A Season Opener in the Georgia Dome?

Last night, Damon Evans said that he'd like open a future season in the Georgia Dome as part of the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Classic. He obviously wasn't talking about this season, but he is interested in a future date.

Considering the game is booked for 2010 and 2012, the next obvious slot available is 2011. Unfortunately, we have the pointless series with Louisville starting in Week 1 of that season.

The next available seasons where we could play a neutral site game and still maintain at least six home games in 2014 and 2016. Of those, 2016 is the most appealing to me because we dodge Bama and LSU those years. Well...actually...the most appealing option is playing there in 2011 and dumping Louisville.

I'm all for appearing in that game.

We could always make it a 3 game series with Clemson and play the 14 or 16 game in the dome. If not Clemson. Of course, it would not be a bad idea to play Tech there either and get a cupcake or bye week before the SECC game weekend.

Interesting idea. Although, I'd prefer to play someone out of region so they didn't benefit from the Atlanta recruiting exposure.

i've seen clemson thrown around here and on the ajc. I don't think they should be the target, i think that game should always be home and home.

i'm more open for fsu, miami, or some team with a national brand to come in and play.

i like the tech idea only if they replace their home game with the dome. It doesn't have to be a 50/50 split. There is just more demand for that game than their little stadium can handle. Of course I don't think they agree with that but they may like the money it brings

I just don't get the hate for the L'ville game.

Agree somewhat, PWD, but who in their right mind is going to come to Georgia, to play in the Georgia Dome, vs Georgia, without a return trip?

I don't see us drawing a BIG name under those circumstances.

Also of note he said he'd like to have 7 home games. That is something that I find appealing.

I get the whole play in the Dome thing, but I'm not sure the payoff for us is as big as Bama or LSU.

On a home game weekend we already get a lot of local coverage (print and video) so other than national coverage what does the Dome really get us?

I'm not against playing in the Dome, but I'm just not convinced that it gets us very much.

Well, I'm not sure of the scheduling possibilities, but I would say "nay" if it sacrifices another home game in Athens.

The only upside I see is that it keeps a team from getting exposure in GA. Otherwise, why go there? The Dome is not a very nice place. It is smaller than most stadia UGA plays in.

If the Florida game wasn't in stupid Jacksonville this would be a hell of a lot easier.

Stupid Jacksonville.

I understand that Louisville isn't the opponent right now that they were when we signed with them. But I'm not into breaking contracts. There are many schools that do, and I'm proud to say that UGA isn't do business that way. Especially since we actually took Tulane to court over breaking the 2 for 1 deal we had with them starting in 2002.

It's not that easy to come up with a permanent OOC model. But if I could snap my fingers and make it happen, I'd want to be able to find a way to play in the Kickoff Classic as often as they will let us, have 2 intersectional road games per decade, and play 1 series with Clemson per decade.

The only problem with this is that our participation in the Kickoff Classic might end up being a situation where we have to visit the other school at some point like the way the basketball team used to do with the Kuppenheimer Classic. I never liked that idea. I'd rather do a straight up home and away series than that.
