Georgia Tech Names Athletic Director

The Kyrgyzstan of college football has named Dan Radakovich as its new Athletic Director to replace the retiring Dave Braine.

Nathan has a solid take on things. And Scott gave his endorsement for the new guy before the announcement.

My favorite post on this topic came from GT blogger Dan at "What's the Good Word?" who proposed the following for Braine's retirement ceremony.
“In honor of the retirement of the venerable Dave Braine as Georgia Tech Athletic Director we are offering a family package on attendance for the retirement party. For just $40 dollars you will receive 4 tickets to the event, 4 cokes, 4 hot dogs, and a complimentary ‘Don’t Let the Door Hit Ya Where the Lord Split Ya’ t-shirt (distributed randomly in one of four completely different shades of gold.)
Personally, I'm going to miss Dave "TicketMaster" Braine.

All indications are that this is a good hire for Tech. A qualified guy from a BCS conference with experience at winning programs. A much more qualified guy than Bill Curry. And a guy who's name I'll rarely spell properly.

They did well. As for Chan Gailey, you can pretty much put a stopwatch on his tenure at Tech from here on out. There is almost no way he serves out his five years.

If I hear the phrase "Tech Man" one more time today, I might end up at the top of a bell tower with a high powered rifle.

A man named Radokovich fits that program well, should only further their longstanding claim on every northeastern TE with a eastern European name, like Guadagni, Foschi, and Andrzejewski.

Our basketball ball team in 2007 will have Paco Diaw, Alade Aminu, Muhammed Faye and Gani Lawal on the roster.

Sounds a lot like my Linear Algebra class, quite frankly. Nobody beats Tech in the names department, we would be 8 time defending national champs if that was an NCAA sport.

Seriously. "Tech" men? Bobby Dodd played at Tennessee, and Bobby Cremins was from South Carolina - I think they both did just fine, unless you consider their names are on both our major sports venues. The only important figure in Tech athletics history that was a "Tech man" was Kim King and everybody seems to think we gotta have that every time. Tech fans can be the stupidest and most insular people on the face of the planet sometimes.

It's not just at Tech that people are insular. Most folks forget by now, but there was a decent bit of controversy when UGA hired a *gasp* Auburn man as their coach. Guy by the name of Dooley.

Dan in his Tower

Seriously, people seem to forget that we hired Homer Rice from UNC and he forged the best run of overall athletic success for GT in it's history. Of course, he's a not a "Tech Man" so that doesn't count.

"I have no idea whether Georgia Tech made a good hire here, but, whether it pans out or not, Georgia Tech certainly made this hire for the right reasons."

Nail on the head right there Kyle. This guy could be an absolute bust, but based on the data offered and the criteria provided the odds are against that. Doesn't mean it won't still happen, or that you guys won't be actively rooting for it, but at least the decision wasn't based on some mis-placed sense of nostalgia.

What are the odds Gailey's gonish? Oh, let's say...7-5 sounds about right.

Dan's rant is one for the ages. (warning profanity in abundance).
