Moreno a Front Runner for SEC Freshman of the Year?

Knowshon Moreno (Image: Hipple)

With yesterday's announcement that Knowshon Moreno was named SEC Freshman of the Week for the second time this season, I think he moves into the front runner spot for overall SEC Freshman of the Year status.

His current stats include:
-- 619 yards rushing (88.4 yards/game) and 3 TDs
-- 15 receptions for 195 yards and 0 TDs

From skimming the latest SEC Stats, his chief competition for top SEC honors appears to be
Terry Grant (RB) from Alabama. Grant has 593 yards rushing with 6 TDs, and he has 12 receptions for 92 yards with no TDs via the air. The biggest difference in their numbers appears to be the fact that Moreno has been accelerating while Grant's numbers have slowed a bit since a very fast start.

With Thomas Brown still nicked up and Lumpkin likely out for the season, Moreno should get the ball in the end zone more often. That's the only hole in his resume so far.

Nationally:
The two backs are fourth and fifth nationally among freshman rushers behind some dude at Idaho that you've never heard of, LeSean McCoy at Pittsburgh and Harvey Unga at BYU. (Source: NCAA). Moreno and Grant are on better teams, and they will both have bigger stages to try and earn first team All-American honors among runners.

At other positions, Michael Crabtree (WR) at Texas Tech will win every overall national freshman of the year award. He already has 78 catches, 1244 yards and 17 TDs. As a point of comparison, all of those would be career records at Georgia, and he has roughly half the season left. Any award nationally that Crabtree doesn't win will go to Sam Bradford (QB) at Oklahoma.

It's great to see Knowshon break out. I am concerned about injuries. Can you post something about the RB's , who will be available next week and what might happen if ,god forbid, Knowshown got dinged up....worry worry worry...

Richt says Thomas Brown may be available. After that it's walkons and Fullbacks.

Do you think there is a need to pull the shirt of King? Why waste the season if you have something you can put in? I know the thought is that he will have four more years if he holds the redshirt,...but really? I mean if he is that good, he will likely leave as a junior...can he sustain the academics over the next few years?...I am thinking use him if you got him...

Obviously Caleb isnt as good or ready to go or he would have had the redshirt lifted earlier. Dont get your hopes up, pat.

Pat, it all depends. If he's been practicing on the Scout team for the past few weeks, then he doesn't know our offense. That's a pretty reasonable expectation.

Regardless, you don't pull the redshirt off him in Game 7 of a season that's clearly not going to result in a championship when you think Thomas Brown will be back by UF or Troy at the latest.

PS -- To the guy that said he's not good or he'd be playing. Did you see our RBs last year? Pretty underwhelming if you ask me. But we didn't pull the redshirt off Moreno, and he turned out ok.

Can someone confirm- Jason Johnson was injured early in the season and is out for the season, right?

I guess my question is..who de we have that can play? Why not try and WIN the games we have to set up better for next year? We still have 5 games and a bowl(fingers crossed) why not have the best personnel on the field.

If TB can play at full speed, GREAT. A broken collarbone seems pretty serious and I wouldn't want him to exacerbate that injury..

I just don't know what is better, RB's that are unknown or unplayed......

I would not count out Smelly from USC either. He has won SECFOW just as many times as Moreno. Not sure if he is hurt or just being pulled this week, but that might set him back.

Lets not forget that King is still over coming a broken leg from his senior year in high school.

per Ching, TB is definitely out for the UF game. Jason Johnson will play.

Hey Pat.
The best running back in the country couldn't save this team unless he plans on playing linebacker, safety, and corner as well.

Save the redshirt on king. UGA should've saved Stafford's RS last year.
