You won't believe where Fred Gibson is

Fred Gibson's NFL career never really got off the ground. He was on some practice squads, and he made some preseason game appearances. However, he never made an actual NFL roster.  This season, he has resurfaced as an Albuquerque ThunderbirdThe Thunderbirds are a D-League team in the NBA's Development League.

Through seven games, he's averaging 15 minutes, 5.6 points and 2.6 rebounds per game.  For a good back story on Fred's move to hoops, check out DaugMan's blog.

I wonder if he has still got the car.

Boy, he could dunk. Was there another dimension to his game?

Every once in a while he'd be good for a completely random 3.

You'd have to think as soon as the D-League players realize he doesn't like contact that career's over too.

Pretty good defender, most of his breakaways were a result of good man-on-man defense.

I believe Fred was a 4th round pick by the Steelers, not a 5th round pick of the Vikings.

More power to Fred for getting the opportunity. He seems like a good guy. He was a good player for us.

The funny thing about Gibson is that he probably would have been at UF if Kwame Brown had not opted to enter the NBA draft. I remember an article during his Freshman year where Fred said that he and Brown had become good friends after playing on the same AAU basketball team. They had planned on trying to room together at the same school. Kwame had committed to UF in his Jr. year and signed a LOI w/UF in the early signing period. However, between Nov and the football signing date it became pretty much a given that Brown was going to be a lottery pick and possible #1 in the NBA Draft. Gibson opted to go to UGA rather than UF.

I'll never forget him doing the Gator Chop at the free-throw line down there in stink town, as we upset them. Simply awesome.
