The End of Michael Adams?

Yesterday (September 13, 2006) Erroll B. Davis was sworn in as Chancellor of the University System of Georgia. Davis is a former executive with Alliant Energy in Wisconsin. Our early prediction is that he will eschew the typical middling pointy-headed, beard-stroking, pompous pontificating of career academics in favor of a businessman's rational thought and results-driven analysis.

Why do we think so? That same day, the Board of Regents agreed to allow Chancellor Davis to create a new presidential performance review process for member institutions. Nothing like getting off to a lightning fast start.

"The new process, based on a so-called 360-degree performance review, will solicit feedback about the president from a variety of people - primarily from the president's home university - but also could include legislators, system office personnel, other system presidents, alumni and foundation members...The review involves collecting feedback about an employee, through interviews or questionnaires, from sources including co-workers, people in other departments, people who report directly to the employee and people outside the organization who regularly interact with the employee. [emphasis added]"

Granted, it may be naive to expect a candid assessment from administrators who are annointed by Adams in exchange for blood oath of loyalty. And you can't get on the new Foundation without the same blood oath. But here's hoping Chancellor Davis has his bullshit filter screwed on tight.

Having never met a publicly-professing Michael Adams supporter, we have assumed the only people who thought Michael Adams was doing a good job for the University of Georgia were the previous chancellors and the "esteemed" members of the Board of Regents. One of whom, a sometime pugilist, chaired the search committee for Adams.

I am not a crook, although Deloitte & Touch disagree.

If the Chancellor selects a UGA employee at random, Adams should hope Davis picks a wealthy tee-totaling feminist high-school graduate who is bad at math and hates football.

I may not be the richest person in the world, but as an alumnus of the University of Georgia, I have not donated money to the university since 2002 and will continue to withhold my support until MR. Adams is removed from his current job. Every alumni who is disgusted with Adams should stop giving money to the university. The new chancellor will get the picture in short order once the donations go down.

Get rid of Adams... STOP donating money to UGA!

Thanks for the update. I hope that this leads to as unbiased an evaluation as one could hope for, but after all I've seen over the last few years, I have little hope.

As part of a new PR initiative, meant to bolster his standing as these new review procedures are implemented, the Beloved Leader is going to announce next week that he's "bringing sexy back."

(editor's note: the thought of Mike Adams trying to dance in a provocative way just made me hurl. While I enjoy recreational vomiting as much as anyone outside the modeling industry, I may have gone too far this time. My apologies to anyone who was similarly affected)

I believe the picture in this post was taken at one of the "Open Mic with Mike" nights at UGA...Too bad I didnt hear about this monthly or bi-monthly gathering until after I graduated. I would have loved to line up every one of his transgressions while at UGA and ask him about each. It would also be fun to ask him if he thinks it's hypocritical to "crack down" on Gameday drinking when he himself was kicked out of Reynolds Plantation on one occasion for disruptive behavior associated with his drunkenness.

The inclusion of legislators I think is going to play more of a factor than the inclusion of alumni. They're the ones who have some oversight of the selection process, so their input is going to be crucial.

I think the entire 360 thing provides hope that the chancellor will finally listen to feedback on Adams.

However, the fact of the matter is that Don Leebern is one of the largest contributors politically in this state. He is on the Board of Regents without a college degree. His status on the BOR has been renewed by Governors on both sides of the aisle b/c of his political/financial power.

He wants Adams; therefore, we're going to continue to have Adams until Leebern is done with him. It's just that simple.

So the feedback process is nice, but it falls under the heading of so what? Or "I'll believe it when I see it."

How much feedback does a fella really need? You know. Beyond Votes of No Confidence from the Faculty and The Foundation. Beyond Audits that prove financial missteps and inappropriate handling of cash. Beyond slower than promised giving.

The feedback has been there. If someone wanted to hear it, it would've been heard already.

What's to talk about? We're playing a jobber. We're going to win, but it won't be as impressive as we would all like b/c it rarely is.

When Vince Dooley had narrowed the list down to 2 coaches and Harrick Senior was not on the list, Michael F. Adam$ forced Vince to put Harrick back on the list and then insisted that he be hired because while Adam$ was the Vice President of Urban Affairs at Pepperdine, a school of about 1,200 students, Harrick coached at Pepperdine. Vince had told us in public that he had questions about the past of Harrick including especially at UCLA and the money issues there which were decided to have been inappropriate.

When Vincent J. Dooley told Harrick Senior that Vince would not go around the Admissions Department for Tony Elasco Cole, citing his past behavior Vince told us in the press, president Michael F. Adam$ gave Tony Cole a Presidential Admit.

When Harrick Senior came to Vince and asked Vince to go around the State Nepotism Policy for his son Harrick Junior, Vince again told Harrick Senior no, and again Harrick went around Vince and to Adam$ to get Adam$ to hire him too.

Vince was fired for this by Adam$.

See if you can be clear about that.

Tony Cole was not denied by the Admissions Office until the Admissions Office consulted the President's Office. The President's Office told Admissions to do what they thought was right (even if it meant denial) and then turned around and overrode Admissions' decision. The President's Office has a habit of doing that sort of thing when I worked for Admissions. They would instruct Admissions to follow proper procedure and leave it up to the Preident's Office to override those decisions. I was never privvy to the reasoning behind doing things that way but if I had to guess, I would guess that it lets the University only make exceptions for those with connections.

A similar incident occurred the first year Admissions asked for a commitment deposit. The President's Office instructed Admissions to be absolutely ruthless with those that mailed a deposit after the postmark deadline, even by a day. Then the Provost went behind Admissions' back and forgave a lot of those late deposits but not all of them. Just the people with connections.

There's a long running joke in Admissions that if you you had to ask who to talk to when appealing an admissions decision, it wasn't getting appealed. Admissions is the bad cop and the Presiden't Office is the good cop. You had better get to know the good cop if you're a borderline student.
