The Rave Is Over

From this morning's Athens Banner-Herald:
"Student representative Trey Sinyard told the board that the timing of some commercials being shown on the Sanford Stadium videoboard during the game result in 'killing the atmosphere.'

McGarity said after the meeting that Georgia is 'taking a hard look,' at some of the presentations, including 'canned music.'

'I’m pretty much a traditionalist, a conservative,' McGarity said. 'If the bands there, I want to hear the band playing. I think our fans do too.'"
Thanks you, Jesus.  When I went to Starkville, I was unsure how the State athletic administration managed to turn Davis-Wade into a dance party, complete with techno music before every kick off.  Look, if I wanted to go to a dance club with blaring techno music, I'd buy Hawks tickets.

Good luck, Greg McGarity.  Let the band play.

I blasted him for his scheduling philosophy. I will praise him for this. Maybe I can leave the earplugs at home now.

I still vote we keep the Baba O'Riley pre-kickoff music

Or maybe Arena2 football.

I don't know what the love is for Baba O'Riley; I like the song as much as most folks, but I don't see why folks are so enamored with it.

As for the piped-in music and gameday atmosphere, I haven't actually been in Sanford for a real game since the Bama game in 03 (You know, when we almost blew what was like a four touchdown lead), so I can't speak to the current atmosphere.

What would be nice, though, would be to find some way to make it so that other teams actually feared coming to Sanford Stadium. I don't have the numbers on our home record, but it doesn't seem to be that great. I guess dominant home records come with dominant programs, but presenting a great atmosphere with a feeling of intimidation for opponents would HAVE to speak volumes to recruits on their visits.

I'm frustrated with the music for 2 reasons. First, it's too loud and sounds like the speakers are blown out (i.e. it sounds like crap). Second, the choice of music is questionable MOST of the time.

However, I'd be more on board with the "let's hear the band" movement if they were actually a great band. I'm an alum and lifelong fan but I've never been impressed with our band. We need more than just Bad, Bad Leroy Brown. I realize this viewpoint probably isn't shared by the majority but there is a small contingent of people who agree (you know, the people who actually pay attention to other bands and can objectively look at it, rather than just blindly say "we have a great band").

isnt this just a function of what the music is? remember the soulja boy song? everyone loved that! was anyone at the s.c. game? they had some upbeat/techno-ish song that their fans loved. much like everything else, we just havent found the tune yet. there was a song at the first game that seemed to be catchy/popular where all the students said "put your hands up" or something like that. i dont recall it being played at arkansas. i realize i sound really old. which, i am.

Amen! I'm loving McGarity so far!

Amen Greg McGarity. I don't mind a little fire up the fans intro music - the Baba O'Riley is fine - and I didn't mind "Soldier Boy" back in the day, but it has gone TOO FAR. Let the band play.

Call me crazy, but I attended the South Carolina game and I thought it was awesome when they played Sandstorm. The crowd was pumped. The band can't do this...

Have you actually listened to the band recently? We play a lot more than just Bad, Bad Leroy Brown. We have made strides in trying to play more popular music to try and get the crowd pumped up and into the game.
The main problem that I have with people dissing on the band is that most of the people who are doing so either don't listen to us at the games or are too drunk to care. The UGA Redcoat Band is one of the top bands in the SEC and in the country.
While I'll agree that we do play a few songs that pretty much kill the mood, a vast majority of our repertoire is there to help pump up the football team and to help get the crowd into the game.

I think that sometimes the music can kill an atmosphere, but in the same sense, it can drive the crowd into a frenzy that is much needed. Just like mentioned above, when they would play the Soulja Boy song back in the Knowshon days, not only did the team get fired up on the sidelines, the crowd went wild.

It's not about a 'party' atmosphere, it's about getting these kids up and ready to play some ball. I think the music is important and can be timed better, and of course, they need to keep up with the current 'hot songs', but other than that.

Play it loud and at the right time and it's definitely a driving force for the team and fans.

It would be great if the band would play more that cadence/drum beat stuff. I get tired of being able to hear the opposing band play more often and at more appropriate times. I can say this past weekend @ CU the piped music really did get old, no respect for their band.

Play band play!! Just Play More Often!!

the reason teams like msu and scu are so much louder than we are is because their students are jumping up and down and rocking to popular music. while our students are making fun of our band playing "hey baby" 5 times a game. turn off the band and crank up the music during breaks and before kickoffs

Didn't go to Starkville this year, but in Columbia they had more piped in music than an elevator factory.

Agree with the poster that said the band needs to step it up. The redcoats are great fans and , I'm sure , very talented musicians. But, the band director sucks arse if what we've been treated to for the last two decades is any indication.

Nobody wants to hear "Red Door" , "Bad , Bad Leroy Brown" or that super gay diddy they play to fire the defense up.

It's too bad that we don't recruit old white guys.

I knew it had gone too far when they played Miley Cyrus. All us over 30 somethings had to ask our kids what it was. Plus, "Here comes the boom" is foolish when your defense is whiffing on tackles.

+10 for McGarity!

I love loud music as much as anyone, and I've seen the Who several times, but piped in music has no place at a college game. Go see the XFL, the Hawks, or Ga Tech if you want to hear that.

I didn't realize the students could only get excited if the latest music was playing. I thought cheering for the team was enough, but I guess that's been a little harder than usual this year.

Baba O'Riley is cool. The music can be cool. But, the right people need to be screening what will and will not be played. The Academy Sports adds are just AWFUL. The music is way too loud and just doesn't fit. Just get rid of those and it will be a good start.

All The Way Turnt Up-- GOTTA GO. They played it on every third down, with an awful video at Bobby Dodd last year during the Tech game, and it is nauseating that it's made its way to Sanford.

Wow, folks. I guess we've sunk pretty low when some posters are bashing the Redcoats. As an objective fan that does listen to other bands, I would put ours among the VERY best. Everyone ease up and support the Dawgs. And, yes, that includes the band.

I sit in section in 104 and I imagine the problem I have with increased band music is the same problem anyone on that side in that corner will have. WE CAN'T HEAR THE UGA BAND. EVER. I like the band just fine and wouldn't mind them playing more, but as it is it is hard to get excited by this distant bass drum. On the other side of the equation, it was awesome only being able to hear the bass drum portion of Rocky Top.

Anonymous said...

we need a good balance of both. i think most people want a good popular song sometimes and hear the redcoats sometimes...

and "all the way turnt up" sucks. i remember we played "indestructible" by disturbed one year and that was off the chain.

Baba and thats it. Redcoats and The Who!

If you survey people around the country and ask them to name the best bands, you'll get schools like Texas, Oklahoma, USC, Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame, LSU, and Alabama. You will rarely get Georgia. Our band is not a great band. Nowhere close in my opinion...but definitely not great.

And I'm sure the students in the band are good musicians and they may technically hit their music right...but that's not the issue here.

on another somewhat related note, our band needs to learn not to play when WE have the ball and WE are in the huddle or even making our way to the line of scrimmage. Is it just me? I am always yellin' for the band to shut up at those times. I mean we need to keep the stadium quiet while we have the ball. Right?
