I'm sure this season has Mike Adams and the UGA and ACCPD in a tizzy. What is this, 4 home games with a 7pm or later kick this year?

In other news, any word yet on when the UGA/GTU kick will be?

SAWB,

The Tech Game is part of the ACC TV Contract because it's at their place.

ABC already has an 8:00 pm game slated for that night of Notre Dame at Stanford.

So the logical assumption is that we'll be at 3:30 on ABC.

A night kick vs. Kentucky might be disappointing news for some but I think its a good thing for Georgia. Whether the game means anything or not, a noonish kick against the Wildcats always spells difficulties for the Dawgs. The atmosphere is tremendously different better at night and it should help us avoid the sleep walking through the first part of the game. A win over Auburn would still give us a realistic shot at the Outback and Chick-fil-a going forward. A loss this week would make Kentucky rather meaningless given the fact that the best we could hope for would be Nashville.

BCSAV,

You did your math wrong.

A win against AU and UK does give us a shot at the Chick-Fil-A (although that would likely require a victory over GT as well).

But a loss against AU means that the UK game is for bowl eligibility and likely only a trip to Shreveport or Birmingham.

To get Nashville or ATL, we need to beat AU and UK. Otherwise, we're going to Memphis, Shreveport, Bham or staying home for the holidays.

We'll deal with the GT game when it gets here.

7:45 PM? F-you ESPN and your money.

since we suck to the extreme, be glad the game is televised at all.

mitch said...

If we didnt suck so bad no one would have a problem with the 7:45 game. I blame Willie.

Our team's current record does not change the fact that I am sick of the night game. For me, the novelty or special feeling of a night game has passed.

15-20 years ago when there just a handful of games on tv, the night game was special because the game was selected. But now there are 45 million games on a variety of stations on any given Saturday so I do not think its so great to be playing at night on tv.

Now the night game is just an excuse by a bunch of knuckleheads to get drunk, trash the campus, and try to create a menacing atmosphere for fans of both teams all in the name of "protecting our home field advantage."

I can understand wanting a night home game in late August or in the month of September because an afternoon game can be brutal for fans. But a night game in November in Athens against Kentucky just sounds like we are one-step from playing on a Thursday night.

I like to get super drunk at night game, Anon 3:41. Bleaux me.

Get use to it because we will play 3+ night games at home every year now with the new TV deal. We will never play on a thursday night. If you dont like it then give your tickets to someone else who does.

@ Mitch--I bet will play a road game on a Thursday night in the next 3 years.

Paul,

I don't think we won't need a victory over GT (if we beat AU and UK) to get in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. In fact, if we were to win out from here, (unlikely, but hypothetically let's say we pull it together) we could still end up in Tampa.

In that scenario, given that Florida and Bama remain undefeated, the first three SEC bowls would go as such: UF or Bama in National Championship, Bama or UF in Sugar, LSU in Capital One.

Yes, traditionally the Cotton chooses from the West, but it doesn't have to. Looking over the remaining schedules of the SEC teams, I say Tennessee's got the best chance to win out, resulting in an 8-4 record. I think Cotton picks them up, knowing that they finished the year strongly and that their fans will travel well. Even though Auburn edged UT in their head-to-head this year, I still think the Cotton picks an 8-4 UT over a 7-5 Auburn. Ole Miss will likely go at least 7-5 with losses to UT and LSU. This scenario requires UT to beat Ole Miss, but I think Kiffin & crew have the edge over Rebels in that one. Tennessee was actually the last SEC East school to be in the Cotton Bowl, after the 2004 season.

That leaves the Outback to chose from an 8-4 UGA, a 7-5 South Carolina, a 7-5 Auburn, and a 7-5 Ole Miss. Naturally they'd choose us; we'd have the best record of the remaining teams, we're in the East, and we'll have head-to-head wins over two of those remaining teams.

But for arguments sake, let's say Cotton chooses a 7-5 Auburn over an 8-4 UT. Outback then takes UT. At 8-4, we'll still be the best option remaining and will go to the Chick-fil-a.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
But, we'll honestly probably lose to GT. In that case, the only thing that changes about the above situation is that we are 7-5 instead of 8-4. If that were to happen, the Cotton could still choose Auburn or Ole Miss if it wanted to, UT would go to the Outback, and Chick-fil-a would choose between us, South Carolina, and Ole Miss or Auburn. Each team will have the same record (7-5), but UGA will pack out the statium, bringing the most money. We'd also have won the head-to-heads...the Chick-fil-a will choose us.

I guess my point is, with wins over Auburn and Kentucky, I think Chick-fil-A is the worst we can do. If we win out, there's still a shot at Tampa.

mitch said...

I would take you on that bet. The only time we would play a thursday game is if it was away and the first game of the year. Not to mention damon and Adams have said they never will play a thursday game. Next year we open the season with a pasty at home so thats a no, the following year we open with louisville at home so thats a no and the next year after that we have an open slot that will be filled with a pasty so thats a no too.

8 wins? Oh, to dare to dream!

Nashville wouldn't require us to be better than 6-6. It is, in this case, all relative.

Unless our bloggers know some folks on the inside?

Just please, if we bowl, please don't send us to Memphis. I think we can hang with a bowl-eligible dregs of the Big East or ACC, but Houston is taking few prisoners this year (Miners excepted, of course).

Yes, it's infinitely more likely Georgia would open the season in the Georgia Dome than play any game at any point in the season at any locale on a Thursday night.

You will never, never, never, never... (you get the idea?) see Georgia play a Thursday home game. The logistics simply can't be overcome.

Ah, there was a time not too long ago when we had a policy prohibiting night games in November Between the Hedges. It was put in place way back with the return of the lights and lasted at least through the 1980s, and probably into the 1990s.

Personally, I don't mind at all. I love chilly nights in Athens.

PWD,
Thanks for the info/update. I always forget that the ACC has television rights on any night other than Thursdays.

Mitch and Others,

RE: Thursdays

We have played on Thursdays, Fridays and Mondays over the past 30 years, and we'll likely play them again.

Thursday - 1995 at GT (away)
Friday - 1994 vs. GT (home)
Monday - 1982 vs. Clem (home)
Monday - 1985 vs. Bama (home)

Both Monday games were on Labor Day. The Thurs/Fri games were Thanksgiving weekend.

We will play a Thursday Game again. It's simply a matter of time. HOWEVER, it won't be in Athens. The logistics as you said are just impossible to overcome.

Drummer,

To clarify 2 things:

1. The Outback and Cotton pick at the same time. If the Outback wants UT, then they get them. The Cotton can't select an Eastern Team until the Outback selects.

2. The Cotton has the ability to select Notre Dame once in the next 3 years. See:
http://www.attcottonbowl.com/fan-guide/general-info

If the Cotton has to choose between 7 win Ole Miss, 7 win South Carolina, 7 win UGA and 7 win Notre Dame....it wouldn't be the worst decision to give them ND. ND doesn't buy a ton of tickets ... but the other team sells a ton of tickets for the chance to beat their a$$.

In 1983, Charlie Dean scored Georgia's final touchdown against UCLA on a Sunday morning.

What a sad state of affairs. It has not be that long ago when we thought there was an outside shot of playing in the BCS Championship game. Now all that we are left with is dreaming of the Peach Bowl! Sure hope CMR is willing to honestly access this team and staff. However, given the fact that no QB move was made following the GAYtor game, that appears unlikely. GATA Dawgs!

Unknown said...

Anon - That game started around 8:00 pm on Saturday, Sept. 3, 1983.

And it just ran long. I don't think anyone is really debating that night games can end late. ;-)

DrummerDawg said...

Paul,

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I didn't realize the specific rules about the Outback Bowl and Cotton Bowl picking among the division. The Outback then will definitely pick UT; and I hadn't considered Notre Dame as an option for the Cotton, but it certainly would be a big draw for them. A 7-5 ND is a possibility for that slot. And as much as I don't care for them, that's realistically the worst they'll do at this point.

So that would leave the Chick-fil-a to pick among a 7-5 Auburn, 7-5 Ole Miss, 7-5 South Carolina, and a 8-4 or 7-5 UGA, if we beat UK and Auburn. I still like the Chick-fil-a taking us out of that bunch, even with a loss to Tech.

Potential future Thursday games, IMO:

2013 opener @ Clemmins
2014 @ Arkansas (week b4 Florida)
2015 @ Miss State

This ESPN/SEC contract has completely changed the landscape of Saturday games as we know them.

We are beholden to the almighty dollar and the worldwide leader. And I, for one, welcome our new Bristol-based overlords.

Really sux that the basketball team will be playing at the exact same time as the UK game (at UAB).

Anonymous said...

What really sux is the fact that CMR is unable to fire anyone. Or promote a QB that will actually help the Dawgs in 2010!

NRBQ said...

No, what really sux is all the banter about which 3rd or 4th level bowl the Dawgs MIGHT play in.

It will be watched only by us hard-cores, and forgotten by everyone else in a couple days.

But, HEY!, we stood by our long-suffering senior QB, and mostly kept those brash freshmen out of the mix.

Wow, years prior everyone whined because we never had night games in Athens. Now they bitch because we do.

I love night games in Athens. There's nothing quite like it. I'm going to this UK game and it's the only game this year that I'm really going to get to put on a full tailgate for, and I'm thrilled it's a 7:45pm kickoff. What else have you got to do on Saturday, Georgia fans? Seriously? Enjoy the day in Athens.

What the hell is wrong with a night game?

PTC DAWG said...

You jokers talking about Richt firing someone, acting like he should do it right now, are whistling past the graveyard. It's not going to happen NOW. Get over it, support the team or get off the bus.

That said, I expect wholesale changes at years end on the D side of the ball for sure.

BEAT THE BARN!!

I can tell you what is wrong with a night game in Athens. Getting home at 2:30am.

But I do love them. Just hate when the game ends and you have to drive. Ugh! I am already dreading it.

Just checked the NCAA website on stats. UGA has the 4th toughest schedule in the nation this year (including the schedules of the pending games).

Ouch.

Paul, all the talk around Jax is that the Gator Bowl will select Notre Dame and most likely Miami, does the cotton bowl have a pick before the gator bowl? They are iffy about Miami, but seem dead set that Notre Dame will be in Jax on New Years Day. Also, I usually get to a game a year, and this year its UK, and I'm stoked for the night game!

Maybe I have the day wrong, but I seem to remember a Thanksgiving Day game against Tech. I remember a fight broke out during the game. It sticks in my mind because my high school had bonfire pep rally that night since we were playing in the state quarterfinals on Friday night. It was my senior year of high school, which would have been the '93 season.

I'll let any old folks crash as my place for the UK game for half what Holiday Inn charges for a weekend. Any takers?

Big Scott....

Yes the fight game was on Thanksgiving Day 1993. I was there too. I think both UGA & Yech were 5-5 going into the game, so it essentially was the bowl game for us that year. It was close til the 4th quarter and then UGA began to ring it up on them. I remember Goff running out onto the field and literally throwing our guys back over his shoulder. An absolute shower of cups came down out of the north (UGAs) grandstands onto the field. It was a fun one....
