You Can Only Hope to Contain Kirby Smart
Sometimes, I think Scott Sinclair has the hardest sideline job in football.
There is nothing about this picture that I don't love. Even Aaron Feld is perfectly framed here. By the way, any doubt one of the lesser heralded upgrades with Smart's hire is featured in the picture?

Rose or Sugar?
It's one or the other.
For my money, let's go to Pasadena. We have a path to the Sugar Bowl in nearly ever season. We haven't been in the running to go to the Rose Bowl but once in the last 70+ years. Plus, we've never played Oklahoma.
Yesterday was one of those other worldly days. I spent several hours after the game randomly exclaiming some variation of 'Holy Crap!' due to the memory of the SEC Championship Game sneaking up on me.
Admit it, you did, too.

Anatomy of an Interception
One of the things I was most worried about going into the Mississippi State game was how Fitzgerald was capable of using his legs to hurt aggressive defenses. Giving credit where it is due, Georgia did a fantastic job of keeping him in front of them and delivering strong messages that running isn't the best choice when he made that decision.
However, there was one play in the third quarter that was emblematic of the usefulness of not delivering that big hit message.
If the video doesn't start at 1:17, go there. Mississippi State is first and ten and opts to run Fitzgerald on a designed keeper that gains about two yards that ends with him getting chased out of bounds. The rub: it was from the left hash mark to the wide side of the field. That is a 45+ yard run to gain two yards.
Fitzgerald then attempts a pass on an out pattern that was thrown wide of his receiver. Not taking away anything from Baker's very good read on the play, but it was a throw that a QB with fresh legs has a bit more touch on.
Extrapolating that to what Tennessee wants to do, we won't likely see Dormady run like that...unless we make him. Tennessee will hope to establish a running game with Kelly to set up looks for Dormady down field. Dormady is much less comfortable facing pressure than Fitzgerald is, so getting to him early and often makes plays like Baker made that much more likely.

My Favorite Series Last Night
This is about pride:
2-10 UGA 22 Thompson,K. pass complete to Thomas,Deddrick for 20 yards to the UGA2, 1ST DOWN MS (R. P15
LeCounte).
1-G UGA 02 Hill,Kylin rush for 1 yard to the UGA1 (Malik Herring;Juwan Taylor).
2-G UGA 01 Hill,Kylin rush for loss of 1 yard to the UGA2 (Monty Rice).
End of game, clock 00:00.
10 plays, 46 yards, 3:00
That pure standing up and saying you won't do this tonight, despite it not mattering to the outcome. That is what teams going places do.
As impressive as everything else that happened last night was, that was the most impressive series to me.

Mississippi State Bulletin Board Alert
Reading over a Jackson Clairon-Ledger article on former UGA turned Bizzaro Dawg Johnathan Abram, this jumped out at me:
“It will be a great feeling,” Abram said. “To get a chance to go between the hedges but on the opposite side ... I mean, I just look forward to going in with my team and, honestly, just beating the brakes off of them.”
That's cool and all, but I'll still take another one point, win.

This is What I Want to See Tomorrow
(NSFW lyrics)
In all seriousness, we have 17 more points of talent than App State. No disrespect intended, but that is how I see it. Tomorrow is nothing less than an evaluation on how Kirby and his staff are progressing as teaching coaches, and could be the same for Kirby as a game planning coach.
Here's to getting after it.

A New Hope
Fitting last post of 2016, IMO.
If you want an idea of what Kirby Smart's vision of Georgia football is going to be, look at Georgia's second half possessions:
If you are keeping score at home, that's two drives that come off defensive wins (fumble recovery and missed FG), a game winning drive, and game sealing drive. Not to mention three drives of 7+ plays and over 3:30+ possession. Say what you want, that's been the plan all along and it wasn't a terrible way to end 2016.
Go Dawgs.

Is a bowl on the line?
I think it is a fair question. So does Bill Connelly:
| Date | Opponent | Opp. S&P+ Rk | Win Probability | Proj. W-L | Proj. Margin | Proj. Score | Cumulative Proj. Wins |
| 29-Oct | vs. Florida | 9 | 13% | L | -19.5 | 13.5 - 33.0 | 4.13 |
| 5-Nov | at Kentucky | 77 | 49% | L | -0.6 | 26.3 - 26.9 | 4.61 |
| 12-Nov | Auburn | 8 | 16% | L | -17.3 | 17.8 - 35.0 | 4.77 |
| 19-Nov | UL-Lafayette | 109 | 78% | W | 13.3 | 33.2 - 19.9 | 5.55 |
| 26-Nov | Georgia Tech | 55 | 45% | L | -2.1 | 25.9 - 27.9 | 6.00 |
If you are keeping score at home, his stats only show Georgia as a favorite in one more game this summer. More stunning to me is that they have us as an underdog at Kentucky and at home vs. Georgia Tech.
No one ever said greatness would be easy.

This is a start...
I've been on about a leadership void in Georgia's locker room considering the lack of upperclassmen. Well, this qualifies as brighter news in that regard:
TW
(h/t Berniedawg)
“I hope it’s a tough few weeks,” junior outside linebacker Lorenzo Carter said. “I plan on pushing our players. The leadership is going to push our players and if you’re not ready to respond then that’s going to be a rough two weeks for you. We’re going to come out in these two weeks and work. That’s all we can do is grind.”Not so much for the ball player patois, but because of who delivered it. Carter is exactly the guy you'd like to see step up, IMHO. I grant he may have been doing it all season, but in a week when it looked like the team hadn't practiced two things they knew they'd see (kickoffs and a screen pass to Ralph Webb), I'll take anything.

You know, I'm not much on blegs, but this is a great reason to give to UGA. I have an original Jack Davis in my office. His work is quite easily the most recognizable of all UGA art.
The scholarship will got to support and undergraduate student majoring in art, with a passion of illustration. You know, someone like Mack Williams.

UGA Hoops Update
UGA is starting to play like the top 40 RPI team we were hoping they would be. After winning a tough game Saturday against Georgia Tech, they manhandled Clemson last night.
Those are the types of games you mess around and lose that get you seeded 11th or on the outside looking in in March.
On the Waitin' Since Last Saturday Podcast, Will Leitch said he thought 7-3 was the low end of the OOC, while I thought it was the high end. Turns out, absent a terrible loss against Robert Morris on December 29th, we were both right.
One last thing, Stegeman was packed last night. With the students gone. If you haven't been to a game in a while, come out. It's fun to win.
TW
While the win over Tech was a great win, as Tech is a top 100 or so RPI team, the Clemson win was more illustrative. Clemson came into the game in the 200s in RPI. This is the first team UGA has faced below the 150s (UTC, Oakland, Kansas State, and Seton Hall are all top 100). I was looking for a win like this versus an over matched team, because early on, we hadn't shown we could control a game against a team we should beat going away. I'm looking at you High Point game.DAWGS WIN! UGA defeats Clemson 71-48 in the final game before Christmas! And Richt indicated it’s not just an experiment for specialized situations. He’s prepared to put in Hicks in any situation. Hicks worked thereLet's be clear, seeing Quayvon in at TB is going to make me feel certain things in my nether regions because he's a grown ass man who is a tough tackle in the open field. I don't see him supplanting Marshall for the back up spot behind Michel, but damn if a jumbo package with him and Douglas on the field at the same time isn't sexy.
“Mainly because he’s played a lot of plays in his career,” Richt said. “We’ve trained him in the past at that position, and he’s got some pretty good running skills. He’s a physical back and he’s also probably a better pass protector as well. So that’s the kind of guys we want to go into a game with.”

Throwing on first down
Seemed like a good idea this week.
So yeah. Good time to throw it indeed. It also was a huge factor in us only facing four 3rd downs the whole game. Hell, we only faced 20 2nd downs. UGA played 61% of all offensive plays on first down. Just a spectacular game called by Schottenheimer and executed by Lambert and the offense.
