Calvin Johnson Declares for Draft

Not sure who Taylor Bennett will throw into triple coverage to next year, but Calvin Johnson has declared for the draft. Best of luck to what seems to be one of the real nice guys in college football. It's a shame that the Falcons, who pick at #10, won't be able to select him. He's a sure fire Top 3-5 pick.

Best line on the announcement came via email to me...."Calvin declared after hearing that Paul Oliver was coming back."

It has to be obvious which team is going to take CJ, as well: Hello, DETROIT!

So, who becomes the best WR in Georgia Div 1-A now? Mo Mass? James Johnson? Sean "Part 2" Bailey?

Re: The Falcons won't be able to draft him at #10 -

There has been some rumblings in the assorted press that the Falcons would do well to pull another 2001 Draft and send the #10, Schaub, and perhaps a 3rd rounder to the Raiders for the ability to sign CJ. While it would be a high price to pay, it makes *SOME* sense.

That said, I'd rather spend the #10 on a massive, road-grader OL, and re-tool the offensive line away from the light, zone-blocking scheme put in by Alex Gibbs, and into a bigger protection package like what Philly uses...

The Falcons have enough receivers who can get completely shut down in big games. I personally think Oakland takes a much-needed QB and Detroit is too gunshy to draft another early round WR. I think the last spot Johnson will possibly go is Tampa but if I were betting, I'd bet he ends up in Cleveland.

My favorite quote:
""If he'd have been my son," Gailey said, "I would have advised him to go.""

If he were your son, Gailey, would you really have advised him to go to Tech in the first place?

Yes, but three years in he would have told him to jump to Miami.

What a coincidence! ...yet another brilliant Tech 'scholar' who only went to the NATS to get that great education is leaving early! Surely not...

My favorite quote so far: "Calvin tried to announce his decision to enter the NFL Draft earlier, but Paul Oliver knocked the mic away."
