Georgia vs. Auburn Rewind

I just sat through the game on DVR. Brutal. Some things jumped out at me.

Linebacker Play:
I honestly try really hard not to "bash" players. I don't use this site to tell the world that a Georgia player "sucks." I've tried to keep a civil tone when I criticize players. And I'll try and maintain that here.

[Photos of Pope make me feel better. So I'm posting those instead of pics of guys who played poorly.]

What I will say is that some of my criticism aimed at Willie Martinez, could better be aimed at player execution at the linebacker position. Execution which is severely inhibited by injuries.

For instance, is Danny Verdun Wheeler injured? Because if he's not, he needs to take dramatically more minutes from Brandon Miller at the SLB position until Miller heals.

Miller was a complete non-factor in there. He has little lateral movement and he is just too slow in space. In fairness to him, what's a dude going to do? He's got a bad wheel. But it just begs the question..."Were our best 3 out there for enough minutes?"

[Photo: If I had my own cable access show, it would be called "Pope is Dope." We would just run highlights of him.]

But the more pressing is the issue at MLB. I like Tony Taylor. I respect him trying to play with a busted elbow. I want him to do well, but there is no way that he should've been playing that many snaps vs. Auburn. I didn't see a play where he wasn't in there.

Despite the constant gushing praise from Bob Davie, Taylor was out of position to make tackles, couldn't shed blockers and had to tackle with one arm which resulted in a parade of broken tackles. He simply couldn't wrap up well enough, and he was a step slow most of the night.

Do you remember the 1997 UGA vs. UT game in which Kirby Smart was trying to tackle Jamal Lewis with a bad shoulder? The result -- Lewis had 230+ yards rushing and Smart looked ridiculous. The first half was like that with Irons vs. Taylor. He is too banged up right now to be a factor. We've got to find a way to get some more speed at that position, and we've got to find a guy healthy enough to wrap up the tackle. At least until Taylor gets healthy. If that means moving Jackson back to MLB and playing Ellerbe at WLB, then so be it.

[Photo: Some guys show pics of kittens to sooth their nerves after a loss. Not me. I'm all about The Pope]

And BTW -- Josh Johnson runs a 4.8+ 40. So even if he comes back -- and he was suspended for a game at GMC recently so he's likely not coming back -- he's not going to upgrade the speed there. Just the physicality.

If the defense had tackled better and had taken better angles, we might be talking about a different game.

The Pass Interference Call on Pope:
The worst call in a long time. If you were at the game and wondering "was it that blatant a penalty?" Or "How did it look on TV?" The answer is "OH. MY. GOSH. WHAT A TERRIBLE CALL." Bob Davie and Ron Franklin were in shock over what an absurd flag.

[Photo: You don't tackle Jesus. And you don't call offensive pass interference on the Pope]

The 2 Point Conversion Play:
That ultimately falls on Richt, but based on watching the game again, and reading some comments in the paper. I'd say that the coach of the kicking team (is that Callaway?) bears the brunt of the blame. Even so, DJ should've called a Timeout to avoid the first delay. He just wasn't watching the clock.

Our WRs:
We have to find WRs that catch the ball without falling down. Mo Mass and Pope are the only guys who consistently catch the ball and keep moving after the catch. Very frustrating.

All of that said....we came inches away from winning this game. If the bomb to Nix that he fumbled forward on the 6 yard line in the first half had bounced 1 more foot forward, we get a touchback there. That was a huge break for them.

If the ball bounces another 2 feet further on the long run on 4th and 10, we win. We were so close in this game. Everything that's wrong with the team can be improved quickly. Everything except being banged up at LB.

AMEN!!! Pope is much better than Kittens.

You hit the nail on the head on every point except one. I got into a debate with someone about this yesterday which required us to dive into mirk and cluster that is the NCAA rule book. According to the rules, if an offensive player fumbles the ball on fourth down and the spot of the fumble is in between the goal lines, the ball is returned to the spot of the fumble, regardless of whether it goes out of bounds or out of the back of the end zone. It is a dumb rule in situations like last Saturday, but that is how it would have played out.

See, this is one of the main reasons I've resisted getting a DVR for so long. For every big Georgia win I'd record, burn to DVD and treasure for the rest of my life, there's also probably going to be a loss (like the one from this past weekend) that I'd end up Zaprudering and agonizing over for hours on end until it got to the point where my editor was calling me asking me why I hadn't come in to work yet. Either that or I'd record the most recent Victoria's Secret commercial and put Gisele on a continuous 24-hour loop. Regardless, it would not be a good idea.

Well we pretty much saw the same problems, although I couldn't bear to watch a replay of that, so mine memories are a little less refined since I'm going purely from what I could see sitting in 110.

One thing is for sure, I don't remember Miller having any sort of a game to talk about since probably ULM, which yes, he has been hurt, but if he's that far from ready, don't put him out there, especially for that many snaps.

The linebacker play was suspect at best but what ultimately led to the DAWGS demise were the turnovers and dropped passes (Pope and Massie excluded). The guys need to stop buttering their pre-game popcorn so that they can cath the ball. The punt return blunder absolutly killed our momentum espically when they scored on the next play. Then we finally get a break with a huge turnover in our territory only to hand right back over to them with six points to boot. Without those turnovers the infamous 4th and 10 play doesn't matter and I could sleep at night.

Again, a rational take on the disappointing, but not derailing loss. One of the biggest question marks I had coming into this season was at LB and then we lose two guys in the summer at the position that had me the most worried. Derrick White and Josh Johnson would at least add depth and create more competition among the corps so that everyone elevates their play at least a little if not more.

Of course, I will never argue with CMR's discipline decisions. I think he is fair and firm and the players all must know that there will be consequences for misbehavior.

Still, we are too thin a LB. Also, consider the help that would be provided our defense if Michael Grant and Jamar Chaney had been admitted. Again, I am not advocating that these two should or should not have been admitted, but these were two highly prized recruits on whom our staff spent considerable effort to sign. Which athletes did we miss as a result of pursuing these two? That is the opportunity cost that really is the issue.

I know all programs have similar issues and this is all part running an NCAA football program, but not having those 4 guys represents approximately 10% of the scholarships we have for defensive players.

I suppose we could group Tavares Kearney and the injured CJ Byrd in there too. Although, I do not know if either would have played this year.

The timing for all of this attrition on defense in one season has been unfortunate. Particularly coming the year after Pollack, Davis, Thurman and Van Gorder all go to the NFL. Nevertheless, all things considered, our defense has been great at times (when healthy) and at least pretty good when not playing at their peak.

If these year's edition of the Dawgs has 4 more wins in them, then this will be a most memorable year and we will have a beautiful banner to hang in Sanford Stadium that will be the only one of its kind throughout all of the 12 SEC stadiums for the 2005 season

Go Dawgs.

Regarding the 4th quarter phantom interference call, it is just one of a long line of calls in the last two-plus years. National TV, identifying a players number, and the recent replay rule haven't deterred the SEC crews from applying their influence on the outcome of close games. Franklin and Davie saw the same thing happen several times when they covered UGA-SC and all they can say is "I didn't see the interference / hold / block in the back / personal foul". Georgia people expect these phantom calls from SEC officiating crews and accept it as the way it will be as long as Bobby Gaston is in charge of officiating. Here are the statistics:
