Hoop Dawgs blown out by East Tennessee State

Felton's squad lost to East Tennessee 76-58 at the Hawaii tournament late last night. However, they aren't eliminated. All teams are guaranteed three games.

Sundiata Gaines, Billy Humphrey and Terrence Woodbury combined to go 7-29 from the field, and the team only hit 5 of its final 24 three pointers. We won't beat anyone shooting 28 total threes because we don't have enough shooters to do that.

It goes without saying that this game is an RPI killer. We need at least 20 total wins and 9 SEC wins to get firmly on the NCAA Tourney bubble. Probably 21 and 10 respectively to lock it. Every game we drop against ETSU; we have to get back in the SEC to get our total win count up.

For as good as the Wake game felt, this would be pretty much the opposite. I said after that game, that we couldn't have 18 first half turnovers and win in the SEC. We had 16 turnovers in the first half against ETSU. So I should amend my comments to read..."We can't have 16 first half turnovers and expect to win in the rough and tumble Atlantic Sun."

The team plays again today at 6:30 pm against Tulane.

As I said after the Wake game, that win would probably look a lot like the Okie St. win did to the football team. It provided a false sense of confidence based on beating a team who was decent in name only.

The big difference between the b-ball team and the football team, however, is that Coach Richt has shown the ability to right the ship. Unfortunately, we have never seen that out of Coach Felton.

I sincerely hope this is not the kind of game that leads to an 8-20 season and another overhaul, but I am not sure that I have enough confidence in Felton to believe that is not where we are heading.

I still think that an NCAA tourney apperance is more likely than an 8-20 season.

Although, I expect neither at this point.

Our historical "par" is within 2 games of either side of the bubble. I see no reason to think that's not exactly where we're headed again. Which usually means NIT.

Because it is Christmas, I have confined myself to the following comment on both hoops message boards, which I will now repeat here:

An awful, awful loss.

You guys keep drinking the Felton syrup and telling yourselves that he's still rebuilding the mess left by Harrick. You'll say to give him 2-3 more years so he can implement "his" system and so on and so forth, etc, etc.

Losses like this combined with the academic sh*tstorm under his watch only confirm my belief that Felton is not what most GA fans think he is - or hoped he would be.

Wake up people and face the facts. It's not like Dennis hasn't had time.

Georgia Basketball: 1 step forward, 2 steps back.

Yet I will always care. Ugh..

The sad part of it all is that Florida (in spite of their current record), Kentucky, and LSU will probably all have below-average years. Besides Vandy and Tennessee, this shouldn't be a banner year for the SEC.

We SHOULD be a tournament team even without Brown and Mercer. Six or seven of our guys have all been playing big minutes since they first got to UGA. Experience alone should make us one of the top six teams in the SEC. No excuses.

Losing to ETSU is simply unacceptable. You can't chalk it up as just a bad shooting night. Here are the heights of ETSU's starting five against us:

6'1"
6'1"
6'4"
6'6"
6'8"

Why did we shoot 28 3s against this team? WHY? Please, please, pound the ball down low against a team of midgets next time, Coach.

Anon 4:10. EXACTLY.

We were bigger than them. Why did we jack up 28 threes?

As for the dude talking about Felton Syrup. I have no idea who you are directing those comments towards.

Anyone who has read this blog for any length of time would tell you that I'm not a Felton sunshine pumper.

I just haven't thrown him totally under the bus.

There is absolutely no excuse for this. None.

I don't know how many of y'all listened to the game; I certainly didn't. I did listen to some of the local (Athens) talking heads on the radio, and the consensus among them is that the two bad games that Sundiata has had have been losses. That isn't great, but it may be something CDF can't help. The other thing is 70 turnovers in the last three games; almost half of them last night. Just a guess, but if you turn it over, you don't have a chance to "pound it down low". You can't do that unless you can pass the ball; you can pull up and jack up a three. Maybe we were just desperate.

Well we just lost to Tulane. I'm starting to think we'll be lucky to win 8 games.
