UGA vs. Georgia State basketball this weekend

This Saturday, the Georgia Bulldogs play the Georgia State Panthers at Gwinnett Arena at 1:00 p.m. (Fox Sports South). Coming off the big win vs. the Yellow Jackets on Wednesday, this sets up as a trap game for the Dawgs.

It seems like we've lost two or three in a row to the Panthers in situations similar to this. (To those Techies lurking, don't laugh. You guys are scared to play them at all). However, this game looks to be a bit more harmless.

In Georgia State's last game, they faced the Kentucky Wildcats in the Georgia Dome. After going up 11-0 to start the game, the Panthers held on to a narrow 30-24 lead at the half. Unfortunately for the Panthers, they were outscored 49-16 in the second half and lost 73-46. In other words, Kentucky outscored the Panthers 73-35 after the first four minutes.

This isn't the same Panthers team that Lefty Driesell coached. These guys were beat by 30 earlier this year by George Mason (a team...not a guy). The Dawgs average more points, rebounds, and assists per game. However, the Panthers turnover the ball less frequently.

If the Dawgs come into this game motivated and play smart, they walk out a winner. If they come in asleep and don't protect the ball, they will lose like other Dawg teams before them.

The Hoops Program is *finally* building some sustainable momentum. After this game, we hit the road vs. Oregon State and Nevada before getting Clemson at home on Dec. 28th. Win three of the next four, and things get interesting. We would be looking at a legit chance to go 11-2 entering league play.

If you saw the Dawgs last year and haven't seen them this year yet, give them a chance vs. GSU or Clemson. The difference in athletic ability and shooting is night and day. The pain of watching last year's team struggle to score 40 a night is hopefully a distant memory from the past.

I'm not promising an NCAA Tourney team, but this crew is dramatically better than last year. Even SI.com is starting to notice.

That Nevada team is tough man.

If UGA loses a game on the trip, I'd bet the barn it would be to UN.

I'll say it right now. You guys are not a bad basketball team. I think you'll die by the 3 in a couple of games, but there are some solid wing players there.

I think you'll stage some upsets in the SEC this year. I had not seen you play until you whupped us, but you are definitely an improved b-ball team from last year.
