A Promise Kept - Georgia Wins the National Championship

Hey.

Yes, I still have access to this account. Back in Fall of 2018, I decided Waitn' Since Last Saturday provided the much needed outlet blogging previously provided, Twitter is actually much easier for me, and I suck at writing.

Mostly, though, it was because I didn't have anything new to add. After ten years of blogging and 3+ of podcasting, it felt well worn.  

Because it was.

When Kirby was hired, I promised myself I'd write a post when Georgia won the National Championship, one in which I'd formally retire from this blog. It is said that you can't really retire when you aren't working, but I've always admired folks like Spencer Hall or Kyle King that could openly and publicly say they were done. Honestly, I expected to see the post that had been languishing in drafts since January 2019 after the Texas Sugar Bowl loss, the one in which I said I was done. It never became a post because I figured UGA would get a bigger stage and one that I'd feel good about doing a last post on. I never considered that for the Sugar Bowl last year, not because of the opponent or anything like that, but because I'd totally forgot I still had access to a blog.

But then they actually went and won it. 

So, there you are. Georgia won the National Championship. I was there. It happened.  

It was a blast doing this. I appreciate Westerdawg (Quint and Dawgnoxious, too) for letting me play in the sandbox they built. Who knows, I may end up unretiring one of these days and get back to turning out multiple posts a day.

But a promise is a promise, and God kept promises last Monday night in Indy, so I'm out.

Mark Fox has some theories about SEC basketball

I've been pretty clear with my feelings on Coach Fox. I've also given him credit, particularly with how his team has played this season in the SEC. His in-game coaching has been very strong, and we've improved in a couple of key areas, notably how we handle coming out of timeouts.

However, this is just so tone deaf, I don't really know what to say:

"People are gonna pick on the SEC because they don't like us, because we wear them out in football," Fox said Friday. "That's the truth."

and

"We've dominated in football. And every league, our league included, deserves some criticism from time to time for how your league has played. But I think there's probably some truth to that. They're tired of us whoopin' them in football."

I'd say Georgia Tech, Davidson, and Temple would say it is the piss poor basketball we play. Same goes for Western Carolina, which we beat by two points thanks to Charlie Mann's heroics.

Maybe it is SC-Upstate, which beat South Carolina. Or Drexel, which beat Alabama. Or Butler, which beat Vandy. Or Northwestern State, which beat Auburn. Or Rhode Island, which beat LSU. Or Missouri State and North Texas, which beat Texas A&M. Or Utah State, UNLV, and TCU, which beat Mississippi State.

As you can see from that list, clearly there is total football envy.

Or it could be that SEC basketball is bad. Comically bad.

It would be one thing if you are doing some politicking to get into the NCAA, but if this is some posturing for pride or the NIT, we've gone into the theater of the absurd. He mentions North Carolina, which has lost to UAB, which was a bad loss. The Tar Heels also have out of conference wins over Richmond, Louisville, Michigan State, and Kentucky. Those are very good wins.

Coach Fox is right about something:

They call us a football league, but what have we won, four of the last eight basketball championships, something like that? This is a great athletic conference. This is a phenomenal athletic conference. The best athletic conference, I think. So people obviously take some shots at you when you're at the top.

Putting aside the wrong guess about the number of tittles (three, Florida's two and Kentucky's one), we are a football league. To the determent of other sports. Football is the cash cow of the conference, and the vast majority of the athletic departments and the conference view all those other sports as stuff to do between January and August.

And that is a shame.

I thought some of the chop block calls against Georgia on Saturday were pretty close calls. One, however, stood out to me as a bad call: Justin Scott-Wesley's on a converted 3rd down. Now, Paul Johnson is an expert in these matters, but he's not happy with officials about it either.

I hate being on the same side of an argument with him.

ESPN to Produce SEC Storied Episode on the Tornado Tourney

Georgia won the 2008 SEC basketball tournament by winning three games in 30 hours. They did so after having the worse conference record during the season.

As a kicker, there was a tornado that hit the Georgia Dome, forcing the tournament to Georgia Tech's Alexander Memorial Coliseum. I'd say that deserves a 'Storied' episode.

Hell, the tournament run was crazy without the tornado. Dave Bliss? Dave Bliss!?! Yeah, definitely crazy.

Alabama Fan Charged in BCS Case

I'm not going into the detail of what when down in the Bourbon Street Krystals, but Brian Downing has been charged with sexual battery in the incident.  Good.

His lawyers are a bit incredulous:

"The 18-year-old victim was never physically harmed and, in fact, was so intoxicated that he would have had no recollection of the incident, but for a video posted online," the lawyers wrote. "Any ‘harm' is entirely post hoc and amplified by media."

Fine. It was the media's fault.  But the media didn't put their 32YEAROLD BALLSACKONACOMPLETESTRANGERSFACEINPUBLICWHILEHEWASPASSEDOUT. Yeah, I have some strong views on that.  My guess is Mr. Downing won't have any problems with keeping the boys inside his pants during his time in Angola.

Tell you what, let the LSU fan put a sack of his choosing on Mr. Downing's face, and his lawyers' faces, in public and on ESPN. They could get Jim Gray and make a whole hour out of it.  Then just for funsies, still charge him with sexual battery because YOUDONTPUTYOURSACKONACOMPLETESTRANGERSFACEASSHOLES.

I've debated writing this post for four days.  On Monday, I wrote the only thing I could without getting preachy and devolving into parentyell. Now, I believe the title sums up how I feel pretty accurately.

For those out there that say his contributions, his wins, his spotless now forever tarnished program should grant him more dignity than a phone call or hand delivered letter firing, I say bullshit.  At the minimum, he facilitated and allowed a pedophile's continued access to Penn State's athletic department. That access was Jerry Sandusky's candy.  At worst (and this is speculation based on the known facts), he knew that Sandusky was doing this, took his promise to not do it anymore, and blissfully ignored the rest.

Either way, anything short of doing the morally right thing when he found out what happened is enough to justify his firing.  The liability exposure alone is. That this involves kids being raped at Penn State facilities is enough to let him find out from the press conference, in my opinion.

If you think whatever good Paterno has done for Penn State and the local area trumps what he didn't do for the past decade, well, we'll just have to disagree.  If you think 409 wins somehow over shadows what happened over that decade, we'll definitely have to disagree. I am very sad for how it all ended for Coach Paterno, but that sadness is about his failure to do the right thing, not that it ended on someone else's terms with a phone call or letter.

And for those that think Paterno couldn't have changed the course of events, I call double bullshit.  If he is so revered that students took to the streets, that folks are actually trying to defend his actions, that the local media literally took an accusatory tone with the Board of Trustees in the press conference during the announcement, then Joe Paterno had the power to stop Jerry Sandusky from buggering children, especially on Penn State's campus.  That cannot be in dispute.

The bottom line is this:  Joe Paterno let his relationship, his friendship, with Sandusky trump the welfare of the vulnerable.  That is why he was fired. That is what his legacy will forever be, at least to those of us that are objective about these things.

PWD Update: How do you witness this happening and not bust into the shower and rescue the victim. I'm blown away by that. Repeatedly people saw the alleged happen and didn't stop the event itself or whip Sandusky's ass.

Game of the Week

You know, South Carolina vs. Arkansas?  While the game of the Centrury of the Week is being played in Tuscaloosa, likely for the right to beat the bejebus out of the SEC East winner play in Atlanta for the SEC Championship, South Carolina and Arky are playing, with very much on the line for Georgia.  For my money, I'll be watching the game on ESPN.

As for that other game, some Alabama fans have concocted a nearly perfect dish of the game.  Warning, it starts with a bacon weave.

Corndog casserole.  Where healthy hearts go to die.
