That Seth and Cy are just about the only thing the AJC have going for it. It comes as no surprise that Bradley both praises Tech and takes a swipe at Kirby.

Schultz on Gurley (for the third time)

Although I'd venture a guess his next Gurley article will blame Ebola, but you know, that's what gets the click throughs.

FSU’s approach with the Winston situation has differed from Georgia’s with Todd Gurley.Ok, it isn't true love, but he makes a good point (kinda), noting that Georgia didn't want to chance playing an ineligible Gurley and forfeiting a game.

Mark Bradley and Clay Travis disagree about how bad Georgia's HC job is

I normally make a point of not linking to Travis, mainly because I am as petty as he is, but he ranks Georgia as the 3rd best job, then takes a swipe at Coach Richt's strict polices (or injuries, I'm not sure):

Which makes the Bulldog failures all the more entertaining. Georgia is the South's own Charlie Brown, perpetually attempting to kick a football through the uprights just as Lucy pulls the ball away. With the growth of Atlanta and the state, there's no reason why the next 20 years shouldn't be crowned with growing Bulldog success. Except, you know, it's Georgia football.Now, I'm ok with part of that, but my favorite part is how fired up it got Bradley. Bradley took the time to pick apart Travis' logic, which in itself is high ironic comedy. Oh, and read the comments. Better than normal, I swear.

Cue the tUGA posts
Scott Stricklin, who should be lauded for the job he's done this season with Georgia baseball, is in the AJC (I'm not linking the article) for a minor violation. Minor accidental texting back a prospect, which he reported the at 7am the next morning. And he's given, by UGA, a two week ban on contacting prospect, all done before he was reported to the SEC by UGA.
AJC devoted four paragraphs to the one text violation. Basically, he got half as much ink as Tech did for their violations involving whatever it was they did a couple of years ago that cost them the 2009 ACC title.
Glad they are on the case.

Why the AJC is such a joke
A UGA player not getting arrested for receiving a relatively minor citation makes the paper. While a two year long NCAA investigation into Georgia Tech resulting in sanctions goes unreported until the final day of the process.
That's not a shot at Chip Towers. It's a huge shot at the gross incompetence and/or negligence of the former Tech beat writer and the AJC's Sports Editor. Every time I think I'm done commenting on the GT thing...I get dragged back into it.

Some good news for a change
Furman Bisher finally retired. I know, many of you thought he retired during the Carter Administration. Some people say he was a good writer back when he was alive, but that means you must enjoy reading about 1) golf, 2) Georgia Tech football, and/or 3) horse racing. I'm positive the first is not a sport, and doubtful about the other two.
For many reasons, he retires overrated and unappreciated (as opposed to underappreciated). For example, Bisher is why Bear Bryant hated the City of Atlanta.
On an unrelated note, did you ever notice how much Furman Bisher looks like Jack Warden?

Things Furman Bisher Doesn't Understand
That list apparently includes email, letters, the internet and the telephone. To be fair, Bear Bryant and Wally Butts could've told you that he didn't know how to work a phone...at least not a party line. But I digress.Apparently, Bisher is unfamiliar with those methods of communication and research given that he didn't use any of them to ask Damon Evans, "Why are you using a search firm to hire a basketball coach?" Instead, he wrote a long article stating that UGA shouldn't use a search firm, and "I have no idea how a search firm operates." His entire premise being that Bobby Knight is right there. Why do you need a firm to hire a guy that's just sitting right there.
If he really wanted to understand why we were using a search firm, he could've read his own newspaper. Last week Damon Evans outlined why he was using a firm stating:
Evans was asked why UGA chose to hire the search firm.Or he could've read my site. Or this very thoughtful piece on Parker's web site that explains why search firms are used.
“They’re very reputable in the business,” he said. “They have a strong reputation for the amount of detail they put into the process, how they develop their searches, the people they’ve place, their background checks. They’re able to assist institutions in making a high number of high-level contacts in a short amount of time. And the manner and discretion with which they handle the process is very important.”
Or frankly, he could have just come right and said that he doesn't think Damon Evans is qualified to be athletic director at Georgia. Why hint around it? Just come right out and say, "If he doesn't hire Bobby Knight like I suggested, he's not qualified to be athletic director."
By the way, Furman Bisher is currently 90 years old so it makes sense that he wouldn't find any objection to Bobby Knight turning 69 before the start of next season.
How old is Bisher? His landmark interview of Shoeless Joe Jackson took place 16 years before Bobby Knight became the head coach at Army.

Update: As LadyQ points out on a hoops message board. It would probably help Bisher to know that his beloved Georgia Tech used the same search firm to hire Paul Johnson.

Bobby Knight circus moves to Tuscaloosa
Apparently, Bobby Knight doesn't want the UGA job. He wants any job. Knight's latest move was apparently to have the same intermediary that contacted Furman Bisher of the AJC reach out to Paul Finebaum of the Mobile Press-Register. The article is almost a cut and paste in regards to Knight's interest in the Bama job.
He's interested. He doesn't want to interview. He just wants an offer, and he would accept. And he sees a huge opportunity at [insert school name here].
To be blunt about it, he's like a creepy older guy chasing women far too young for him with obvious self-esteem issues (See: UGA and Bama). All in hopes that they won't realize they can do better than him.
Auburn...you're next as it looks like Jeff Lebo is really beginning to feel the heat on The Plains.

Is it 1985 still? No? Then tell Bobby Knight to go away
Furman Bisher says Bobby Knight is interested in the UGA basketball coaching job. Bobby Knight is 68 years old. His antics would go over with local AAU coaches and recruits like a pregnant high jumper.Regardless of Trey Thompkins' comment, this would not be a good thing.
If you want to see what happens when you hire tired old legends who are way, way past their prime check out exhibits A and B....Lou Holtz* and Steve Spurrier at SC. Knight would give us three years tops, and leave us with what? No recruits and right back where we are now...looking for a coach.
The guy left his own son with nothing to work with. They were 16-14 last year, and they are 11-10 now. What do you think he'd leave us with? We aren't even family.
Over their last three seasons both Felton and Knight each coached 86 games, and each left their jobs before the end of the season. Their records were:
- 45-41 for Felton
48-38 for The General
It'll never happen. Although, I did like the line from "SAWB" who sent this to me, it is nice to "see Furman Bisher write about something other than golf and hating people under age 74."

Barnhart out at the AJC
Per Crane in our comments area, and now The total number of "applicants" to take the buyout, and the fact that all "applications" were accepted are also confirmed. This comes from an internal AJC memo leaked/distributed to Poynter Online.
HometownHeadlines.com has published most of the names of those accepting the buyout. The cuts run across business, sports, travel, etc. Another source confirmed that Barnhart and Bisher were on the list of those leaving the publication.

Bisher reportedly told the human resources staff, "And don't even think about offering me any of that new fangled Union money." Ok, that part isn't totally true (ht - Orson on the joke idea).
I have never understood the idea of offering voluntary buyouts. To me, it's a chicken #$%^ way to do business. As an executive or business owner, you need to step up, stack rank your employees and then decide who stays and who goes.
You know who takes Voluntary Buyouts? People who can get jobs elsewhere and old folks. Yes, it's a nice way to remove expensive old staff without facing wrongful termination lawsuits. But is the risk of losing top talent worth it?
I sincerely respect the work guys like Chip Towers and Mike Knobler do, but Tony Barnhart is the crown jewel of the sports section. That's why a college football fan in Michigan would even know or care about his departure.
To give you a sense of the AJC's business model problems, here's a sample sales call to me from them
AJC: Would you like to subscribe to the AJC?Terrence Moore didn't take a buyout. Lucky us.
Me: Why would I do that? I get it for free online.
AJC: You don't get the coupons online.
Me: Does that mean you're in the coupon selling business?
As someone suggested in the comments section, Barnhart will land on his feet. If we end up with an SEC Network, he would make an excellent flagship employee.

Reasons Furman Bisher Blows
Apparently, the Birmingham News ran an article a few weeks back about the infamous Saturday Evening Post article in the early 1960s that accused Bear Bryant and Wally Butts of fixing an Alabama vs. Georgia game.
Bryant and Butts were both vindicated in the libel law suits following the story, and the resulting back lash and legal payments bankrupted the paper. The suits are still studied in Law and Journalism School for the ground breaking decision regarding libel in regards to "public officials" vs. "public figures."
The story revolved around a phone conversation between Butts and Bryant that was apparently over heard by a third party. That third person took notes of the conversation and accused a drunken Butts (serving as AD of UGA at the time) of giving up the Georgia play book to Bryant. The third person sold his story to The Post for $5,000.
In their rush to bring down UGA, Alabama and College Football, the Birmingham News says that magazine didn't bother to look at the notes from the phone conversation. It was a hastily assembled story that didn't hold up under investigation. And frankly, Bear Bryant didn't need Georgia's play book to obliterate Johnny Griffith's team.
I throw Bisher into this because he helped Frank Graham Jr. write the story.
Fall out from the story:

- The Saturday Evening Post went bankrupt Georgia and Alabama stopped playing every year to avoid the story. We moved to playing about twice every 8-10 years in the 60s, 70s and 80s.
- Bryant was so enraged by the incident that he came to hate Atlanta. If memory serves, his team packed a lunch when they came to Atlanta after that. He refused to spend a nickel in town.
- The scandal helped push Butts out as Athletic Director.

Latest Chan Gailey Rumors (GT Coaching Search)
It looks like things are finally coming to a head on North Avenue. According to the AJC, Chan Gailey will meet with Tech's athletic director Dan Radakovich Monday morning. I'm expecting an announcement by 10:00 am regarding the demise of the Chan Wagon.
Jeff Schultz piles on at the last minute saying it's time to move forward with a new coach. Furman Bisher, a tech man(sic) til the day he dies, sends out the call for alms in his column. The Sporting News is a little more balanced. They simply ask is Tech is better off now than before Gailey was hired.
Per ESPN's Mark Schlabach tonight on CSS Talking Football the candidates for the GT job are:
-- Skip Holtz - current East Carolina coach.
-- Will Muschamp - former UGA player. Current AU defensive coordinator
-- Terry Bowden - former AU head coach
-- Glen Mason - former Minnesota coach. UGA coach for 48 hours in mid-90s
-- Randy Edsall - current UConn head coach. Former GT defensive coordinator
Other names I've heard:
Paul Johnson - Current Navy coach. Former GSU coach
Bobby Johnson - Current Vandy Coach
Chris Hatcher - Current GSU coach. Former Valdosta coach
I have to laugh at most of those names. First off, I can't see GT going back to hire an East Carolina head coach after the Bill Lewis debacle. Plus, I can't see them hiring a former UGA player like Muschamp....much less one 32 or so years old.
Terry Bowden would be a great fit, but I wonder if they are too proud to take a guy that got fired at Auburn? The Glen Mason idea about knocked me off my chair. One thing is for sure, Tech would be able to run the ball with the Masonator. Although, he showcased a passion for Gailey Equilibrium (7 wins / year) before Gailey was even hired at GT . He averaged 6.4 wins/year at Minnesota while having the Music City Bowl renamed the Glen Mason invitational.
Edsall would make a sense culturally and experience wise. As the Georgia Tech defensive coordinator in 1998, they had a solid season. However, Edsall is a Syracuse alum, and the 'Cuse job should open within the next 24 hours.
Five years from now, Hatcher would be interesting. right now, he's another early 30s guy that may not have the seasoning.
The next few weeks will be interesting on this one.

In a recent Atlanta Journal article, Furman Bisher waxes on about the Georgia Tech AD search.
When I saw the headline, I half expected Bisher's recommended candidates to be Man-O-War, Bobby Jones and Warren Spahn.

I promise you that I've never read any article written by Bisher that didn't reference at least 3 of the following:
Bobby Dodd
Homer Rice
Bobby Jones
Horse Racing (this one has "pasture" in the lead)
Some long since dead horse, baseball player or golfer
I think Bisher's dream article involves a reference to Bobby Dodd having football practices at Georgia Tech open to the media while tying that into the Alydar vs. Affirmed races. If he could weave all of that into an article somehow trashing Bear Byrant's legacy at Alabama, he'd probably just stand up from his typewriter -- no computer for that old codger -- and retire.
