off topic: iPOD advice?

So I'm the last dude in my demographic* to not own an iPOD. I'm going to pick one up in the next day or two. I'm traveling quite a bit for work lately, and I want to be able to watch TV or movies on the plane. As well as listen to my large music collection whenever.

I'm guessing that I'll likely be getting the 60 or 80 gigabyte video iPOD. Any suggestions on attachments to avoid / pick up? Any advice?

Thanks.

Honestly? Wait a while if you can for video. If you still really want a music player at least, then maybe get a cheaper Nano.

The reason I say wait for video is the upcoming release of the I-phone is introducing very sexy/nice new technology for video viewing that will almost certainly be implemented in a future Ipod model just after the Iphone's release. That said, I haven't personally watched video on the current Ipod w/video, so maybe it's just fine the way it is...

I think you may find you'll want two ipods. That would be ideal. I just have a nano, which is awesome because it fits in my pocket. But, it's only 4GB. Basically it would be nice to have one of the bigger video ipods so I could fit my whole library on there for long car trips. Plus if you want video, the nano is out. Although I hear you can get video on the nano, but you have to install linux on it, which is a pain with the nano.

Go dawgs (I am in bama - so i use go dawgs now sort of the way Auburn fans use WAR EAGLE - sorta a all purpose "aloha"

Anyway - my wife got me 30 gig Ipod for Christmas. Love it - Bought the iTtip car charger/fm transmitter. I think it's around $50 - Best Buy. We travelled to New orleans this weekend and had seamless good tunes, and stayed charged the whole 5 hrs.

DO NOT get the i RoadTrip - it is cumbersome and you have to remove skins to plug ipon on this awkward cradle. The one I have is just a cigarette adapter, little fm box and wire into your ipod.

I just received an iPod Nano for Christmas and love it. You will be going a step above that but I would suggest getting the Griffin iTrip accessory for your iPod as well. It allows you to play your iPod through your car stereo via an FM signal. Make sure you get the one that charges your iPod through the cigarette lighter or a seperate charger that does that though because the iTrip drains your battery fairly quickly. I bought the charger after the fact but you can use it with the iTrip at the same time.

I would also suggest getting the Monster cable accessory that allows you to plug your iPod directly to your home stereo. I bought this after purchasing a Bose docking station that charges your iPod and plays the music as well. I wish I had not purchased the Bose system that was $300 now. I am going to leave that at the beach house for use on the dock.

My sis has high praise for the Griffin iTrip also. She's downloaded a bunch of episodes of "The Office" from the iTunes Store and listens to them when she goes on long car trips. Apparently they're funny even when you can't see what's going on.

If you're going to spend the money, do it right and get the new 80 gig. It has better battery life and a brighter screen to boot

video ipods will be superior to everything else until the new fullscreen ipods are out in the indeterminate future. i have a video ipod loaded with movies and it is great except that they tend to drain the battery pretty quickly. the resolution is pretty good however and there are many accessories that can charge your ipod on the go. i would get a itrip that also charges your ipod as well as something you can just plug into an outlet.

I have a 30 gig video iPOD. I have only got 1/3 to a 1/2 filled and have over one-thousand songs. Make sure you get a skin our shell before you even use it because the screen scratches easily. I also agree w/ the previous poster about the Griffen Road Trip. It's like 80 dollars and it lasted about six months before it broke.

Here is a link for good speck products skins:

Keep up the good work Paul! I read your blog everyday. GO DAWGS!

It all depends on your music -how much you have or plan to , umm, "obtain".

I'm of the "Go big or go home" iPod school of thought, so all that mini/nano stuff is no good for me- althoughnice & small & light, I have something like 28 gig of music as is, so those are out.

As far as the big boys, there's a 30 and an 80. My rational is that 30 costs you $250 and the 80 is $400, so you are getting another 50 gig for $150, which is kind of a no brainer if that is how your brain is wired.

80 gig iPod with video.

Definitely get a case to protect it - my personal favorite is the black leather INCASE one. And if you spend alot of time in your car (and by living in ATL you do pretty much be default) then you can get a iTrip adapter so you can listen to it through your car stereo (or any stereo). Reception sometimes struggles in and around major cities, but the farther you get out the better it is. The dock is a great accessory as well, for it hooks into your home stereo system so you can rock it at the house, and it charges the battery while it is in the dock. As far as the speakers that you can buy, the BOSE dock is the best one that I have heard.

Also, in my experience it is worth the $50 to purchase the extended warranty. Without it you're covered for 1 year; with it 2.

Lastly, I don't know if there is an Apple store in ATL yet, but the Apple store in SF gives a 6% discount if you can prove with ID that you work for the Federal, state, or local gov't - not sure if that is a local policy or a national one.

Enjoy man. You'll be hooked on crack and a member of the cult in no time.
