Velasco to Center and More on Callaway

Dean Legge's Chick-Fil-A Bowl Notes calls this tidbit out:
ANOTHER LINE MOVE: Junior guard Fernando Velasco will back up center Nick Jones in the bowl game and probably will move to center full-time next year, Richt said.

The move of Velasco and freshman guard Chris Davis to center is bad news for the Ian Smith. The redshirt freshman has been suspended indefinitely after two alcohol-related arrests this year.
Speaking of offensive linemen, Josh Kendall has the latest on the UAB coaching search and Neil Callaway. The Birmingham News says that Jimbo Fisher was the first choice of the search committee, but they can't afford Fisher. So they've moved on to Callaway. Given that Tyrone Nix, South Carolina's defensive coordinator, has pulled his name out of the search...all eyes are on Callaway.

it's not that uab can't afford fisher -- they're paying their b-ball coach almost as much as they would've been paying fisher. it's just that the board of trustees (by which i mean paul bryant jr) can't stand the thought of uab having a good coach, since they didn't want uab to have a football prog. to begin with. and it would look really bad if uab were to get a coach (not to mention a really good one) before bama manages to hire one. crappy situation, and it sucks that uab has to be the redheaded stepchild in every discussion of athletics in the univ. of ala. system, but that's apparently how bryant and the board want it.

Bryant doesn't want UAB to have Fisher because Bama is courting Saban who will then hire Fisher from LSU to be Bama's OC next year. Oh yeah, and there was a guy on the grassy knoll that November in Dallas.
