What a sham...I've known Asher since he was a young man. I wish him well though, and our defense too, for that matter.

I thought another year would do him good, but that is not my decision, it is his. Good luck buddy. We'll miss you Tucker Boy.

This sucks. This bothers me more than the Stafford/Moreno departures.

Richt always makes sure we have at least a decent offense.

But our defense has been the key to our dominating years.

All I can figure is his family really needs the money. And I can understand that. The problem is, if he is a late round pick he doesn't get a contract. He'll be at camp desperately fighting to make a team.

This is why div I, major conference college football and basketball players need to get paid. $50,000 a year at a minimum for the amount of money they make for their schools.

They basically do...Most of the colleges these kids go to are not cheap. They are getting tuition and room and board paid. Not to mention all the extra crap the players get for going to bowl games and whatnot. I would venture to say the average football player in college would not have been able to afford the school they play at if they did not get a full ride. So you want to say they should get paid 50k a year and a full ride. I think the fact that they are given the ability to get a good degree from a school for free is enough. If they want to leave early and not get that degree then that is on them and they do not need to be compensated for it.

I wonder if Asher figured another year under Martinez's defense would cost him a shot at the NFL and decided to leave early?

Great. A built-in excuse for Martinez next year..

"Well, Toby Jackson never qualified, and we lost a senior safety and our best cover corner to the draft..."

What is the story with Toby Jackson?

I just think that if he had returned and had a big year he could have a big pay-day coming in 2010. Best of luck to him, i hope it's the right choice, right now it seems like the wrong one to me.

I never hold it against anybody who leaves for the money. That's just part of life. If I'd had that choice I'd have probably taken the money too. I do think that Allen could've benefited from one more year in college. Of course maybe he'll have a good combine. That matters more to a lot of teams than what you do on the field anyways.

You're an idiot Muckbeast.

$50K/year minimum for college football players.

Yeah... I can't think of anything that could possibly go wrong with that plan.

Stick to the online fantasy worlds, dude.

what's worse than giving a young 23 yr old kid 60+ million to play in the pros after he's earned it? Giving an 18yr old college $50k who hasn't.

A signing bonus should provide enough cash to stash away to finish paying for a year or two of tuition, fees, books, etc.

It's not a decision about an education. It's a decision about money.

Apparently Reshad Jones is now leaving too. Good riddance.

The 2006 class was an utter and complete bust. All that talent and they were worthless. See ya.

Yeah, let him go. This 2006 class has been such an absolute joke. I can't think of a bigger waste of talent than this class.

I have said all season that Jones was my least favorite Dawg this season. He never wraps up on his tackles, and he was constantly looking for the huge ESPN highlight hit. In addition to that, I am of the opinion that was quite often flagged for stupid mistakes. However, I looked up his numbers and is ranked 2nd statically behind Rennie. Jones was 2nd on the team with 76 tackles, 1st in INT's with 5, he had 3 pass breakups, and 8 pass deflections. Not a terrible season. I would hate to see what the 08 Dawgs defense would look like with 76 less tackles. Good luck in the NFL Mr. Jones. I for one will not miss you too much, but I think CWM will.

Nice there, 2006 class, throwing in MS and KM when all they did was give everything they had. They left for 30-60 million between the two of them, I don't fault them. Stafford had numbers that rank with our all time best seasons and our offense had the most points in a season its ever had since 2002 with less games to play. It's not his fault we never had a stable OL, a TE who could catch the ball consistently, a defense in 2008 or a special teams in 2008. Yeah for sure there are some "me" guys on the team, but to throw an entire group of young men under the bus is idiotic. Especially guys like Moreno and Stafford

Tuition and $500 at a bowl game is nothing when you're making hundreds of millions of dollars off their blood, sweat, and career ending injuries.

If you don't want to pay them in college, pay the money into a pension or a trust they can collect from at retirement age, or earlier if they don't go to go pro.

What we have in div 1 football/basketball is indentured servitude. These kids have to give away their million dollar valued work for the pathetic crumbs of tuition, costs, and a few occasional gifts. That's why corruption runs rampant, because the kids know they are being taken advantage of financially and they need the money.

Uh, Muckbeast, you come across as mildly retarded. "Pathetic crumbs of tuition"? Really? Have you looked at the cost of tuition recently? And in your world does EVERY scholarship player get $50k a year? I've heard some dumb things in my day, but this one sir takes the cake.

They are not giving away anything. They (and their parents BTW) enter into a contract. In exchange for their playing football (or whatever sport), they get benefits X, Y, Z.

They can choose not to sign. It would be tough on a football player not to play for 3 years and still be a pro prospect. A basketball player could skip college and go play overseas for 1 year or I guess play AAU ball. (I think that any athlete should be able to declare for the pros right out of high school just for the record).

The long term benefits of a college education are also quite nice when you consider the increased in potential earnings over not going to college.

Let's see 50,000 times 85 scholarship players is $4.25 million every year. Do you think any court would allow a university to pay just the football players? Not sure how many athletes UGA has on athletic scholarship at one time, but I am going to guess 150 full scholarships (some sports divide a scholarship). That is $7.5 million per year. That is a pretty tidy sum.

If you pay them, then maybe make them pay for their tuition, room and board. It would be a good lesson in some ways.

I was amazed at the harsh words on the AJC site about the possibility of Reshard Jones declaring. If he read that, then I would think he is gone. I am not sure this is a good thing for either him or the defense. A person can improve his tackling; he has a lot of game experience that will be missed.
