Some would argue that this is a non-story given that "it's just Marshall." And it's not like he's announcing that he's going to be open on Sunday or anything.
But still...Chick-Fil-A? I mean NOBODY loves that place more than me. I probably ate there three times last week alone. But leaving the magical world of college football to peddle yard bird?

A rather disconcerting comment on Marshall football in the post-Pruett era. And didn't Bob Pruett leave rather abruptly himself, for reasons nobody could quite figure out?
I don't think it is that odd of a story. I love college football but the job security as an assistant is not that great, you don't get to spend time with your family (he looks as if he has young family) and how much do you think he is making as a assistant at Marshall?
Owning a franchise of a successful QSR brand like Chick-Fil-A practically prints money and they are closed on Sunday so he can spend time with the family.
Even if he decides to get back into coaching down the road, if the outlet is profitable he will be able to sell it for seven figures easy. Do you think anyone is going to buy him out of his Marshall's assistant job for that kind of money?
Lest we forget, we have a certain ex-UGA head coach who has never gotten back into the coaching ranks because he is making so much money by owning every Zaxby's from here to Hahira.
Like others say, It's kind of funny, but he just had a kid, and aside from family desires, you can probably make more owning a ChikFilA than as a college assistant at a mid major.

I don't know what kind of restaurant ownership you guys are thinking of but the kind I've been pretty familiar with probably leaves less time with your family than being an assistant football coach. At least football coaches get an offseason (albiet a very hectic offseason). Sure he can hire folks to run every aspect of the restaurant but then he's almost certainly not going to be profitable for a very long while.
Running a restaurant is the most time consuming profession I can think of.

just a few thoughts on Chic-fil-A operators, a topic on which I am peculiarly well informed (I'm not one myself, but I know and have represented LOTS of them)
1. He won't OWN the CFA. It's not a franchise. The company owns ALL the stores. He puts up a fairly trivial amount, and they let him run it and basically split the profits with him. That's great, as long as CFA corporate likes you. If they decide they want to get rid of you, or you violate the terms of your agreement with CFA (in their opinion), they can terminate you immediately and give you back your nomimal sum. You dont build any equity in the business, and you cant sell it to anyone else.
2. You can make a lot of money as an operator if your store does well. However, if you have any hassles with taxes, labor, etc...that's all YOUR problem. CFA corporate doesnt hire anyone to help you, and they dont pay any of your bills. You are responsible for everything that happens at your store, and you are expected to have an active role in the running of it.
3. After several years, if your store has performed at a sufficient level of sales, you may be allowed to move to a more productive store (if they have an opening for an operator), or you may be allowed to operate an additional store (this wasnt always the case, because they didnt want you to be distracted from running your store)
4. Your agreement limits, to a great extent, what other businesses you can be involved in while operating a CFA (and if they find you are engaged in another business, they probably will fire you).
Truett Cathy was (and still is) a nice man with a vision. He wanted all his operators to get rich right along with him. He hasnt been involved in the day to day operations of CFA for a while. I'm not so sure the next generation is quite as nice, or quite as concerned for their operators, as the founder.
This coach will work hard, and he'll earn whatever he makes, but he wont have to travel and he'll have Sundays off. Potentially, he'll earn a lot more than he could make as an assistant at Marshall. He wont have any more job security, though...unless he continues to produce, same as in college football.
What's so strange about a college football coach leaving the profession to work in fast food? I'm pretty sure that Bill Oliver served me my Cinnamon Raisin Biscuits at the Hardee's Drive-thru last week. However, that's actually considered a promotion from being the HC at Auburn.
