Eason Staying Put

David Ching reports that Coach John Eason is staying in Athens after meeting with Florida A&M officials this week. It was widely thought that Eason was out of FAMU's price range, but Eason says money wasn't the issue. It sounds like Eason is licking his chops at the talent he will have to work with next year. So much so that he has turned down his alma mater. The Dawgs will miss Henderson, Bailey, Bryant and Gartrell next year but we will get A.J. Green (please make your grades) and Tavarres King on campus to add to a good group of returning receivers.

Plus, it might be difficult to leave UGA, where you have all the athletes, facilities, and money you could want, to go to FAMU, where they would be passing the hat at halftime to pay your salary. The only real advantage FAMU has on the Dawgs is in their marching band. No one can touch the Marching 100. But Eason would presumably be in the locker room when they perform. Way to think it through, coach.

"The only real advantage FAMU has on the Dawgs is in their marching band." I take offense to that! I think we (the Redcoats) are pretty dang good.

The Redcoats are good, but FAMU's band is awesome. There's a difference.

Plus, they'd never be wasting our time with Journey. Ugh.

Yes, the Redcoats are pretty dang good. However the Rattlers get down.

The Redcoats are good (see Sudler Trophy of 2000). The Marching 100, however, is a show band. They're as much entertainment as a the game is. While the Redcoats are great technically, I have never seen any Redcoat dance during a halftime performance. It's just a difference genre.

Much as I love the Redcoats (and as a former Redcoat), citing the Sudler Trophy doesn't really help here; FAMU won the Sudler in 1985. (A school can only win it once; while UGA was the first SEC school to win it, four other SEC bands [including Arkansas, oddly enough] have won it since. Don't get me wrong; it's a nice honor, but having UMass-Amherst win it two years before we did doesn't make it quite as special. ;) )

it's funny how winning makes people change their tune.

around mid october, a lot of people (mainly me) were saying that coach eason needed to go. i still think that he's awful, but it's hard to shake up a coaching staff after a season like the dawgs had.

i still think that eason has a propensity for turning receivers into head cases (terrance edwards actually had good hands before richt and eason showed up).

i still don't like the way we rotate our receivers. we still insist on rotating 7 or 8 receivers into a game. most nfl teams carry 5 receivers on the entire roster and the fifth receiver hardly ever touches the field. i still wish we'd settle on a four or five receiver rotation. and if it were up to me, bailey and mo mass would never come off the field.

Latest word out of Summerville is AJ's grades are good.
I was at the game where AJ made the one handed catch. Although it was a great catch it was a little bitter sweet for me. I wanted AJ to have a good but my brother is a coach for Gaffeny. So you can guess who I was pulling for. Alas Summerville won but got beat down by Byrnes in the State Championship game.
