Your Weekly Reminder

That Seth and Cy are just about the only thing the AJC have going for it. It comes as no surprise that Bradley both praises Tech and takes a swipe at Kirby.

Provocative is as provocative does and all that.

Interesting

Just because I'm don't run my mouth don't mean I have nothing to say....

Three thoughts about this interview of Tech AD Todd Stansbury.

  1. He sounds far more Canadian than I gave him credit for.
  2. His take on beating Georgia is the most sound take I've ever heard from someone associated with Tech.
  3. Paul Johnson either has him completely snowed or Stansbury is very, very good at playing his cards close to the vest.
Forgive me for suggesting you listen to Schultz, but the interview, though boring, is pretty good.

Johnson Signs Extension to Stay at Georgia Tech

Protect the Hedges

If you want to protect the Hedges, beat Tech. I don't like it, but it is just that simple. Beat Tech. I understand taking a small memento of beating Georgia in Sanford. We can't rely on other team's players being reasonable about what a 'small memento' is. Especially Tech players.

You want to protect the Hedges, don't lose to Tech.

What's next?

We've all seen this before: Play calling to not lose, lack of focus at key times, not running the plays that work until the defense stops them, being too cute with personnel. Clock and play management snafus.

That's probably what I was most frustrated about.

And that was 2001.

It took a while of post game processing to get there, but I was frustrated because what we saw yesterday is replay of what we saw the last time we hired a young hotshot coordinator who is The Next Big Thing.

There isn't any real revelation there, but there is hope that this The Next Big Thing learns faster.

One other thing, before you get too far down that road, Mark Richt's 2001 team had three all conference selections on the Oline.

I've said all along, it is impossible to write the story of Kirby Smart's success until we see if he's learning to be a head coach. On the job training on national television sucks. We can debate if we are a program that should be doing that, but we made the decision that we are a program that does that. Ignore the noise about what Mark Richt was or what Georgia was or blahblahblahMuschamp.

That is until we are still doing those things above in year three.

Is a bowl on the line?

I think it is a fair question. So does Bill Connelly:

If you are keeping score at home, his stats only show Georgia as a favorite in one more game this summer. More stunning to me is that they have us as an underdog at Kentucky and at home vs. Georgia Tech.

No one ever said greatness would be easy.

Tech hires Josh Pastner from Memphis to coach Men's basketball

It's a name brand hire, actually far higher up the food chain than I thought they'd get. Pastner has been on the Memphis hot seat, after not getting to the post season the past two seasons. In fact, Memphis fans are probably holding a festival right now.

As for what he'll do at Tech? The book on him has always been good recruiter, average teacher, worse coach. If he can find a way to stem the Tide of ATL AAU one and done guys to the likes of UK and Duke, he'll have a shot to lift Tech's program from the bottom of the ACC and give UGA fits.

If he can't do that, we can expect more Stingtalk goodness.

Tech's coaching search drags on

For those of you that are interested (or are interested in being able to objectively look at a fan base with inflated sense of place in the firmament), it is looking like Tech's run at Valparaiso's Bryce Drew is not going well.

By all accounts, that would be a home run hire for Tech. Drew, brother of Baylor's Scott Drew, has taken Valpo to two NCAA tourneys and two NIT berths, including this year's NIT runner up, in five season. He's also in play at Vandy, which I believe has more money and is geographically closer to Drew's natural recruiting area of Indiana/Chicago. Drew is a young coach, great teacher, and solid in game coach. He can also recruit a little.

However, it looks like Drew might actually wait for something better than an ACC bottom feeder or SEC middle of the road program.

I've thought Tech would end up with a low major HC or a recently fired HC. I mentioned Travis Ford, who was fired from Oklahoma and ended up with a very good gig at St. Louis, who plays in the A-10. Tech suffers from recent failures, a very tough conference, and the inability to convince local talent to stay home.

I still think this ends up with Ron Hunter from Georgia State moving six blocks to Tech.

Georgia Tech fires Brian Gregory

After five seasons.

Gregory is finishing his most successful season at Tech at 21-15, losing in the NIT Quarterfinals. The Jackets finished 10th in the ACC, which after putting four teams in the Elite Eight (and guaranteed to have half the Final Four and a National Finalist), is something.

Still, no NCAA bids and just two winning season in five years isn't good enough on the Flats. It'll be interesting to see how they approach their hire. There are some good guys that'll be interested, despite Tech's recent lack of success. It offers some of the same advantages the UGA job does, but is closer to the Atlanta AAU scene. It plays in the most competitive hoops conference, which could be interesting to a young up and coming coach.

Look for them to go after someone like Chris Beard from Arkansas-Little Rock or even Matt McCall at Chattanooga. Don't be surprised if they end up with Ron Hunter or Travis Ford.

Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown.

Or something:
"I didn’t say a word," Ganus said. "I just signaled incomplete and I saw a flag at my foot. I told someone else I’m not going to bash the refs. Coaches weren’t mad, so that’s a sign I probably didn’t do anything wrong."
I get it, but what Jake did is being done on nearly every play. It was a terrible call, at a terrible place in the game. That is the kind of call by ACC refs that gets Dawgnoxious very fired up.

Tech having a change of heart on transfer policies

Sure, until the next time a basketball player wants to consider transferring to UGA. Call me a skeptic, but I have to think there will be a caveat of some sort next time one of Brian Gregory's players decides he is interested in UGA or UGA wants to talk with a transferring Tech player.

To give credit where it is due, if Greg McGarity has really gotten Tech's AD to come around on this, he deserves the credit for that. If it were up to me, there wouldn't be any way a school could restrict a player's options if he or she wishes to leave.

JJ Green to Tech?

I doesn't surprise me UGA has granted JJ Green his unconditional release. I hope he goes on and does great things where ever he ends up....except he is reportedly transferring to Tech.

He ran the option as an A-back in HS, so Tech is actually a good fit for him. But remember Tech denied UGA's request to talk to Robert Carter, a basketball transfer. I hope JJ chooses wisely, because I'd have a hard time advising a kid to go to a program that views their athletes as property to toy with Georgia the way Tech obviously does.

Some coaching news

Georgia Tech
Hey, we did it y'all! Tech is extending Johnson. Am I to read into this that he was a loss to UGA away from being the new offensive coordinator at UAB?

South Carolina
Spurrier decides when he leaves and now ain't the time. Besides, he beat UGA and got Muschamp fired, so it has been a good year, right? Especially if he gets Muschamp or Pelini in to coach the defense.

3 Questions Answered: Georgia Tech

  1. Is our defense up to the task? Well, no? I mean, we did a good job of bending and not breaking. They had nearly 400 yards rushing, but they didn't go out and score a bundle of points. The real answer lies in what little adjustments we made to counteract what they were doing with the dive. Very little adjustments were made until the very end. And they still ran the football 21 yards with 18 seconds to play to get into position to tie the game. Oh, and Thomas didn't get hit enough.
  2. Will 24 points win the game? No. But it should have been. We scored a defensive TD to get there, too.
  3. Who will be the Tech killer? It should have been Mason. Instead, his time as UGA will be remembered for one interception in an overtime that never should have happened.
Other random observations:
  • It is hard to say if the Missouri outcome had anything to do with the game. We came out quickly and played really well early.
  • The two fumbles inside the 5 were obviously huge, but we counteracted that with one that was returned for a TD.
  • I'm shocked we kicked a FG from the two after running a fake FG on 4th and 12...if we are willing to turn it over at the 31 against a chance to score a TD, why not go for it from the two?
  • It was good to see Rumph get a couple of targets.
  • It is early to say this, but it sure seems Pruitt has some learning to do about making defensive adjustments. Give him credit, though, he changed the alignment after the kickoff debacle to force Thomas into making more decisions; this lead to Thomas' fumble giving us the ball back.

Sunday Morning Comes

This is later than usual because I just can't get my head around what happened yesterday. Not because we lost. We should have lost. Not because we were in a position to win. We should have won. This is the first Georgia Tech game in a while where I felt like they match up to us well. Not talent wise, but being in a position to win ball games wise. And we should have won, except we deserved to lose.

There'll be plenty of time to debate the micro level stuff: offensive line play, defensive line play, Quayvon Hicks kick return team face, fumbles, kickoffs......but the bigger issue is that we are still so afraid of messing up that we don't want to go win ballgames. Instead, we try not to lose them. Think about the squib kick. Tech hasn't had but five kick returns of longer than 30 yards all season. They needed to get the ball to the Georgia 40 or so for a hope and a prayer FG. We gave away half of what they needed by kicking it to the 30 yard line.

And you can't say that Mark Richt hasn't changed his mindset on things. We ran a fake FG. We didn't keep trying to run the ball on Ted Roof when it was clear our Oline was having their worst game of the season. We kept going to quick slant that was working. We finally adjusted our defensive alignment to pressure Thomas (albeit three quarters late).

I feel for Hutson Mason. The interception wasn't his fault, any more than it was Mitchell's fault. The Tech DB made a heck of a play on the ball to intercept it. We've been saying for six months that Hutson Mason wasn't the type of QB that can put a team on his shoulders and win a game for you. Yet, he put Georgia on his shoulders and got us a lead with 18 seconds left in the game.

That should be enough to win.

Like I said, we'll get to the micro level stuff later, but right now the football program has some stuff to figure out. As a program, we are about where I thought we'd be this season (actually, I felt 9-3 was our upside). The problem is we are so inconsistent. We look like we could beat anyone in the world one week, then struggle fail the next.

That is the thing that I can't get my head around. Yesterdays' game was a near perfect microcosm of our entire season. We looked spectacular, then we'd look over matched. We'd dominate the line of scrimmage, then we'd get pushed around. We'd make fantastic special teams plays, then we'd do the exact opposite.

We were in position to win a game that we had no business winning (expect we should have won), but we chose to play to not lose. The hard part is if I'm being honest, I felt exactly this way in 2001 after the Music City Bowl, and countless times since then. That's a tough place to be.

Friday morning meltdown: Georgia Tech

  • Nick Chubb's ankle
  • The knees of all our defensive players.
  • DeAndre Smelter running free for 99 yards while a corner back throws his hands up in disgust because a safety was supposed to rotate over in coverage.
  • Missouri wins today and our guys give it up.
  • Arkansas wins today and our guys give it up.
  • Tech fans in my section.
  • B back outside veers for 11 yards a play.
  • Georgia Tech players with pieces of the hedges in their mouth tomorrow about 4pm.
