Mailbag: Why Didn't You Bust on Gailey?

Pull my finger

I was asked via email...
"I must admit, I am a little surprised to not see any GSB comments on the tradeschool's newest attempt to motivate the Chaninator to improve performance against the Dawgs. I mean, come on, $5,000 bonus for a win against us.... that is high quality stuff, ripe for poking fun at." - Blake
Blake, you make a helluva a good point. Dawgnoxious took the words out of my mouth when he told Orson Swindle:
"Since Tech is unlikely to have to pay out the bonus, they may as well make it a bajillion dollars payable in leprechaun gold, followed by unicorn rides."
Besides, it was tough to top Orson Swindle's commentary and Dawgnoxious' comments on this one. So I didn't get to it. Mea culpa.

From reading The Hive it looks like there were three main complaints from Techies about the contract:
    A. It wasn't enough of an incentive.
    B. ALL of their paycheck should be designed to generate a win over Georgia. It's not something "extra" that you get a bonus for.
    C. The bonus elevates Georgia over GT to wit several GT fans commented that losing to UGA was doing most of the real elevating.
I'm almost certain that there is no team specific bonus in Mark Richt's contract. His incentives are tied to winning the SEC East, the SEC Championship, BCS Births, National Championship Titles and graduation rates. You know...important things. Paying him extra to beat Tech would be like paying extra to remember to come to the games.

Personally, I like the current incentive plan our coaches have regarding games with GTU, which can be simply stated in this fashion:

Beat those miserable, cheating, whining, righteously hypocritical SOBs at least 70% of the time, or we'll fire your asses. Lose 3 in a row and find a new job, guaranteed. You want extra for beating those pencil necks? It's not anything special when UGA wins that game. It's only special, and in a very bad way, when we lose. Part of your job description is to regularly, routinely, and rigorously beat them like rented mules. You dont get extra for showing up at the J-O-B. Be prepared to hit the road if you fail in this non-negotiable area of your responsibilities.
