Julio Jones named SEC Freshman of the Year

AJ Green vs. Vandy (Image: Hipple)

Julio Jones picked up the hardware instead of Georgia's AJ Green. This one was awarded by the SEC Media. You know what's even dumber? Julio Jones was named 2nd Team All-SEC behind Green by the same writers. Compare their stats:

RECEIVE YDS/GAME Cl G Rec. Yards TD Long Rec/G Avg/C Avg/G
1 A.J. Green-UGA FR 12 55 951 8 54 4.6 17.3 79.2
2 M. Massaquoi-UGA SR 12 57 910 8 78 4.8 16 75.8
3 Brandon LaFell-LSU JR 12 61 903 8 43 5.1 14.8 75.2
4 Julio Jones-UA FR 13 51 847 4 64 3.8 16.6 65.2

AJ Green had over 100 more receiving yards and twice as many touchdowns in fewer total games. Yet, Julio is Freshman of the Year? How many votes did Gary Danielson have in this thing?

Maybe this will piss him off to take his game to an even higher level. Also, congrats to the following Bulldogs who made All-SEC honors:
    OL - Clint Boling - 1st Team
    WR - AJ Green - 1st Team
    RB - Knowshon Moreno - 1st Team

    WR - Mohamed Massaquoi - 2nd Team
    QB - Matthew Stafford - 2nd Team
    LB - Rennie Curran - 2nd Team
    S - Reshad Jones - 2nd Team
    P - Brian Mimbs - 2nd Team

Reshad Jones? Really SEC Media? Really?

And similar to Green, Eric Berry wins defensive player of the year (which he is well deserving of) yet Rashad Johnson of Alabama is the "unanimous selection" at first team safety

Tony B. should jump all over this.

Truth is, however, a big performance on the biggest stage put Julio over the top.

At least none of the Gator backs jumped over Knowshon.

And they didn't give Def POY to that over-rated slob Cody. 20 tackles during the regular season, according to CBS's graphics, with 4.5 for loss?

We coulda been a contenda, dammit.

How can Rennie Curran lead the conference in total tackles and fail to make 1st team All-SEC? The logic that must have gone into this blows my mind.

ty webb said...

Um, because the whole thing is not based on stats? But I guess I should expect that from most UGA fans, 1/2 of whom have been UGA fans since about 2002.

Anonymous said...

Then why come to a Georgia football blog, shit-for-brains?

And pray tell, what is all-star status based on? Alliteration?

Anonymous said...

Julio over AJ is silly, but what REALLY stands out is that Reshad made All-SEC.

WHAT A DISGRACE.

Kevin said...

reshad jones? wtf.

Unknown said...

Guys - ease up. He plays for our team.

You're being a little more than dickish. The bitching is out of hand.

dstarnes said...

Ty you're right. Thank you very little.

Eric said...

It's obvious that A.J. is so good, and so much better than "Ole! Ole!" Jones, that they forgot he was only a freshman.

Anonymous said...

All due respect Paul, but I took it that "bitching" is the theme of this particular post.

Falling from #1 to #16 or whatever stinks, but AJ's spectacular year deserves more credit from the SEC "writers," obviously.

And BTW, I was probably a loyal UGA fan before Mr. Webb was born.

His own comment is the most dickish I've read so far.

Anonymous said...

What!!! This is a joke. A.J deserved this. With the team underachieving as it did, A.J was the only player to consistently put up numbers, make huge plays, and produce when the team needed him. Our record wouldn't be 9-3 if it wasn't for him. Not right, just not right!

Anonymous said...

I agree with Paul, we need to ease up on Reshad. He really is a good player. He had bad games on some big stages and has been crucified for it, but he really did have a good year altogether. As for ty webb, you must be a Gator fan. You know, the same people who argue that Tebow deserved the Heisman last year because his stats showed he was the best player, but he also deserves it this year even though his stats don't show that. Its funny how all these people clung to their stats last year and now they don't matter. I don't think those other LBs are undeserving, but Rennie has just as much of an argument as anyone else.

Anonymous said...

No one has mentioned that the SEC Champs had fewer players named to the 1st & 2nd teams than GA did.

I suppose you can count Tebow as 4 players, but the facts are the facts.

For a team as absolutely loaded as we are, we absolutely underperformed on Defense and Special Teams.

I hate it, but Urban Meyer had his team gel this year. They had great leadership and played solid FUNDAMENTAL football.

Good for them.

Richt - are you watching???

Anonymous said...

Apologies, Paul.

I thought you were defending this Webb character, not Reshad.

(feeling REALLY stupid, but blaming it on the wine).

Anonymous said...

did anybody hear that Jan Kemp passed away today?

Anonymous said...

The same thing happened in the Big 12. Colt McCoy was selected offensive player of the year, but Sam Bradford was the 1st team QB.

It's not unheard of, and it's kinda cool that the two impact freshmen both get something for the effort this year.

Anonymous said...

P.S. Still have no life, boogers?

Anonymous said...

:-)

dstarnes said...

How do you nerds not know who Ty Webb is?

How can you bad mouth Tim Tebow?

If it was all stats, then there wouldn't be a vote. JJ is very deserving. Why do you care? Does it lessen your sense of self worth?

julio probably got it because he gives it all until the wistle is blown. don't get me wrong, i think aj is a great wode receiver but he has a tendency to step out of bounds or go down after initail contact. julio on the other hand will lower is shoulder and run over defensive backs while carrying two more on his back. no other receiver in the league gets more yards after contact than julio. aslo julio has his biggest games on the biggest stages, georgia, tennessee, lsu, and florida. also aj had two 100-yard games, arizona state and vandy, while julio had three, tennessee, lsu, and flordia, which were bigger games than arizona state and vandy.

Mr. Bulldawg said...

Call the cops...AJ was robbed.

S.A.W.B. said...

Hey boogers, you still living in the trailer park? Yeah, I thought so...go fall in a well and die.

Dan - what other criteria should we use to quantify which player is '____ of the ____' as opposed to another player? Number of Fillipino boy-foreskins removed? AJ had a statistically better year, and had a larger impact on his team's fortunes than JJ did.

It doesn't lessen my sense of self-worth, or anything else, because JJ won, but I, and apparently most of the rest of the Dawg nation, think that the writers might want to hold their huffing and freebasing sessions AFTER they vote on this stuff next year.

Ty Webb - Go play in traffic or something.

Julio was the best receiver on his team by far and drew much more intense coverage. Plus he had a relatively pedestrian QB throwing him the ball.

On the other hand, AJ Green had another top SEC receiver to deflect coverage, and a man with a great arm and pigeon brains tossing him the ball.

Julio deserved it. Shoulda been first team SEC too. Let's see what AJ can do next year when he has to get out from under MOMASS's skirt.

Andy Mills said...

Ugh as a UGA fan seeing AJ Green get passed up hurts....but I guess the kid was pretty stellar as well. Well at least he has a few years to grab a Heisman.

Anonymous said...

Why would anybody think an SEC receiver has a chance to win a Heisman?

It doesn't happen.

I love A.J. but he would have to perform some kind of Superman act to pull that off.

Anonymous said...

Anon 10:47 PM, just admit that you're either biased the other way when it comes to this discussion, or just clueless, because you clearly didn't watch much UGA football this season. My father and I talked all the time about how surprised we were that a guy with such a wiry frame like AJ's ALWAYS stuck a stiff arm out and fought for extra yards, whether he was near the sideline or not. You, sir, don't know what you're talking about.

Also, this kinda BS happens all the time, just typical political college football nonsense. Remember Shockley winning the league his one year as a starter, putting up better numbers across the board, winning SECCG MVP... but they gave Offensive Player of the Year to Cutler instead. Sucks for AJ, but it sucks even more if Willie Martinez is still roaming our sidelines next fall.

How many of these same media vote in AP or BCS polls?

It makes no sense to me why one Freshman would be lower on the All-SEC depth chart and still win Freshman of the Year over another but I can see the argument for Jones being a better Freshman WR. He was on a team that didn't have to pass nearly as much, had noone else to pass to, and had a par QB. He should be raking in fewer stats. The only thing I can see that would boost Jones' stats over Green is that Jones had an easier schedule but the difference in schedule strength isn't nearly as wide as we thought it would be at the beginning of the year. I still would've voted Green though.

Anonymous said...

Not sure that this "split decision" is really so much to get upset about. Both Jones and Green are stand-outs and I see no problem with splitting the honors so that neither of them is left out.

Anonymous said...

Jones???????????????? You have got to be kidding!

Hunker Down said...

Re. Reshad Jones. Huge upside remaining. He is only a Sophomore and finished with 72 tackles. So maybe he missed another 15 or 20. Let's suppose he becomes a more sure tackler for next year and is even more comfortable in the defense. Could he approach 90 tackles? What is done is done. Complaining about missed tackles won't change anything now. Learning to tackle better will. Support from the fans will also be a good thing. By comparison, the other Rashad (Bama's Johnson) had 82 tackles as a senior and Eric Berry (Soph) had 72.

By the way, Reshad Jones also led the team with 4 interceptions. That's not as good as Eric Berry's 7 picks, but it doesn't suck.

Better to have AJ hacked off at being passed over for an award he at least arguably deserved than to have him take a false comfort in his abilities. I think he should have won, but I think there is also a lesson for this year's team to learn: rewards only matter if they are based on wins. Both AJ and Jones will have new QBs next year, and we should get a couple of years to see who will be the better WR. Freshmen of the year is nice, but it does not settle the question.

Prove it on the field, you hairy dawgs.

Dubbayoo said...

Maybe they just took the chickensh*t way out and conspired to give one award to each A.J. & J.J.

united dawg,
you're right i didn't watch too much, in fact i only watched two games because i was too busy watching alabama go 12-0 and then piss it all away in the last 9:21 of the SECCG. the only 2 games i saw were the bama game and auburn game. aj didn't do a lto against us and had that crucial fumble in the first half. i nthe auburn game there were a couple of times when aj stepped out after catching a pass down the sideline. also julio was more important to his team becuase after him the person with the highest receiveing yards was our tight end nick walker with 299 yards.

Anonymous @ 11:22pm

I guess that's one way to look at it.
Another way would be that although Georgia had two good receivers they were both able to catch more passes and score twice as many TDs as Julio. If Bama had another good receiver perhaps Julio would have been thrown to less.

I agree that we will never be national champs until we can Willie Martinez. He has no passion and the players just dont get up for him like they did with Brian VanGorder. Look at the falcons D. 10 times better with smith and vangorder!

C. Todd Davis said...

Look, Julio's longest catch was 64 years, which is a first down longer than AJ's. Not to mention the fact that Alabama comes before Georgia alphabetically. For me, that pretty much clears up why Julio was FOY.

Anonymous said...

HAHA!!! GO JULIO!!! ALABAMA IS A RUNNING TEAM & JULIO STILL BEAT GREEN!! HAHAHAA!! THE AWARD ISN'T BASED ON STATS ANYWAY! IT'S BASED ON SKILL!! CONGRATS TO RASHAD JOHNSON ALSO!! AS TO MORENO... WAAAYYYY OVERRATED!! WHEN HE PLAYED AGAINST A GOOD DEFENSE (ALABAM) HOW MANY YARDS DID HE HAVE?? UMM 34... DONT SOUND LIKE TOO GREAT OF A RB! OH & HOW DOES THAT 41-30 LOSS TO THE TIDE TASTE IN THAT PUPPY DOG MOUTH OF YALlS?!?! ROLL TIDE!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

The taste is about as bad as having a shot at all the marbles and getting beat in the SEC championship game and having to play utah...which bama better not overlook.

Shut up and take the Caps Lock off you goof.

AJ Green, as a freshmen, made everyone around him better. Julio Jones could only make himself excel. That is the only stat I need. I am laughing at the guy trying to go after Green's toughness, however. He obviously didn't see the 75%+ catches where Green went high across the middle. As for stepping out of bounds, I guess that was before he caught game-winning TD against Auburn. With as many tools as Georgia had, it was Green as often or not that got the ball with the game on the line. That is all I need to know.

Ben said...

If I remember didn't julio burn UGA ass all night? I guess we all need something 2 bitch about.

Anon at 8:25 -
Knowshon played maybe 4 or 5 series against Bama. He got hurt early and only had 9 attempts. I hate people that yell "No-sho" for no reason. You can't fault a kid for not accumulating stats when he fractured his elbow and had to leave a game.

The selections that were posted on the blog are wrong. Go look at the secsports.com and the first and second teams they have listed. Massaquoi is 1st team all-sec and Green and Julio Jones are both 2nd-team. Rennie is 1st team. Boling and Reshad Jones are not on either of the all-sec teams. Rashad JOHNSON from Alabama is 1st team. I don't know where the names on the blog came from, but according to the official secsports website they are incorrect.

I would just like to further add, you Bammer fans couldn't be more stereotypical here. This whole argument is a joke. If you weren't trying to blame AJ's awesomeness on JPW vs Stafford all year, or Moreno, now you're putting it on Massaquoi too. Protip: Even with all the other offensive weapons, AJ Green still lead the league in receiving and TD's as a true freshman. You call it "pressure off," but it really just means he did more with his touches, in less games I might add. You don't see us blaming everything on injuries or the line play do ya... no, because we know AJ is better, and the stats back that up. But hey, do enjoy your No-Win-Situation Sugar Bowl anon 1:21... been there, done that. You win, you were expected to. You lose, everybody laughs. The fact all you 'necks are now coming out of the woodwork runnin your mouths about stuff you clearly have no clue about just proves how down you've been for so long I guess, and that you know we're right here... 'doth protest too much' and all that jazz. If we didn't have the numbers, and if you have nothing to worry about, then why are you still here sweating it?? Cliche Bama fans are cliche.... hell, I'm a little surprised we haven't had more BEAR talk in these comments, lol.

And anon 11:50 AM, lrn2link... the one up now is the coaches list. We're referring to the AP list which came out first. What you think we're just making sh*t up?? No, that's Tidefans' department when it comes to imagining ways Julio was better than AJ this season in any facet.

Anonymous said...

united dawg,
here's an email sent to chris low at ESPN addressing the question about julio and aj. apparently us Tide fans aren't he only ones who "imagine" ways that julio is better.

Preston in Athens, Ga., writes: Explain to me how Julio Jones deserved Freshman of the Year honors over A.J. Green when Green outgained Jones by 104 receiving yards and scored twice as many touchdowns (8 to 4). And I forgot to mention that Green led the entire SEC in receiving yards, but I guess that doesn't cut it. My God a Freshman!

Chris Low: First of all, love the Larry Munson impersonation. Secondly, I'm one of those who voted for Jones over Green. Both had fabulous freshman seasons. Both have unbelievable futures. What it came down to for me was that Jones was simply a better player, the toughest one-on-one cover in the league and the guy nobody could tackle after the catch. I realize Green had better numbers, and I'm not taking anything away from his season. But the Bulldogs threw it nearly 100 more times than the Crimson Tide this year. Had Jones been in Georgia's offense, his numbers would have been comparable, if not better, than Green's. The real story here is that the SEC has two of the better freshman receivers in the country and two of the better receivers I've seen come into this league in the same year in a long time.

oh and cuatro, don't give me any of that crap about knowshow being hurt. i saw him downtown, in bourbon street, after the game celebrating the tide's win and i can get the picture to prove it.

i like how the guys on college football live keep coming up with excuses for Green just in case he dont do too hot this year! Like saying he has to catch from a new qb & that he had shoulder surgery... Hello, Julio will have a new qb & had shoulder surgery as well! But he dont get any excuses! Guess they know he'll be even better next year regardless! maybe this year the risin tide will have another good reciever so defences wont be able to doubled & sometimes triple team Julio. Itd be nice if he wasnt having to break 5-8 tackles to pick yards! Just for laughs, how do yall think Georgia will do against Bama this year? Before you talk too much trash, remember time will give us the answer! Haha!

Dear Dumbass Bama Fan,

We don't play you next year.
