While you were at lunch

Some bloggy goodness.

Basketball headlines:
-- Feb. 26 Bracketology - ESPN.com
(We're still in that group of "last 4 out" alongside Georgia Tech, Drexel and SDSU. Those three and West Virginia, Kansas St., Syracuse and Xavier are the teams we most need to lose this week.)

-- Projected SEC Tourney Seedings - SECSports.com
(If the SEC Tourney were today, they have the seedings. UGA projected as a 4 seed right now vs. Arkansas in Round 1. We'd get MSU in Round 2. I pray for a draw that great.)

-- A Look at the SEC Tourney -- Ugasports.com Message Board
(One fan's look at how the SEC tourney would shake out if it began today. Pretty fair assessment.)

-- UK fan details Tubby's recruiting "failings" - CatsPause.com
(With any luck, we catch the Cats in free fall on Wednesday. However, given that we've maybe won 3 games ever in Rupp, and it's senior night. I'm not expecting great things)

-- AAU Programs and their dirty outstretched hands - Washington Post
(The Post completed a six month look into AAU basketball. Their descriptions of how the money flows into those programs is disturbing.)

Football related headlines:
-- SEC leads nation in football attendance - DawgsOnline
(Overall national attendance was up 1.7 million, and it wasn't just because of the 12th game)

-- Catching up with Albert Hollis II - GSB
(In case you missed this on Friday. We interviewed Hollis.)

Humor:
-- Separated at Birth - HeyJennySlater

I want Wednesday bad. Now let's see if Sundiata, Takais, and Billy can go get it for me.

Good to know Alabama's "off the board." Hello, NIT! Smells like, the Independence Bowl.

That was an interesting article about AAU basketball. I played AAU basketball just as it was becoming a “big deal” in the early/mid 1990’s. We lost to Jerry Stackhouse’s team 226-189. Stack had 2 windmill dunks and their 5’3” point guard dunked on our goal just to show he could do it. We used to joke that good high school basketball players would one day not play for their school and just play AAU year-round. Now, that scenario seems very, very likely. Much like club soccer in Europe, AAU basketball will probably be where good HS ball players go to play. HS basketball will still exist, but it will be an afterthought. In the next 10 years, at minimum, the best 3 players at each high school will not be playing for their high school team. Where the best kids go, the best coaches will follow.

On top of that, you don’t have to “pass to play” AAU ball. It’s rec league, so kids that are not academically eligible to play HS ball can play AAU ball all day. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing or a good thing. I think it’s just evolution of the game. Kids will still have to pass classes to get into college to play, so I don’t think corners would be cut there, but it does open up an interesting opportunity: kids that can’t make the grades, but have NBA talent. It’s possible that misguided kids could forget their grades, not play a minute of HS ball or college ball, and jump straight to the NBA.
