Mascot News: Before Uga. Before Mike and Before Butch...there was Mr. Angel?

As this is the 50th year celebration of the Uga family of mascots, the Red and Black's Sam Steinberg put together a great look back at UGA's mascot during the World War II years.

Mr. Angel, as he was known, predates all other known UGA mascots (except for the goat our guys ate after the first loss to Auburn). He came before all six Ugas, Mike and Butch. However, he isn't listed as an offical mascot in the media guide.

The Red and Black combined photos from the Dog's owner with old photos from the Student yearbook to validate Mr. Angel's former owner's claims of "mascotness."

Pretty cool article.

Note: If I were the UGA AD's office, I wouldn't have commented on this story to the reporter either. There's not much you can say that wouldn't be uncomfortable given their lack of knowledge of the topic. Especially with Dan Magill not being up to speed on Mr. Angel. It'll be interesting to see if future Media Guides reflect his presence.

Not really related to anything, but I had to share what happened while running this AM. My MP3 was playing Baba O'Reilly (Teenage Wasteland). I fell into a vision of the team running out to the intro to the song. Behind them came CMR. A spotlight/strobe came down and he started doing karate moves.

Hey, Paul. What's up with Georgia not having a live mascot until the mid 40's? Hell, State had Ptolemy and Bully I in the thirties.

J. Elmo...you may need to drink more fluids while you are running.

Nah, man, just part of the "runner's high."

I'm surprised all the poodle skirted ladies didn't have "Mr.Angel" dressed up like a poodle...a little bow on his head, some cologne...how degrading.

If I were Dan Mcgill, I wouldn't comment either, but only because the name "Mr. Angel" is so gay. Some history should be left in the closet.

Being from Europe I follow this debate with great interest. Had no clue how issues like these could be dealt with.
