SEC picks up Liberty Bowl for 2006

The Liberty Bowl will be joining the SEC Bowl group (HT to FanBlogs.com). This is a good financial and geographic deal for the SEC. The Liberty Bowl has always been a solid bowl in a fun city.

If handled properly, it's an especially good deal for the SEC West, Tennessee and Kentucky. However, I was hoping for a better matchup than the Conference USA Champ.

A bowl game between Ole Miss and Southern Miss would be interesting if only because of the bad blood. But the matchups wouldn't seem to have much national appeal.

The types of matchups you might see one day:
Arkansas vs. Houston (old SWC rival meet again)
Arkansas vs. Memphis
Mississippi State vs. Memphis
Kentucky vs. Memphis
Ole Miss vs. Marshall
Alabama vs. UAB (if the SEC would allow it)
Kentucky vs. Southern Miss
South Carolina vs. East Carolina

If Louisville and TCU were still in CUSA and if Marshall's program wasn't heading down the tubes, this would have been a more interesting bowl tie-in. Right bowl. Wrong conference to tie the SEC into.

Hopefully, this bowl tie-in will never impact Georgia. ;-)

How's about a UTEP-Alabama matchup?

Memphis strip clubs look out!

Outstanding call.

Actually, what the SEC should be worried about is a potential upset.

They'll never allow the UAB matchup. And I'll die if it happens. My parents are both Bama fans and UAB alums.

As for RD's claims -- I work with Little XII honks, and all I can say is that conference is a navel-gazing joke. I can't wait to move back to SEC country, where men are men and women have bedunkadunks.

Who the F* cares? I don't watch these worthless exhibition games, anyway.

There's no DOUBT that the SEC will lose most of its games in the Liberty Bowl to Conference USA.

It has little to do with talent and everything to do with motivation.

The good SEC teams think they playing CUSA teams and other lower tier schools is beneath them. They show up to these half wit bowls and lose b/c they phone it in.

The SEC teams that will win in the Liberty Bowl will be 2nd or 3rd tier programs like MSU who will just be glad to play SOMEONE in a bowl.

I call it the Music City Bowl affect. The SEC lost almost every single Music City Bowl when playing the Big East b/c the Tier 2 Big East was more excited to be up there than the SEC team.

You see the same thing when Tennessee plays in the Peach Bowl and constantly loses.

So yes. I do expect CUSA to win a bunch of Liberty Bowls.

Newspaper Hack, I wasn't saying the Big XII was better, I was making a matter-of-fact statement. If it's a Florida-Georgia-Tennessee-LSU, they shouldn't have to worry, but that will never happen. One of that bunch will be a BCS team, and the rest will either be in the Cotton Bowl or some bowl in Florida.

Like Paul Westerdawg said, it's probably going to be a 6-5 team like a Vandy, South Carolina or one of the Mississippi schools who think they can just show up for a bowl game against a C-USA opponent and mail it in. A good mid-major can beat a mediocre BCS team.

Geez, I even linked your hurricane blog pics, and this is the thanks I get?

A couple of those can never happen, like Ole Miss or Miss St/Southern Miss, Tennessee or Vandy/Memphis. East Carolina/South Carolina.

In the contract, it says no rematches from the regular season, and no instate matchups.

PSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSST -- East Carolina and South Carolina are in different states.
