Wrestler Rick Steiner Up for Re-election to GA County BOE

The Atlanta Journal had an article late last week mentioning that Rick Steiner, the Dawg Faced Gremlin, will be running for re-election to his seat on the Cherokee County [Georgia] Board of Education.

Steiner was appointed to the post in November 2005. The folks at Can't Stop the Bleeding had the original story links from the AJC. Steiner is actually fairly qualified for the job given he's got an undergrad degree in education from the University of Michigan and three or four kids scheduled to pass through that school system. The AJC's old link from the first story is no longer active, but here are some highlights:
Without so much as a body slam, real estate agent and former professional wrestler Rick Steiner became Cherokee County’s newest school board member.

The board voted 4-2 on Nov. 10 to appoint Steiner to the seat vacated by Fred Larsen in September. Steiner will stay in the post until the end of 2006, when the seat is up for re-election.

Steiner, 44, said he has quit wrestling and works for Keller Williams Realty in Woodstock. He spoke to the board before the vote.

“Last time I was in front of a microphone five years ago, I was hollering and screaming and ranting and raving. This is a lot more terrifying,” he said.

Steiner praised the district’s anti-bullying program and said he would encourage the district to use retired teachers as volunteer tutors. He wants to provide more learning opportunities for teachers and improve technology use in the schools. On the issue of growth, Steiner said more pressure should be put on land developers to donate sites to the school system. He also emphasized his experience as a teacher, fund-raiser and businessman.
Good for Rick. He apparently got frustrated with the school system, and he is trying to make it work better. Story has sort of a different vibe than the weird Volkoff story from yesterday. The payoff from the Can't Stop the Bleeding blog article:
"While I’m not questioning Steiner’s integrity, I am hopeful that nepotism doesn’t result in Big Poppa Pump being hired as a P.E. teacher."
Give his brother Scott his due...he knows how to pick a valet.

Hard to believe the guy that I watched on live television accidentally break Buff Bagwell's neck (one of the scariest things I've ever seen live BTW) is now on the Georgia BOE.

Rick always seemed like a good guy. So good on him.

anon - i had to delete that one. I try and not post stuff that teeters on slander. I think what you were describing was more a function of a broken down old man's body not working properly anymore.

Well, I understand why youd remove it, being the owner or moderator of the site.
However, you will never convince me that what I saw was a simple body breakdown.
As a HUGE wrestling fan while growing up, I know what this guy used to look like (along with Luger). And I also know theres a little more than an aging body breaking down there.
While my comments might have sounded mean spirited, I really do wish him the best of luck. But I'll stick with my opinion that he can do the kids more good by going into schools and speaking about the effects of drug use. Some before and after shots of not only himself, but his wrestling buddies would drive the point home pretty good in my opinion.

I mean c'mon...only five or six short years ago, the guy was in pretty darn good shape and wrestling in the big promotions. He could have sat on his butt for the last five yrs eating little debbie swiss rolls and not deteriorate THAT badly if it werent for the effects of other things.

Thats all I have to say. If I post here again, I will not accuse or even imply anything like that again. Thanks.

Don't sweat it.

I don't think it's a secret that most of the wrestling community used Roids. I just wasn't sure if you were talking about that or some other sort of drug. That's why I deleted it. Well that and I'm pretty sure he read it. lol.

Please don't hestiate to post again. I rarely delete (unless a post has the F-bomb or its equivalents, G-D, or I think I'm going to get sued).
