AP and Coaches Polls Are Out. Dawgs at 9 in both

The AP and Coaches Polls have been released. Georgia is now 9th in both polls. We moved up 1 in the AP poll, and we stayed put in the Coaches Poll.

I haven't bitched about the polls much this year, but it doesn't make sense to me that Ok State's win versus an unranked Baylor team is more impressive than our win over a Top 25 Vanderbilt team. At least not impressive enough for them to jump us in the Coaches Poll. Whatever. We're only 16 votes back from Ok State in the Coaches. So, it'll sort itself out if we keep winning.

I'm guessing that they Harris Poll will be released when the BCS Standings are announce around 4-4:30(ish) on Fox today. (Update: Harris has us at 9th)

Teams of note on our schedule:

TeamAP
Poll
USAToday
Poll
Alabama2
2
Florida
5
7
LSU
11
11
Georgia Tech
21
21

Others Receiving Votes

Vanderbilt
28
32
Kentucky
30
33

Other Items of Note:
  • Georgia Tech cracked the Top 25 with a strong showing against Clemson.
  • Six teams jumped into the realm of the ranked in each polls. Northwestern and Boston College each made one but not the other poll.
  • Ball State is now up to 20th in one poll and 22nd in the other poll. Are you seriously telling me that the pollsters think Ball State would beat teams like Michigan State, Virginia Tech and UNC? Get real.
  • The ACC's highest rated team is Georgia Tech at 21st. Utah, Boise State, TCU, BYU and Ball State are all rated higher than the ACC's "best" team in the AP Top 25. "You might be a crappy conference if..."
What jumped out at you so far?

Our schedule is not looking like it once did. Az State, Aub and UT are all down. Yeah, Tech is better, but in rpi language, look at their pathetic ACC schedule. While our schedule is tough, we better hope that should we run the table, we need to beat a Florida team that ends up 10-2 and an undefeated Bama. Nobody else save possibly South Carolina and LSU will smell 9 wins.

I agree with Ted. It's one of the reasons why I can't say with any confidence that if we keep winning it will sort itself out. When we first starting dropping in the polls, I was pretty philosophical about it. I, like almost everyone else, thought that even if we lost a game, our schedule would get us into the national championship game. Not so sure anymore. In my opinion, even if we beat Florida, the only way we get to the national championship game is if Alabama makes it to the SEC Championship and we beat them there to redeem ourselves for 31-0. We play anyone else in the SEC Championship and I think we get left out for USC or someone else.

Please stop with the bashing of the ACC. Yes, it is not a very good conference at all this year. But, it still has 3 teams ranked in the Top 25 (with 4 others receiving votes, which means that nearly 2/3 of the conference is ranked among the Top 40 teams) in the AP and 2 Top 25 teams and 4 others receiving votes in the Coaches.

If anything though, these polls really show what idiots the writers and coaches can be. Anyone that has OK. St. ahead of UGA are idiots and really what makes anyone think Bama is better than PSU after they have beat 5-2 UK and 3-4 Ole Miss at home by a COMBINED SEVEN points in their last 2 games, while PSU has steamrolled everyone they have played?

You know the pollsters want it both ways;
The half against Bama was bad however Bama has proved that they have a tough time putting teams away, with that said, they are #2, which is the ONLY loss we have...to #2 ranked Bama' squad. We should be the highest ranked one loss squad. I think the polls will look drastically different at the end of the year. I think we may just be sitting in the top 3. Kevin Butler on the 5th Qtr show talked a little about the polls. They are flawed at best.

Out of Penn State, Alabama, and Texas, if two of those teams end up losing during the regular season then a one-loss team will make it to the title game. And a one-loss SEC champion would have as strong a case as anyone. USC's schedule is too weak, and Ohio State--if Penn State doesn't take care of business next week--would even be behind USC in the pecking order if they win the conference at 11-1. If UGA finishes 12-1 with one loss, they will have a strong statement even though the schedule is not as tough as it previously looked.

I still don't really understand the media's love for USC.

They lose to Oregon State and still remain in the top 10.

They kill Washington State, but then again, its Washington State.

Thought it odd that UGA beat USCe by 7 & fell from 2 to 3, while LSU beat them by 7 & jumped from 14 to 11.....

Ball State is this year's Hawaii. They will make it to a decent bowl game, then get the cream cheese kicked out of them.

Ball State will lose to Central Michigan in a few weeks making our win against them look better.

Brian Dale?

How could you ask anyone to stop bashing the ACC when it is so fun (and so legitimate). The only win of consequence that league has over anyone is Maryland (a wildly inconsistent team) beating Cal at 9AM PT at home. Beyond that, you have Wake (a team that was the ACC favorite until Saturday) barely beating Ole Miss at home and FSU beating Colorado in Jacksonville?

When you start listing all of the bad losses (and this is before all of the SEC-ACC matchups happen at the end of the year), it makes it really easy to bury them. The only thing that makes them look any better is the fact that the Big East has totally collapsed this season.

Just win.

What's scary abut the USC ranking is that the BCS even has them higher than Georgia. THat's cause for serious concern.

The ACC will never get any respect until Florida State and Miami are again perennial contenders. There are no other programs that have any tradition at all except CLem from 1981 to 95 of so and Ga Tech from the 50's. Yes I know Tech won a share of a title in the Tangerine Bowl.

I will grant you that there are a number of teams in the ACC on par with teams like Kentucky, Vandy and Ole Miss...little, pesky teams that make you play 4 quarters.

The ACC is absolutly atrocious this year. I am nervous about our line going up against that LSU front 4.

Why wouldn't an undefeated Oklahoma State be ranked in front of us? After all they did beat Mizzou

You can tell when you Dogs start worrying about Tech being legit again ... you start barking about how weak the ACC is.

Face it, you know that Tech finally found a very good coach ... one I predit will go 500 against Richt for as long as he is at Tech.

Then your next rant will be that Johnson won't stay at Tech. Unfortunately, he will be there for a long time.
