A Promise Kept - Georgia Wins the National Championship

Hey.

Yes, I still have access to this account. Back in Fall of 2018, I decided Waitn' Since Last Saturday provided the much needed outlet blogging previously provided, Twitter is actually much easier for me, and I suck at writing.

Mostly, though, it was because I didn't have anything new to add. After ten years of blogging and 3+ of podcasting, it felt well worn.

Because it was.

When Kirby was hired, I promised myself I'd write a post when Georgia won the National Championship, one in which I'd formally retire from this blog. It is said that you can't really retire when you aren't working, but I've always admired folks like Spencer Hall or Kyle King that could openly and publicly say they were done. Honestly, I expected to see the post that had been languishing in drafts since January 2019 after the Texas Sugar Bowl loss, the one in which I said I was done. It never became a post because I figured UGA would get a bigger stage and one that I'd feel good about doing a last post on. I never considered that for the Sugar Bowl last year, not because of the opponent or anything like that, but because I'd totally forgot I still had access to a blog.

But then they actually went and won it.

So, there you are. Georgia won the National Championship. I was there. It happened.

It was a blast doing this. I appreciate Westerdawg (Quint and Dawgnoxious, too) for letting me play in the sandbox they built. Who knows, I may end up unretiring one of these days and get back to turning out multiple posts a day.

But a promise is a promise, and God kept promises last Monday night in Indy, so I'm out.

Go Dawgs and see you around.

Go [FILL IN THE BLANK]!

For the first time since the 2005 championship game, I have reasons for wanting either team to win/I have reasons for wanting either team to lose.

I'll not go into my conference integrity rant...probably (Twitter rants are still likely) or my Clemson hate rant. There are reasons for wanting Alabama to win: Kirby's profile with recruits, ect. There are reasons for wanting Clemson to win: beating Alabama.

Thank God someone finally called Bradley out

Oh, wait. It was Steve Spurrier. And he thinks Bradley is a UGA homer?
I do not think that means what he thinks it means.

Now, if the AJC really wanted to troll him, they'd get Bill Stanfill to write columns.

Watching UGA hold Clemson to Vanderbilt and Kent State levels of total offense, tonight will be fun.

Petrino and Grantham: Is the honeymoon over?

I'd been hearing some rumors from friends in Louisville, but now this...
Not quite sure how it will play out, but it isn't hard to see where the Cardinal staff room isn't big enough for those two egos.

Todd Grantham has defense figured out

I agree with Blutarsky, the Louisville Defensive Stats Watch will be a fun one. Give him a white towel and five to seven bewildered defensive players looking over at him and magic happens. Especially with all the talk of intensity and passion:
Hey, that's my pie
Defense is about 1-on-1 matchups, guys that can play, how to fit those matchups, and trying to take the players that you have that can affect the game and put them in those positions. We’re going to do that with the players that we have. The big thing with me is we’ve got to play with the intensity we need to play, we need to play with the passion you have to have to be a good defense.
Don't be shocked if ESPN's percentage of houshold numbers in Atlanta for their opener against Miami on Monday, Sept. 1st are higher than in Louisville.

My favorite post Georgia Grantham pic

This is the vacuous look we grew accustomed to.

What you don't see is some dude holding a white towel to his right.

Mathews not doing things right

Consequently, he's been fired.
“We are trying to make room for guys who want to do things right,” said Bulldog head coach Mark Richt.
I'll not speculate on why, but if Coach Richt was this direct and terse, then that's good enough for me.

Granthamball

951 yards, 11 touchdowns.

That is really not all you need to know about Louisville's offensive performance in their Spring game last night. As their presumptive starting quarterback put it:
"When guys are wide open, you can't miss them," Gardner said. "I just put the ball where I can and they make the plays."
No information was posted as to how many of those were wheel routes.

There were some decidedly pro-offensive ground rules, most importantly no pressuring the quarterback, but still:
"Sometimes they may know what to do, but they're second-guessing themselves," Rankins said. "With the spring, everything's thrown at us so fast. … With the summer and time to dissect the playbook, coming out for camp and the first game, we'll be fine."
That sound all too familiar, right? Petrino's going to need all the points he can get.

But we *are* spending money on basketball

I get what Schlabach is saying to UGA fans. But I'd say that the UGA fans complaining are the ones spending money on basketball. While I'm glad we didn't finish where I thought we would, I've also been very clear on looking at the NIT as some sort of win.

As for institutional $$, how's that $92M Auburn spent for a new arena working out for Tony Barbee?

I see you Missouri and South Carolina

I'm not attributing all of Missouri's successes this year to 'turnover luck.' For one, I think part of that is made by how aggressively you play and focus on creating turnovers. For two, turnover luck only turns up to be important over the season in one possession games. Unless you are Houston. One look at their 43 turnovers created this season will tell you everything you need to know what Westerdawg thought Gibbs was worth a look for DC.

Missouri won by playing good enough defense, but in the end, they were only in two one possession games all season: The loss to South Carolina, where they were +2 in TOs; and the win over Texas A&M where they were +1 in turnovers.

South Carolina was on the top of the turnover luck list, too. They were in four one possession games, and were 3-1 in them. It shouldn't come as a surprise that they were -2 in that game against Tennessee.

Georgia was near the bottom, but nearly all on the strength (weakness?) of the Missouri game. We finished the year at -7 on TO margin, which put us at 101st in the nation. But we were -4 against Missouri. Just have our normal -1 and we are 20 places better.

Also, I'd be curious to know if anyone had worse turnovers than Georgia, as far as field position and such goes.

Elimination Game in Jacksonville

That is the only time this week I'll mention this* little fact. The winner in Jacksonville this week will still have the glimmer of a chance to get embarrassed by Alabama in December. With South Carolina's win over Missouri Gary Pinkel losing his cojones in the 4th quarter and allowing South Carolina to come back and win last night, literally everyone in the East has a mathematical shot at the division.

That being said, Missouri still has the inside path, but they also have a tough schedule with the game at Ole Miss and facing Texas A&M to end the season:
Sat, Nov 2 TBD ESPN ESPN2
Sat, Nov 9 TBD
Sat, Nov 23 TBD
Sat, Nov 30 TBD

That being said, Florida faces the toughest road with Georgia and South Carolina still on the schedule. And Vandy is still on the schedule, if you are being honest. Georgia and South Carolina both face Florida, but Georgia still has to go to Auburn, while South Carolina gets Mississippi State at home.

With that win over Missouri, anyone want to bet against South Carolina making it to Atlanta?

That's why I'll only mention 'elimination game' once this week. There is still too much left to happen for me to think about the possibilities necessary for us to win the East. We need to focus on hating Florida.

Colorado sent fake money to Clowney

This is a very good read on Jadeveon Clowney. I don't like that he's a South Carolina Gamecock, and I hope he has a terrible game against us. Still, he's an athletic freak on the scale of Herschel Walker. As a fan of defense, he's pretty compelling to watch.

The story is interesting enough, but there is one really funny thing about his recruitment that caught my attention:
Colorado wrote the most, even sent a box of fake money — total pretend value $1 million — with the team’s mascot, a Buffalo, in place of the usual picture of a president.
I mean, that is the most Dan Hawkins thing ever, right? How did we lose to Colorado?

The Florida Way

Hey, if it works for Florida Billy Donovan......
The sad thing is that we'd more likely see about some guy with offers an offer from the Sun Belt a Southland Conference school than take a transfer from anywhere.

And with that, Thespis has left the building
Apparently, he was riding on a moped that had been reported stolen. Dunker will get out of it, but damn it is funny for a day.

0-2 Against the SEC, but Number 1 in their minds

26/43, 320 yards, 3 TDs, 3 Ints
36 runs, 83 yards, 0 TDs

Those are Taylor Martinez's stats in his two starts against SEC teams. Both of those were in the CapitalOne Bowl.  I get the OMG!1!!!SECD!11!!! fatigue   But that fatigue is rooted in reality.

Georgia, who despite Nebraska's protestations to the contrary, isn't one of the better defenses in the SEC. We are 6th in the conference. True, we do boast one of the better scoring defenses in the conference. And we held Nebraska to below their season average in points (even more so when you consider one of their TDs was a pick 6). We held them to below their season average in rushing offense. We held them to below their season average in passing offense.

So, yeah, I guess we are like a B1.5G team.

Hey, whatever helps the folks in Lincoln get through another off season of having lost to a team with lesser talent from a league that has only won six national championships in a row. When Northwestern's win over Mississippi State in the Gator Bowl is your conference's signature bowl win, talk is all you have.
