Derrick Favors to announce Wed @ 6:30

South Atlanta center Derrick Favors will announce his college choice [between UGA, GTU and Memphis] tomorrow night at 6:30.

We hear Uga has a good chance, regardless of Felton's future, due to his relationship with Trey Thompkins.

UPDATE: AJC reports Derrick Favors picked Tech. No link available as of yet.

UPDATE2: Until about 72 hours ago, I thought that Favors coming to UGA was about as realistic as the Tooth Fairy having beers with me. But there were lots of rumblings since monday. Turns out. Not so much. There were 10-12 kids in the Top 150 in GA this year. Felton signed NONE of them. Approximately 15-20 kids overall will sign scholarship offers with high major schools from our home state. This is not how you follow-up an SEC Tournament Championship and the grand opening of a $30 million practice facility. --> PWD

If he commits to Georgia, there is no way Evans can fire Felton. None

BCS-Sucks,

There is a way Evans can fire Felton - We continue to lose games and play in an empty basketball gym.

Sadly, I hear GT feels quite confident about their chances for Mr. Favors.

BCS sucks,

I'm sure he'd be aware of the chances of that happening when he'd commit, and would be prepared for it in case that happens.

He's committing to Tech. He's committing on ESPN cameras right before Tech plays on ESPN...

Well, I kind of figured our defense couldn't get much worse from this past season.

I was wrong.

Let's hope Prince/Evans/Cuff/Smith/etc. pull a Bruce Thornton and miraculously get good. This really sucks.

Hey Anon @4:28, go ahead and become a UF fan you already sound the part. Asher has done nothing but good for UGA and is only leaving because he got unexpectedly good news back from the Draft review board. What has he ever done that isn't in the team's best interest? Going to the NFL doesn't mean you hate UGA, it means you have a chance to fulfill your lifelong dream and make millions while playing a game. Good for him. Asher will be missed, but we have plenty of young'uns waiting for their turn. This probably doesn't hurt us with Gref Reid either. Go Dawgs!

All I know is we'll be lucky to go to a bowl next year.

Anon 4:28...

If you are truly contemplating becoming a gator fan, you were never a UGA fan to begin with.

That's like saying that you are going to start pulling for the dealer because you keep losing at Blackjack...

Anon. 4:28-

You are clearly either already a Florida fan or an idiot (not that these terms are mutually exclusive).

3.85 GPA in HS, True Grit award winner, best defensive performance in the Cap One Bowl game, and played the last several games with a broken hand...

I said it before...it is a good sign for your program to lose players early. It shows you are recruiting great talent and helps you continue to recruit great talent.

AA is a damn fine dawg and will be a great pro.

Lucky to go to a bowl game next year? Give me a break.

Anonymous said...

Lucky to go to a bowl...right. Branden Smith will get his shot right away, for sure. This disappoints because I thougth Asher was committed to turning it around, but it is what it is.

Richt has won 10 games 6 or 8 years, never won less than 8 and won less than 9 only once. We have played in New Year's games 6 of the last 7 years and in the premier non-New Year's game the other year...and we're not going to go to a bowl this year.

We won 9 games in a year we started a freshman QB, with no running game and couldn't catch a cold. Next year we're going to start a 5th year senior at QB with an experienced OL and the best WR to ever wear silver britches. We'll be fine. This is when CMR is at his best.

"and in the premier non-New Year's game the other year"

Is the Music City Bowl really that prestigious, haha?

In my opinion, I think Asher should have stayed. In a league where no contract is guaranteed (except for the Signing Bonus, which is not that great in the 2nd round where Asher is projected) he probably should have stayed his Senior year and with a projected big year become a first-rounder.

Anonymous said...

Uhhh...read a little closer Anon 5:23. The non-New Year's bowl the dawgs went to in the last 7 years was the Chick-fil-a bowl, which IS the premier non-New Year's bowl. UGA went to the Music City Bowl in 2001, Richt's first year...8 years ago. The last seven have looked like this, as I'm sure you know:

Sugar
Capital One
Outback
Sugar
Chick-fil-a
Sugar
Captital One

I knew there was no way there were 22 comments about Derrick Favors.

Sigh.

Wish there wasn't such widespread apathy for our hoops program. Things would be better if more people cared 1/5 what they do for football.

Good luck Asher, time to step up Boykin.

Wow .. I am surprised by Favors making the announcement. All signs point to Tech though.

Most likely Hewitt used his "Chris Bosh" sales pitch.

If Favors can rush the passer or is a great cover corner, I'm excited.

Dubbayoo said...

I'm sure it's just my imagination running away with me but why does it always feel like players at other schools come back at the prospect of a big season whereas @ UGA they leave?

I'm starting to think this early exit trend will either result in freshman ineligibility or the end of redshirting (unless someone is REALLY hurt)

Anonymous said...

I regard the hoops program the smae way I do the post-Turner Braves: if those in charge don't seem to care, why should I?

Anon. 6:41, you hit that one out of the park. Once you accept that what our BB program has been, is what it's going to be, losing doesn't hurt so much. When we let CTS get away I knew we were not then, nor would we ever be serious about having a BB program we could take pride in.
AA was, and is a DGD. For those who want to bash this young man please find another team to follow.
AA, you go GATA, and make dawg nation proud. Thank you for bleeding red and black for the last three years.

Why any big name recruit would want to play for Felton is beyond me. The man has spun the wheels of Georgia basketball in mediocrity. Is there any chance for reprieve at the end of this season? Will we finally find a good head coach??? I wish I could believe that we will.

Anonymous said...

Anyone really think that Favors would make his decision known and it is one hour before a Tech home game and its in Atlanta, and it not be Ga Tech. This is so obvious. The only catch here is that he would have to play for Paul Hewitt for a whole year before going pro and that may hurt his ranking.

Anonymous said...

Anon @ 1:33

But if Favors is a dawg at heart, wouldn't it be awesome if he did Tech that way?

I don't know what he'll do and I'm probably more worried about Asher leaving than Favors coming at the moment. . . which is typical I think of a Georgia fan.

If Favors goes to Tech, then we should fire Felton before the year is over and throw some ESPN money around Volunteer football style to land someone big. (I am thinking of Rick Majerus, but that's just because I know so little about CBB and RM is a big dude).

Anonymous said...

anybody know anything yet?

He chose Tech. Worst. Sports. Week. Ever?

If it hadn't been for that girl sh*tting herself, there wouldn't be a single speck of Dawg good news to report since Jan 2.

Felton is probably gone now

Anonymous said...

Anon, 6:47, this is great news. Favors' talent will be squandered by that scrub coach that Gtu has(see Crittendon, Javaris; Young, Thaddeus; Bosh, Chris; etc.) AND this puts the final nail in Felton's coffin.

Anyone who was still arguing to keep Felton can officially give up now. We should just go ahead and fire him tonight. And that is the best sports news that UGA could get.

Anonymous said...

So Tech gets Favors for what, one year? Long-term, that doesn't do any program any good. We need to set up for some sustained success. Felton, or whoever comes in here, at least has some foundation to build on.

Anonymous said...

actually we already have 4r commits. #6 PG, #28 PF, #27 and 29 SF. that's one 5 star, two 4 stars and two 3 stars. uhh, i'd say that's setting up for sustained success!

Anonymous said...

NO FAVORS TO FELTON! Final nail in coffin - Felton drove it in himself with his own hammer.

Anonymous said...

7:43- that's what I'm talking about. I don't think a one-year wonder is gonna help us in the long run. In the SHORT term, I hope we can find some league wins!

It is not surprising that Favors went the GIT route. When you think about it, what does Felton have to offer right now that Hewitt does not? He can play right away at both schools, but he will be a stud around GIT. On campus in Athens he is just another athlete. When you really think about it, Teck will always land the big time local talent until something is done to redirect our hoops program. The Dawgs can not sell trips to Cameron Indoor in Durham, or the Dean Dome in Chapel Hill, or the ACC Tourney for that matter. We get to push Starksville, MS and Columbia, SC! Where would you go if you were a big time recruit. We need a huge facelift on our hoops program, NOW!

Anonymous said...

Felton is "dead man walking".

Anonymous said...

You're fired. It has nothing to do with Favors. 18 points. It has to do with 18 points.

Anonymous said...

I have been the biggest Felton supporter since day 1. My parents and I go to basketball games often and I have wanted nothing more than for him to be successful at Georgia. He is a man of integrity and a great role model for his players, but his time has come. He's a great guy and I wish him well in the future but it's time for a change. We have so much great talent in Georgia only to have them leave the state. I don't blame any of them.

I will laugh and laugh forever about that one!
