Georgia creeping back up the board in Vegas

Interesting:

Odds to win the 2014-2015 College Football FBS Championship (Teams in red have longer odds, teams in blue have shorter odds, and teams in black stayed the same)
Odds on 11/11/14         Current Odds
Alabama                                   4/1                    5/2
Oregon                                     4/1                    15/4
Florida State                             6/1                    6/1
Ohio State                                8/1                    6/1
TCU                                          6/1                    7/1
Baylor                                       16/1                  17/2
Mississippi State                       15/2                  17/2
Georgia                                    33/1                  25/1
Ole Miss                                   25/1                  33/1
UCLA                                        100/1                50/1
Arizona State                            25/1                  Off the Board
Nebraska                                  25/1                  Off the Board
Auburn                                      33/1                  Off the Board

Other interesting tidbit is Vegas doesn't think much of the human polls.

Cruisin'

I normally try to get a trip of some sort in during the off week if it falls right before the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. This year, the wife and I are cruising out of Jacksonville to the Bahamas.  I have a few things qued up for the next week, but posting will be light until Thursday or Friday.

Considering what I expect my bar tab to be, it might be light those days, too.

Tri4Mattie

Not sure if any of you have seen this, but a friend of the blog sent this to me. Jason Rogers, an Air Force vet turned triathlete from Waycross should complete his coast to coast triathlon sometime Thursday afternoon by heading into Fernandina Beach. He is raising awareness and $$ for Mattie's Mission, a non-profit founded to assist families of childhood cancer victims, named in honor of Mattie Goble. He left Seattle on August 24th and had biked, swam, and ran across the country.

From their Facebook page:
The Waycross-Ware County Chamber of Commerce is encouraging anyone who would like to be a part of the Welcome Home Celebration today to begin lining Plant Ave. around 4:15 at The Depot. They will continue down Memorial Drive and more celebrating will take place on US 1 South at Crosby Nissan and the other dealerships and end today at the entrance of the Okefenokee Swamp Park!
If you are in Waycross today, or want to support them further, check out the websites for more information on riding with Jason or supporting the group financially.

Quick round up

  • Clemson is down a running back and starting offensive lineman. None of those players were named Vic Beasley, so carry on with your panic.
  • South Carolina might be without their star running back, Mike Davis, for the Texas A&M game. Then again, he might not.
  • Mark Richt has lost control of Georgia Tech's recruits.
  • Tennessee is strategerizing around their young offensive line...by making sure the defense is getting rough with their tailbacks.
  • Patton Robinette becomes the Vandiest named starting QB in the country when he is named Vandy's starting QB this week.
  • I'm not surprised Auburn had a guy with a failed drug test. I'm surprised Auburn has a guy that got suspended three games for one. Must have been some Keith Richards level stuff going on.
Let's get it on.

Milwaukee

I headed to Milwaukee this weekend with Twitterless Brad to celebrate his birthday. Why Milwaukee? Glad you asked:
That and baseball, bratwurst, premium American brewed lagers, and a visit to the birth place of High Life.

Should be a good time.

Free Form Friday

Couple of things that caught my eye this morning:
  • Patrick Garbin's 'where is he now' piece on Sylvester Boler is an interesting read. I never saw Boler play, but my dad's barometer for great linebackers was always Bolo. My dad was convinced Boler would have been better than Jack Lambert had he stuck in football. Just a great story, to boot.
  • Hartman Fund Donation deadline is coming quickly. Feburary 15th if you are wondering.
  • Well, yeah....
  • Now I'm just dreaming, right?
  • Bernie is done with recruiting. Stay tuned. He promises to get in our kitchen tomorrow.

Happy Holidays!

Hope you get whatever you wished for. Me? I'd like a decent basketball team, solid o-line play, and fewer injuries.

Annnddd we're back

After a week on Royal Caribbean, I'm back and ready to take on some bees. Nothing against Royal Caribbean, but if you have cruising dollars, spend them on Carnival. I've sailed both multiple times, and Carnival's customer service and approach is better.  We had great service at dinner, but that is the only place the service, or desire to make sure we were being served, really shined.

Oh, Belize is fantastic. Really, really top notch experience zip lining in the rain forest. Didn't see/hear howler monkeys, which was a let down. Also, we spent a day snorkeling in Arricifes de Cozumel National Park with Hernan Bacelis Fuentes on the Alba. This isn't a paid advertisement, so if you are there look him up. He's as good as they get. We took the kids on their first snorkel and his divemaster stayed with three kids for an hour in the water. Good times.

Housekeeping and such

I'm headed out of the country for several days, so that is why posting has been light and will be non-existent after tomorrow for several days.  If we fall apart and lose to Kentucky, please don't burn the place down.

With that, remember that we have two Thursday games in next week's Fat Man Touchdown Open, which is the last week with a big slate of games. We are all Saturday games this week, so you have some time for this one. Also, I'll not be doing an SEC Blog Poll next week, because I'm not buying Internet just so drunk surf LOLCats in Belize do the poll.

Monday Morning Thoughts

  • Greg at Bulldog Illustrated busts out some pre-season video goodness, which I'm sure I'm gonna scam one of these nights and post here.
  • Bernie notes that Grantham has had one pass rusher in each season be The Man. He bets, along with everyone else, that Jordan Jenkins will be That Guy.
  • The spirit of T.Kyle King lives on at Dawg Sports (but they have to work on their tongue in cheek game).
  • Ryan at Gottasuportem has some need statistical stuff on the Dawgs from last year.
  • Mr. Sanchez gives his best Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde at Dawg Sports and Sports and Grits.
  • Quantifying #MACTION. It is real.
  • Stingtalk (I don't really need a reason, just a link; but it is awesome to watch them piss at each other).
  • Somebody thinks Clemson will be very, very good.
  • Florida is also casting about for a place kicker.
  • South Carolina, too.
  • Vandy unleashes the pass rush. That was one of the highlights of last year's defense.
  • Oh, and John Paul Manziel.

Monday Roundup

About to hit the road for ATL, but a few things caught my attention this weekend:
  • Blutarsky picks up on something that didn't make sense to me. Clemson is expected to be fairly closely rated with Georgia at the start of the season, yet Steele doesn't see the parts stacking up so closely. Which begs the question: Do people think Clemson will be better than the sum of its parts or will Georgia not be as good as the sum of its parts?
  • Little Jamie Franklin ain't Mark Richt.
  • DaugMan with a nice catch on Jarvis Hayes' work in New Jersey with the Nets' community outreach program.
  • The ACC media thinks a lot of Clemson.
  • Georgia Tech was picked to finish 4th in the Coastal. About what they did last year.
  • Tasty cupcake Mid-season OOC opponent North Texas is picked to finish 5th in the Western division of C-USA.
  • Invariably, someone at the AJC will find a way to connect PJ Hairston's decision making to Mark Richt.
  • Johnny Manziel getting kicked out of a University of Texas fraternity party isn't news. It is inevitable.
  • Atlanta is putting all its National Championship bid eggs in the 2018 new stadium nest basket.
Fall practice starts tomorrow, y'all. If you can't smell the fresh grass, Johnny Football probably has it at his place.

Quick SEC Roundup

A couple of nuggets for you:
  • Ole Miss has a player ineligible for last season. Since Ole Miss didn't know he was ineligible, he's sitting out six games this year, but Ole Miss won't have to vacate those games from last year. As the Clarion-Ledger points out, that didn't help Memphis basketball with Derrick Rose. I guess it helps to have Hugh Freeze as the coach instead of John Calipari.
  • LSU haz arrest charges filed. Leading rusher Jeremy Hill has been charged for a bar fight in Baton Rouge back in April. He's already on probation for doing teenager stuff with a much younger teenager. Les Miles is likely going to have to cut him loose, if the school doesn't do it for him.
  • Auburn cooking has been very good to Rodney Garner.
  • Blutarsky provided enough context on Mandel's list, which really just reads like a SEO hit troll list.
  • Y'all, buy Kyle King's book. It is the shortest thing he's written in some time.
  • So much for the theory that the SEC Media Days won't allow bloggers there because of the possibility of a 'circus.'
  • Three weeks in and I still can't get my head around this.
  • Something fun, though. Note that only one of Florida's picks is pre-1990.

NBA Finals

I don't follow the NBA much. I just don't get excited about pro basketball for a lot of reasons. However, because I am a sucker for pop-culture references, and I generally care about the larger world of
sports, I am paying a bit of attention to the Finals.

Last night I watched Game 6 with some very knowledgeable and devoted NBA fans. I now get the NBA. For too long, I have tried to view the NBA as the next level of college basketball, much like I do with the NFL, and to a lesser extend MLB.

I've been doing it wrong. So here is my theory:

NBA:WWE

Actually, it is more like WCW, but with a bit more amorphous idea of who is a heel. That is the only way I can view this game from now on. And it actually makes watching the NBA more fun. There might be more pure athleticism, a bit less showmanship, and less scripting in the NBA, but it is more entertainment than sport.

Now, if they will get Tony Schivane to be the lead announcer and move all the matches to Monday night....

A boy can dream, right?
