Stand by Your Man

Putting aside Clay Travis' histrionics interesting take (go find your own link) over what Coach Richt 'might have said' during the exchange, I do have a bone to pick with Richt.  Dude.  Stand by your man.

Hey, I get you are trying to diffuse a situation.  I get that Franklin is Jim Schwartz a whiny titttybaby for getting so up in arms over anyone saying anything after all of the shenanigans his team pulled during the game.  I also get you need to man up and apologize for things getting out of control.  I am sure commiserating with the crying child is not the right way to go.

Not the best moment for Coach.

UPDATE:
Ok, I've had an hour to mull over the video (and to watch it again several times).  After doing so, I have calmed down and also removed the hittroll's link above.  If you want to read Clay Travis, you can find it on your own.

As for my further thoughts, my problem with Richt remains his giving Franklin a passie to calm him down.  Thinking about the heat of the moment, Richt was just trying to get off the field when Franklin starts his soliloquy on respect.  He just said whatever to get him to quiet down.  The harsh 20/20 of hindsight says he should have smiled, said nice game, sorry about the confrontation...or 'WHAT IS YOUR DEAL?!?'...either would have been fine...and gotten his team to the locker room.

I'm still not happy about the comment, but I believe Richt wasn't intentionally taking Franklin's side over Grantham's.  No way he could have since he could have had any of the facts outside of the few that are sprinkled into JFrankies fit.

Yeesh. I'm guessing Richt knew he was on camera and simply decided to keep his (and our) hands clean. Still, I'd watch out for the new meme. Richt's always been viewed as almost too cool & reserved, but it was assumed that there was steel under the calm. Apologizing to James Franklin's hissy fit doesn't exactly show "steel."

Hopefully this will all be forgotten when we saw Barrett Trotter and backup into 8 pieces.

Richt needs to grow a pair of balls. No wonder we lose to Florida every year.

do you think that's really what he said? I tried to read the lips and it sure looks like it...

if so, He's like that friend in college that whenever your group of friends got into a heated exchange at the bar with strangers was always "diffusing" the situation by making his own friends look bad

that's a fire-able offense in my opinion.

Good thing he is retiring after the season to do mission work.

BTW, I hadn't read any of the comments before I posted the update (intentionally), so it isn't in response to anyone's comments.

I think Richt can't stand situations like this and I think Grantham and CMR played right into Franklin's hands. He got his 15 minutes of fame. Maybe 16 depending on Slive's reaction.

I'm glad it didn't resort to fisticuffs. But I'd be lying if I said that I didn't want to see Todd effin' Grantham pull Franklin's tighty whiteys over his head and knee him in the danglies for good measure.

I don't know. Richt was obviously thrown completely off guard. And I would still rather him handle it with class then extending the confrontation further. I just think too much is being made over this.

This is typical Richt. Passive and soft.

Im fine with him being apologetic and trying to get off the field. I admire his class as I always have.. the thing that bothers me more than anything in this ENTIRE situation, more than franklin going after our player is the fact that CMR appears to have called one of our own a dumba**. Its fine to diffuse things by apologizing, but dont insult your own players. If indeed thats what he said, that is fire-able. What recruit is going to be okay with that type of "loyalty"

In a society where civility is a bit on the decline.... Look, I luv coach Grantham, I certainly am not a Richt hater. If you think Richt's calm demeanor is what causes us to lose to Fl. Uh.... Coach Dooley never screamed at an opposing coach. We whipped there asses continually throughout his tenure. I was there for every game, i know. I am not saying coach Grantham should be vilified either. Yet, we do need to demonstrate discipline under fire. Franklin is a titty-baby. so, recognize it and keep your freaking dignity. Get your boys, who just played very undisciplined and get your arse to the locker room like men! Let the team there know, you got there back. This is not baseball, where a coach like Bobby Cox can get ejected and fire up the team. This is very emotional, game. You can't set that kind of example under football circumstances. Real men don't lose there cool over a titty baby fit. They save going ape-shit for more important times, like saving one's family from a killer. Despite popular rhetoric of the day men, showing one's arse does not indicate a bigger set of balls!

CMR was trying to get everyone off the field. The last thing he or we need is a suspension for the florida game because a player can't control his emotions.

What's better? To try and win an argument right then and there and lose a player or two for the next game because someone gets into a scuffle? Or is it better to just get off the field FAST and sort it out later? I think CMR did well considering the situation he was in and how much time he had to actually think it through. I guarantee you he was thinking about wanting all his players amd coaches available for UF. Smart move, IMO.

Joey, I've watched it about 10 times and don't get 'he's a dumb-ass' from it any more than I get any other mumbled two word answer like 'shouldnta done that' or 'professor Dumbledore.' If you think a man that stopped a speech and apologized for saying 'hell' would call his own player a dumb-ass to another coach with cameras on him, fine.

Clay Travis would find a way to imply Richt is having an affair with a goat, if given the chance. He is a dumb-ass (not mumbled and said with great enunciation). Unless the league comes out and dings Richt for his language or he explicitly apologizes for it, I'll think he said any number of things other than 'he's a dumbass.'

Why did Richt have to apologize in order to "diffuse the situation"? All he had to do is say something like "I'll look into it. Good luck next game."

When I was watching it on mute it was hard to tell, but after watching it with the volume up it sure does sound like he said it.

Also- Mark Richt does indeed cuss, I have a couple of friends on the team that have talked about getting cursed out multiple times. He just is classy and doesnt want to do it in the public eye

If you already have the notion in your head that he says "dumbass" then that's the only thing you're going to see and hear when you watch the video.

All you people who think CMR getting in the face of Franklin at that time and place and accomplishing anything, are idiots. CMR had nothing to gain and all he needed to do was what he did. Diffuse it in any means neccessary and talk to Franklin at a later time when he had regained his mind. We don't know what was said in their phone conversation Sunday.

Grantham seems to have turned our defense around a good bit and I love his fire and passion. We need it. But he's also a clown at times. CMR balances that out and there is a way to carry yourself when you are the face of not only the football program but the University as well. I'd like to see more energy and excitement from CMR at times, but not then.

Well said JJBA. You are 100% correct. I love what Grantham is doing with the defense, but I am tired of being embarrassed by his short temper. Losing your cool is hardly the stuff you want to teach your players.

Tony Waller said...

Is it safe to assume none of you would want Will Muschamp, had he not gotten Gatortainted?

Erik said...

The fact that Richt immediately apologized for Grantham without hearing his version of the story tells me one of two things. He's either a total pushover or he immediately ASSUMED Grantham was guilty b/c he already thought he was too emotional.

Or maybe it tells me both.

Kdawg said...

Absolutely not. The troops would have been clamoring for Mushchamp's fire. His tirades would be justified followed by DGD no doubt.

Its hard to be objective after a few terrible seasons, a mountain of disappointment and an embarrassing Vandy game, but we owe it to CTG to relax and assume he knows that he is an adult.

I can honestly say I would not want Muschamp. When everyone started bringing coaches up last year when we were struggling, he was no where near my top 5. I think hes a good coach and recruiter but thats not the guy I want leading the program I root for. I'm not saying hes not a great coach, I just think we could do better.

But this is also coming from a person that is a huge Mike Leach fan.

Looks like Richt doesn't give a rat's ass about what Franklin is saying. To me sounds like its oozing with sarcasm. Go Richt.
