Football and Basketball Articles to Start Your Day

SEC Players to Watch:
The Mobile Register looked at the five players who could have a dramatic impact on which two teams ultimately navigate the road to Atlanta for the SEC Championship Game. They put Georgia's own Matt Stafford on the list.

My Top 5 would be (in no particular order): Matt Stafford, Erik Ainge, LSU's QB (whoever it is), John Hevesy and Steve Addazio. Hevesy and Addazio are Florida's co-offensive line coaches. They have to replace 4 of their starting OL. And their OL was wretched last year. (ht - JimFromDuluth on DawgRun)

Recruiting Discussion
Kyle at Dawgsports.com takes my post about NFL Talent producing states to the next level. He breaks it down on a per capita basis and examines which states produce the most NFL players per citizen.

Scheduling Strategy
Rivals.com recently published an editorial about athletic directors looking for the right mix non-conference foes each year. The article appears on Yahoo Sports site, but it originally ran on Rivals.com. The article talks about Cal's A-B-C theory in which they try to schedule an A list team from a BCS Conference, a B list team from CUSA or the Mountain West and a C list team from the MAC. The article doesnt mention it, but they also like to throw a D list team in there too like Sacramento State.

As I've said numerous times, I like Damon's approach for us. Quality BCS team like Colorado/Clemson/Louisville/ASU, whipping boy BCS team like Georgia Tech, CUSA team and then a directional dreg like WKU, Ark State or Utah State. Although, it wouldn't hurt my feelings to play a Michigan, Penn State or Notre Dame type game once a decade or so. Something epic. (Ht - JimFromDuluth)

Basketball News
USAToday looks at the Dawgs. They seem to believe that the season all comes down to Takais Brown and the health of guys like Woodbury, Johnson and Bliss. I see us being better next year, but if we made the NCAA Tourney I'd be shocked off my rocker. (Ht - DaugMan on UGAsports.com hoops board)

I'd prefer we just go out and play good teams every week. There's a lot of clamoring for playoffs in college football but I bet a lot of those playoff supporters would be silenced if programs started worrying more about scheduling good games each and every week than they do about scheduling enough easy teams to give them a shot at the national title or to pad a team's record. I'd rather see us go 8-3 playing 11 hard teams than see us go 11-0 playing 4 tough teams, 3 mediocre ones, and 4 cream puffs.

Of course the biggest scheduling question on my mind is what on earth are we doing playing a IAA school in our season opener? I can kind of understand GA Southern since some folks think they're an in-state rival, but Western Kentucky? That's pathetic and we as Georgia fans should be ashamed.
