Scrimmage Recaps

Image: Athens Banner-Herald

How can you practice for a spring, a summer, 1 week of fall and scrimmage for 2 hours and not have a least one of the four quarterbacks eliminate himself from the race? Who knows, but that's the situation the Dawgs are in.

Dawgbone.net has most of the articles you need to catch up on the scrimmage. Some highlights:
  • ABH Notebook - Gartrell is out for the year at WR, and Quintin Banks is hitting people like a rookie version of Blue. "You're my boy, Banks." Nah, it just doesn't have the same ring to it.

  • GB Blog - Best article on the QB race because it has the most quotes. However, reading into this thing is like reading tea leaves.

  • Macon Telegraph - Josh Kendall talks with Joe T's dad about being on the UGA coaching staff and having his son in the QB race.
Initially, I thought "the longer the race lingers the worse it is for JTIII to keep the job because the other guys learn more every day." But I've abandoned that logic. Splitting the snaps 4 ways just means it's bad for UGA all the way around because none of them are getting the snaps to learn much. Sounds like Richt is just going to bite the bullet this week and drop the race down to two kids. No matter how it looks.

I still feel Richt has a personal feeling for the top 2, as does Bobo and Calloway, and maybe all 3 agree on who that top to is. Problem with my theory is, they've done a damn good job of holding that company line of "All 4 are contending for the job, and Joe Tereshinski, with the most experience sits at the top of the chart."

I honestly expect Richt to bring in Rasheed Wallace to help conduct his interviews. "Both QBs played hard." Next question? "Both QBs played hard." A question about the D? "Both QBs played hard." How about the TBs? "Both QBs played hard."

Take this theory with a grain of salt, because what I know about coaching might not fill an average-sized thimble, but is it possible that Richt is pushing the perception that it's still a four-way race for QB in an effort to fake out, or at the very least keep from tipping his hand to, our early opponents this year? If we go the entire summer without some kind of public announcement of whom the starter's going to be, and each of the four gets appreciable playing time against WKU, then we could go into the South Carolina game with Spurrier still not being entirely sure whom he needs to be game-planning against. Again, this is just a theory, and I'm sure Spurrier is too smart a guy to stay faked out for long, but I'm all for keeping the cards close to the chest at this stage of the game.

Doug - I don't think that's it.

He's splitting the snaps too thin. We only ran 10 passing plays in the scrimmage per QB. That's not very many.

He wants to narrow it down. I don't think it's a head fake for the other team.

If anything, he's probably doing it this way so that:
1. the seniors feel like JT3 got every available shot.

2. the FR and recruits out there feel like Freshmen at UGA get every available shot.

3. if one of them goes out and wets the bed, he can play another one and spin it as "They were so close in Camp that I'm comfortable with the next guy playing." And not freak out the team.

I just think none of them have taken the job.

Or possibly Richt is planning a devastating 4-QB offensive attack?

I like that last theory.

Maybe we want all (3) to keep those ugly thoughts of transferring out of their heads, so we keep up the possibilities all season...

I think it's JT3 and Stafford. Richt probably goes with conventional wisdom, starts JT3 first 2 games and then sees how it all plays out. No matter how quickly Stafford evolves (assuming he's the #2) no way he starts in Columbia, Just South of Hades Carolina. Absolutely agree that snaps in practice are at a premium right now.

I betcha Richt was just about ready to pull the plug on Blake Barnes before Saturday's scrimmage and winnow the race down to 3, when Barnes went and had the best day of all of them. Then he couldn't justify doing it, and we're back where we started with a 4-man race.

On that note, I bet Cox was one more G-Day-like blowup away from exiting the competition, but apparently Saturday was not nearly so brutal.

It's almost like a reality TV show, where mysteriously, the producers decided not to vote anyone off this week, with the promise that they'll make up for it by voting off two next time.

We'll tune back in and see.

While Cox had those interceptions he was also the only QB that could move the ball at GDay. For my money the QB race should be a 2 man race between Cox and Stafford. May the best man win. The other 2 are fighting for 3rd and shouldnt take snaps away from the real contenders. In no way should a guy start a game based on fan favoritism. Should Gabe Gault start just because he is well liked or older? Hell no! In the end the team will respect coach the most when he puts the best player in, at any posistion. PWD is right, show to the team that he gave JTIII a shot then move on, they will see that he isnt the best guy for the job in the end.

82,
While I don't disagree with you that Cox deserves a good look, I'm not quite so quick to dismiss JT3 and what he brings to the table. His sentimental appeal aside (which I agree matters next to nothing in the final analysis), he knows the offense best and has at least started in a big-pressure game before. With all that said, he still seems to be a serviceable QB for us at best, and I don't think he'll wind up being the long-term option this season. Nevertheless, Columbia is the 2nd game of the year, and he may be our best bet at that point.

If Richt's going to narrow the race down to 2, these are the combinations I think he'll go with, in order of likelihood:
1.) JT3 and Stafford
2.) JT3 and Cox
3.) Cox and Stafford

The guy I just can't see fitting in anywhere is Barnes, although it seems he has strung together a few good practices and a good scrimmage Saturday, so perhaps we still shouldn't rule him out.

I'd be interested to hear from others what their predicted pairings will be when Richt narrows the race down to 2.
