Old School Video: Archie Manning vs. UT

"The Mule Game" 1969 Tennessee at Ole Miss. One of the SEC's all-time legends destroys the Vols. Ole Miss entered the game 21 point underdogs, and they won 38-0. I'm linking to this because...well...it's the offseason. Plus, how many times have you had the chance to see 7 minutes of footage on Archie Manning? It's not exactly ground breaking, and it's certainly not his best work. But watching UT get blown out is always good times.

This is the game that made me an Archie Manning fan. I was an 8th grader who didnt really know much about college football history, and who hadnt fully formed an attachment to UGA yet.

I can still remember Vol linebacker Steve Kiner running his mouth in the papers the week before that game. Archie, as the leader of his team, kind of shrugged it off in a good natured way. I suppose it lit something up in him and his team, though, because a more complete woodshedding you will never see.

Archie was kind of Everybody's All American in an era when trash talking wasnt quite as tolerated (or even applauded) as it is today. I met him briefly before the 94 UGA-UT game in Athens (along with a young Eli Manning, who was tall, weighed about 100 pounds, and seemed to have about size 15 feet), and Archie was just as nice and gracious a person as any star struck former kid would ever hope to meet.

I think it was my dad that described him as a bigger than life "southern folk hero" with appeal well beyond Mississippi.

I love that kind of stuff. The Ole Miss announcer is quite good, too. It's kind of sad to think that the Ole Miss program peaked out almost 40 years ago...and has never returned.
