I've said numerous times that booking games with non-conference schools in border states is the best way for Spurrier to off set the limited in state talent pool and expand his recruiting footprint. Thus, the UNC and NC State series are a great fit for the Gamecocks.
I also like the unique 2-2-1 series with East Carolina that has 2 games at home, 2 in the fertile recruiting area of Charlotte and 1 at ECU. I think that it's a smart move by their AD. I'd crap a brick if Damon pulled this move at Georgia, but it does make sense for the Coots given their where they are as a program. Obviously...not all SC fans agree with me. Others just don't like dealing with Skip Holtz, ECU's head coach (as if he'll be there in five years).
I also can't poke fun at their Div I-AA games as it looks like UGA and many of our neighbors are going to book one Div I-AA game per year from now on. But you do have to hope they'll continue to step up and schedule aggressively post 2010. If their future schedules look more like the 2014 and less like 2010 (see chart above), they're not exactly reaching for the stars.
A great fit for them scheduling wise would be Georgia Tech. The two schools played each other eight times in the 70s while both were wandering the wilderness as independents, and they played four more times in the late 80s-early 90s before SEC expansion.
It'll be interesting to see how the schedules unfold for our SEC brethren.

Paul, It looks like what SC is doing is trolling the in-state Div 1-AA teams. Furman, Wofford and the Citadel are all SoCon teams in SC and of course, SC St is also in-state, but they are in a different conference. I wonder if the the legislation or trustees had anything to do with it since it looks like a rotation of those schools. Obviously, Furman has some history and is usually make the playoffs. Wofford had a brief run in the early 2000s. The Citadel usually stinks and I am not sure about SC St.
Playing Tech would probably be a good game for them as you mentioned, but since they have also started with UNC & NC St, why don't they do what they are doing with the teams above and add Duke & Wake and complete their set of NC schools also. Then they would play just about every team in the Carolinas (except App St- traditionally good).
The ECU stuff looks like Lou slurred, slobbered and spit out a request to throw Skip a bone. But I do like the 2-2-1 format that you commented on and playing at Panthers stadium is pretty cool.
I agree that Tech would make a good opponent for SCU. UNC is probably the ultimate for them as that is a serious border rivalry with the whole who is "Carolina" bit. Plus if I'm not mistaken South Carolina left the ACC because of the disagreements with the Heels and their Tobacco Road cohorts. They should play in basketball too. Winner gets the bigger claim on Bobby Cremins.
This is off topic, but do remember that Tech's AD Radkovich used to work at South Carolina. I'm almost positive that I remember him saying early on in Atlanta that he wanted Tech's football schedules to resemble South Carolina's.
That might be why Tech decided to drop a home and away series with Louisville. Though I think they have retained the prviously planned series with Alabama.
Those schedules are lame. If UNC football is the beacon of your OOC scheduling, this is another black mark against the SEC.
Where are the schools like Oklahoma, Texas, Ohio State? Or at least Tier B BCS schools like Boston College or UCLA. UNC is like scheduling Ole Miss out of conference.

They already have one of those. That's Clemson you are describing.
And UNC just hired Butch Davis. They'll be be better than any Ole Miss team we've seen lately by the time the two clash again in 2010.
Also - NCSU is apparently a better program than BC since they just lured the BC coach to that school.
Jasonc, that's exactly what SC is doing. Hyman said it right after he was hired--they're going to be scheduling one 1-AA team every year, and since they're basically giving away money to some team, they might as well keep it in state. And I really don't care--at this point my team needs some bowl wins any way we can get em.
