Hoops: Georgia defeats Santa

The Georgia Bulldogs basketball team raised their record to 4-1 with a win over Santa Clara in the Preseason NIT consolation bracket. The 54-48 win was made possible by strong defense and ok performances by the Georgia front court as Woodbury, Albert Jackson and Howard "Trey" Thompkins III all scored in double digits. The most important news of the game came from the debut of Thompkins. The box score shows 18 minutes, 10 points, 2 rebounds, 5 blocked shots, 1 steal, 1 turnover and no fouls. Thompkins played physical enough to shoot 5 of 6 free throws, but didn't play recklessly enough to draw fouls. Interesting.

I'll see him play up close tomorrow night, and I'm intrigued. He'll see his minutes slowly rise from here as Felton works to get Thompkins in shape without re-injuring his ankles.

As a team, the problem area is (as always) offense. Chip Towers talks about the offensive woes including another sub-40% shooting night from the floor. Still, they won.

Tomorrow, they get a warm-up game against Mississippi Valley State before facing Western Kentucky (road), Illinois (Neutral Site in Chicago) and Virginia Tech (home) in a row. The next two weeks will give us more visibility into what sort of team this is than the past two weeks did.

Is there any way we can get you to do a schedule analysis at some point in the near future? I know basketball isn't the main focus of this blog, but after last year, I've gotten a bit of the bug, and want to start paying (more) attention to our Bball team. Hopefully, Felton can take some sort of step forwards, finally, in year 6 (right?). Thanks for the update on the game, btw. Wasn't in town tonight so I missed it. Why'd they put this at home over Thanksgiving break, anyways?

I was at the game last night and glad to get my first look at Thompkins. He has a nice shot and seems to move really well. I don't think he's going carry the team on his back, but his offense will really help. We might've been in trouble against Santa Clara without him.

Also, Albert Jackson had a really successful return. He had 6 of Georgia's first 9 points and played strong all night.

Santa Clara has a pretty good team, so I think our boys should be proud that they handled them so well (holding them to such a low score).

On a side note, I'm excited to see what Santa Clara can do tonight against Arizona. The 'Cats have the better team, but I wouldn't be surprised to see S.C. give them a game.

Are you going to make it for Arizona paul? I'm really wanting to see them.

Not sure if I'll go to our game tonight, after all, Charlie Brown's Thansgiving is on.

I do agree with you though, we'll know more in two weeks. Miss Valley St should be an easy W, and while Santa Clara looked good, they "left [their] best player home for an attitude adjustment" and were all freshman and sophomores outside of their big C and Kendrick Johnson's brother.

That must be the Tim Allen Santa, as he's drinking whiskey and eating fried chicken. So much for the milk and cookies...
