Hoops: UGA Flatlines vs Illinois

It's one thing to lose a game. As long as you play hard and play smart, there is honor in defeat. But there's very little dignity in rolling over and playing dead on national TV. With 7:23 left in the game, the Georgia Bulldogs put the offense in park on Saturday, and the Fighting Illini went on a 22-0 run to close out the game. A game that was within 7 points at the half turned into a humiliating 76-42 beat down (Image: ESPN.com)

Thus continues Dennis Felton's staggering track record of complete ineptitude in games played outside of the State of Georgia. In six years, Felton has won roughly 12 games played beyond the border of the Peach State. I always say "roughly" in an attempt to give him the benefit of the doubt that I might have missed a win somewhere. Only 7 of those road wins outside of our own state came against Major Conference schools:
    2009 - none (but it's early)
    2008 - Auburn
2007 - Wake, Arkansas and Vandy
    2006 - SC and Vandy
    2005 - none
    2004 - Kentucky
What went wrong? If you score 42 points and turn the ball over 27 times, you lose. Against the Illini, the Bulldogs rebounded well. So there's that.

Tuesday against Virginia Tech is a reasonable chance at victory. The Hokies don't have a solid win yet, but they have played Wisconsin and Xavier tough. We'll see.

This team couldn't beat VT's women's team.

Teams with good guard play will eat this team up. UGA has very streaky perimeter shooting and teams can stay in the zone forever. Deny the ball inside. Transition game has not really materialized. I don't feel good about it. Felton's seat is getting hotter every day.

This team plays defense like CWM's football team. Terrible. We could not beat our girls team without a doubt.

Uh, the ladies' team also scored only 42 in their most recent loss... to Ga Tech

I said this last year after the SEC tourny - Felton got lucky as hell and miraculously caught lightening in a bottle. Winning that tournament was the worst thing that could happen to the long-term prospects of GA basketball in that his inevitable dismissal will only be prolonged.

So has the administration written off the basketball team? I mean, Felton has been with us for how long? He may be a nice guy, but he's not getting it done for us.

Sounds like another team we all know that rolls over and plays dead on occasion. Must be something in the water in Athens we don't know about.

Go Tech GIRLS, continue the tradition.

Absolutely pitiful. Felton winning the SEC last year was akin to Goff beating Gtu to end every season. Lipstick on a pig.

Apathy reigns regarding the b-ball program. Felton has got to go, and I do not think anyone would be too upset to see the rare midseason firing.

Hey papadawg...when you said the the lady dawgs only scored 42 against tech, I thought you were making a football joke, but I just realized you were serious!

Is it just me, or is the #42 now the Dawgs version of unlucky 13? Honestly, I don't think I could handle seeing it again this year!

LOL

Puppy basketball = Dead

why don't you tear down that sorry excuse for a basketball "stadium" and stick to just football. That's the only sport y'all understand anyways...

PS - You are going to get ROLLED by the purple turkeys.

You can't win in basketball without a point guard. Doesn't Felton know this?

It's great that he has cleaned up the program and restored some integrity. But it would be nice to be remotely competitive, too, which we never are and never really have been under him other than a single season. It's time for him to go. This year is going to be painful.

AArrgghh...the football team is soft and gets their asses kicked by Florida; the basketball team just plain sucks. I am sick of FAILURE.

He's only had 6 years, give Felton more time.
