybe more impressive than winning a BCS title at Bama or USC.

I applaud Peterson for staying with the kids he brought in rather than bolting like Kiffin.

This says much more about Tennessee than it does Kiffin. How they thought it was a good move to hire that clown in the first place is beyond me.

I am thrilled he's going to SC. Pete Carroll may have set the house on fire before running out but Kiffin is going to drop an ass load of napalm on the entire neighborhood.

And, Sam, you forgot, but Boise - despite the violence inherent in the system - is poised to play for the national title next year if they win out. It's likely they could start at 2-4 in the polls.
