One Guy's Take on the Georgia Program

Defense wins championships. Image: Hipple

When I interviewed the Colorado Rivals.com guy last week, one of the things he and I talked about offline was what it would take for UGA to lose to CU.

I told him then, and I still believe it to be true today (despite the debacle last week).....

"With the exception of Auburn...every time Georgia laces them up, I expect us to win IF we show up prepared and ready to play. We rarely *lose* football games anymore. We beat ourselves via coming in flat or just stone cold wetting the bed...like when we enter the Jacksonville City limits."

If we come in jacked up and focused, we will destroy Ole Miss. We just have to focus on blocking, tackling, passing and catching. The basics. If we make the plays that our talent level suggests we should make, we win.

Georgia doesn't have to do anything super human to win games with its talent, team work and conditioning.

Auburn is the ONLY team that we play that is just as tough. Just as well coached. Just as deep. Just as talented. And they are the only team that TAKES victory from us without us giving it to them or nutting up.

That's a very good place to be as a program.

I agree Auburn took it from us in 2004 on the Plains, but with regard to last year, you've got to admit that the blown coverage on 4th and 10 was us giving it to them. The other day I was thinking about which play haunts me most during the Richt era. Admittedly, there aren't a lot, and they are outweighed by the good ones (Hobnailed Boot, Michael Johnson vs. Auburn, etc.), but for me, it comes down to either the Auburn play last year or the Terrence Edwards drop in JAX in the final minutes of the game in 2002. Perhaps that one was worse, as an undefeated season was on the line in '02. That play is etched in my memory forever. I can still see the cornerback falling down, Greene lofting that pass, Edwards leaving his feet to make the catch...and then promptly dropping it.

Last year's Auburn game, we "gave" it to them in my opinion. Remember Flowers' fumbling that punt return which basically gave them 6 on the next play. Numerous other plays that we just had bad moments that "gave" it to them.

Hmmm. I think you are missing PWD's point. Mistakes will happen in any game. Just because you can see a play occur and say "If we make that play, we win" doesn't mean that we wet the bed or gave it to them. If we have been playing well, executing and doing the things that in general we are supposed to do, and then just make a mistake, that's just football; it happens. And sometimes the other team forces the mistake.

What I think he is talking about is coming out lethargic, being slow to react, looking a little confused, and just generally impersonating your own scout team. That epitomizes the first half of our play against CU. It also gives you some idea about our recent play at the WLOCP. Whereas we used to go to Jax believing we would win, now we could wondering if we ever will win there on a consistent basis. With the right game plan and the right attitude, we should beat UF.

Auburn's program and coach are no where near our program and Coach Richt.

Tommy Tuberville has been an SEC Head Coach for 12 years this season, and once (1) he has been ranked ahead of Georgia, and that year UGA was Number 6 and Auburn Number 2.

Our recruiting is significantly better than Auburn. Look at Scout.com and Auburn ranks Number 12 on the average for the last five (5) consecutive years and the same on Rivals. UGA is Number 5 in Rivals and Number 6 in Scout.com.

The difference between the two programs is the quarterback depth, running back depth, receiver depth, linebacker depth, defensive end depth, secondary depth and depth in special teams.

As for David Greene's pass, Terrence Edwards was wide open. The wounded duck pass was thrown 5 feet over his head requiring a wide open receiver to jump up to make the catch.

And, to make it seem like David Greene did everything right and Terrence Edwards everything wrong, now 5 seasons later, is utter BS. On the day, David Greene faced 11 third downs. He converted zero. Don't tell me that was Terrence Edwards' fault that David Greene was zero for 11 on 3rd down conversions.

Paulwesterdawg, when I saw your headlines, one guy's take on the UGA program, I figured you might mention that this 10th year in a row, UGA is ranked in the AP Poll and that only 1 other program has been with us every year in the AP Poll.

Or, that there are but 2 teams who have won more football games in this 10-year run.

Or, that there are but 2 others with more on NFL rosters this day.

Excuse me, this thread and its retorts is not what I expected.

And, why not just call a spade, a spade about Matthew Stafford ? He has now played four (4) games. He has in them, a grand total of 1 Touchdown pass, when DJ Shockley record in a season is 24 passing and 4 rushing for 28 total - instead Matthew Stafford has 2, 26 behind the QB last year. Matthew Stafford is not ready yet. If you cannot bring yourself to say it, I will.

Auburn won the game last year, and therefore has won 2 now of the last 4.

They lost to Tech whom we beat by twice Tech's score and lost to LSU whom UGA beat by 3 touchdowns for our 2nd SEC Championship in the last 4.

Auburn ?

Florida has lost 5 games a year forever.

Forever, defined as since Steve Spurrier quit that gig.

Florida beat UGA last year, without our QB.

Florida, like Auburn, ended up looking up to UGA in the SEC and up to UGA in the polls.

Auburn was ranked worse than UGA and so was Florida.

Y'all got your heads screwed on sideways.

When the season is over and either Florida or Auburn is considered by any poll anywhere to be the better team...

let me know, ok ?

Spot on. We're more talented, they want it more. Our coaches, while debatable, are better, but they want it more. We've got a 50/50 chance when going head to head with AU. It's all about how bad we want it.

The Cocktail Party, that's another story. We crap the bed year after year. Boy, it's gets old.

I was with you until you talked about Brandon Cox.

He'd be starting not only at UGA, but at about 80% of D1 schools right now.

We had the same conversations here during the John Cooper years. Don't get me wrong, Richt's overall record and performance is ahead of Cooper's. I won't belabor the point but OSU was set for national championship contention, particularly in 93 and 95, before losing to Michigan.

I agree w/PWD's contention. And, I don't want to be obsessed with Florida, but if you are OWNED by your rival, people start forgetting lots of other important facts

What about our offense makes you think we are just as talented as Tennessee, Florida, and, dare I say it, Ga Tech? Is it the fact that we are 87th in total offense? 84th in passing efficiency? Is it the fact that we run an amazing 133 yards per game? Our defense is as good as ever, thank God. Our O-line couldn't handle the slants of the Buffs or the Rebs. What are they going do against a real SEC team? Our receivers can't catch a cold in Alaska. Thomas "The Ant" Brown can bench 9 times his body weight, but he has yet to figure out that he can't run over 240 lb linebackers. Let's take this year for what it is...a transition to greater things next year.

The person with the long winded blog posts....

If you're the same guy that posts under the name BuLLdawg on the AJC Site, you're really not going to be comfortable posting here. You're going to be much more comfortable posting on the AJC's site.

Thanks
