ESPN College Gameday for 2008?

Sun Devil Stadium

It's way too early to care, but if you were wondering....Georgia plays at Arizona State in 2008 on Sept. 20th. A look around the country using NationalChamps.net's future schedule page shows that our game should be one of the biggest games in the country that day.

LSU vs. Auburn and UT vs. Florida will also be Sept. 20th, but it's the Arizona State vs. Georgia game that will be televised by ABC. Those two big SEC games will probably end up on CBS as part of a double header. So, you have to imagine ESPN College Gameday will show up for yet another Georgia road game.

And yes...I'm going to go ahead and project our game in the desert at 8:00 pm EST because it's one of the biggest games ABC can show that week. The other games of note that day are Miami at Texas A&M, Oklahoma vs. Washington, and Nebraska vs. Virginia Tech. Our game vs. the Sun Devils looks more interesting than any of those.

Why do I think this is interesting?
When the game was scheduled, it looked like we had gone out and selected a mid-tier team from a BCS conference that would challenge us. Sort of the Pac-10's answer to the Gamecocks.

Well, the Sun Devils had to go and get all uppity and hire a quality coach. Now, both of our teams are ranked in the Top 10 and fighting for BCS births. If Georgia beats South Carolina on Sept. 6, 2008, both teams will likely roll into Tempe ranked in the Top 5-10. It could end up being the highest ranked non-conference, regular season game that we will have played since Clemson was relevant back in the '80s. Who knew it would be such a big game?

So there's that.

We now return to the 2007 season already in progress.

Does anyone know if there is a travel agency that is putting together a trip for Arizona State? I have taken advantage of that in the past for bowls and Starkville and it worked out great!

We're taking a HUGE group out there.

I can't wait for this trip and the Baton Rouge>NOLA>Beach>Jax trip

I'm also looking forward to the return trip out to Clorado. Hawkins has them playing decent football, and the weather should be awesome.

I have to applaud Damon for fan-friendly scheduling. These games are a helluva lot better than watching us tee off on UL-Monroe again.

I guess no one is looking at the fact that the schedule next year is insane. We play 8 teams that should be ranked when we play them. LSU, Auburn, Bama are hard enough, but throw in a top 10 Pac-10 team on the road and the usual East guantlet. Not to mention the way the games are strung out with 4 road games in a row. At least we get a bye week for Tenn. next year. Hopefully we will use it to slaugher the QBless Vols.

I wouldn't say no one is looking at how hard the '08 schedule is.

We've discussed it numerous times here.

I know this is absolutely ridiculous, but with Oregon's loss last night and the fact that this is a ridiculous season, I'm going to lay out my plan for a national championship:

1. Georgia wins out.
2. Tenn. loses to Kentucky.
3. Mizzou beats Kansas
4. Oklahoma beats Mizzou is B12 Championship.
5. Michigan beats Ohio State.
6. Georgia beats LSU in SEC Champ.
7. West Virginia loses to UCONN.

Georgia vs. Oklahoma in the BCS Title Game.

"So your saying theirs a chance!"

I said the same thing Sunday to IronChefTurducken.

dawg 05,
A few weeks ago, I would have said you were crazy, but with the way #2 teams keep dropping, I think there are just enough teams ahead of us that could get bitten for us to pull it off. I don't think it will happen, but this season- who knows?

RE: '08
While I do like that all those punks in the Pac10 and Big 10 can't say "you play a weak OOC schedule", if we tighten up our defense next year, we have a great shot at the SEC and possibly the MNC, but it will be hard to go thru undefeated, so we are going to need some breaks to make it, especially with this schedule.
I looked at the rest of the east briefly and Kentucky should be down (especially on offense), Tenn will depend on Crompton because they return an experienced OL and skill people and the defense should be good, Florida should be better, I think Vandy will be down and SC should be better.

"I guess no one is looking at the fact that the schedule next year is insane."

If by "insane" you mean "what a football school of our caliber should be scheduling," then yes our schedule is very very "insane." I hope more schools grow a pair and lose their sanity. I have this silly dream of having real 12 game schedules in college football. As it stands, it's somewhat rare for a school to play 3 real games in a row.

Does anyone know if ASU will be giving UGA any tickets for students? I'm a UGA grad student and I got my BBA from UGA in '05, so I'm able to get all away tickets that I want to. I really want to go to the ASU game, but I'm curious if there will be any tickets alloted to students? Is there any precedent we can look at for this situation?

You forgot Arizona State. USC hs to beat them too for us to have a chance. What if all those happen and except LSU wins out and oklahoma loses to "the man" against the pokes. The computers might make it a LSU vs UGA NC game.

I ment to add UT loses to LSU in SECC.

I am taking the whole family out to Tempe. We will hit the Grand Canyon either the week before or the week after.

This game is very exciting for the fanbase.

The '08 schedule looks daunting. Obviously the 4 game road trip before Tech is going to be tough, but none of those four has an off-week prior to playing us.

I think I am more concerned with playing in Columbia, going to Tempe and then coming back to face Bama.

If you guys want to read something interesting check out this "economics" study from THE Ohio State University.

Naturally it is about college football.

To Andrew:

The UGA Athletic Association allocates 10% of what they receive from the other team to student tickets. ASU has nothing to do with it.

My mom swore to me last night that we were going to the "big one." (I'm afraid to speak the actual words) I told her she was a crazy loon and had a good laugh, but now after reading this, I'm not so sure.
I'll admit I put in for tickets on my bowl request form...

I think Arizona State is losing a lot of starters from this year's team. Not saying they won't be a quality opponent, but I think they'll go through some growing pains in the beginning of the year.

ASU doesn't loose that much next year. I just looked at the depth Chart, and they are loosing 4 on Offense (1 TE and 3 OL) with a lot of upper classmen coming back next year. Same thing on Defense (1 DT, 1 LB, 1 S, and 1 CB) 4 senior starters. Sounds pretty similar to the Dawgs, with a slight edge to GA, hopefully we will be reloading while they are losing more impt people, but I have no idea who any of their players are.

My preseason ranking (if we win out and win a BCS bowl):

1. Florida
2. USC
3. Oklahoma
4. DAWGS
5. WVU (if Slaton / White are back)

LSU, UK, Auburn, SC, UT all lose key players which should ease that brutal schedule a bit. But in reality it doesnt matter who's coming back next year when you have to play the back-to-back-to-back games that we do. We will not go undefeated, but that doesnt rule out a National Title.

Some sick b@stard must have put together the 2008 schedule. I'm all for playing some interesting teams, but on the road to LSU, FL, KY and AU in 4 consecutive weeks is insane. This is in addition to road trips to Columbia and ASU.

The same people applauding this type of schedule will be same people calling for Richt's head next year when we go 9-3 or 8-4. If we go 10-2 it will be an amazing development. Our REAL MNC year is 2009 when we at least get those same teams at home.

I don't think it was coincidence that our beatdown of the Gay-turds came after an open week for us, and a tough road game for them, which is the reverse of what it was for much of the 90's and early 00's.

I'm going to the game and can't wait.

Being an ASU alum and Dawg season ticket holder for many years I take umbrage at comparing ASU to the Cocks....ASU has gone to the Rose Bowl before (has USC been to the Sugar ever in our lifetimes???)....I would liken them more to Clemson (no SEC team really fits them)....they show great promise and havent delivered in a big game in a while so you are leery of believing that this is "the" year. I am making reservations for the hotel and seeing about getting a "Dawg" special for fans coming in for the game...I will tell more later

So, when ASU comes to UGA to play in 2009, should they play The Devil Went Down to Georgia?
