The Diamond Dogs took two of three from Ole Miss last weekend to preserve a three game lead in the SEC standings. If they keep picking up two out of three over the next two weekends, the Dawgs are heading for a SEC crown, a prime national seed, and will host a regional and super regional in the race for Omaha.Three things of note happened this weekend. First, the bottom of the order produced some runs. Lyle Allen, Matt Cerione, and Michael Demperio homered Sunday. Cerione and Demperio also had key RBIs in Friday night's nailbiting 5-4 win. Demperio's good luck didn't last long. He hurt his knee colliding with Ole Miss first baseman Matt Smith Sunday. Demperio was carried from the field and an MRI was ordered on his right knee. That doesn't sound good. Demperio may not have big offensive stats, but the guy is sterling at second base, fielding better than .960. Backup David Thoms will fill in until Demperio returns. Lastly, Josh Fields finally gave up an earned run Sunday. It was the first of the year for Fields. That's one earned run in 24 and 1/3 innings. Evidently, he is a human being, not a cyborg-human hybrid flameball thrower. Fields will now reportedly finally get a haircut. He vowed not to cut his hair until he gave up an earned run. I think he went up two hat sizes this year after growing that mane. My advice: read the story of Samson, Joshua. Avoid the barber.
The Ole Miss series win was another big step forward in the SEC race. The Dawgs can all but wrap up the conference title with two out of three this weekend in Nashville. If we drop the series, there will be some pressure on us for the final home series with Alabama. It would be nice to have a coronation against Bama rather than be scoreboard watching, grinding out a conference title. Even if that were the case, I like our odds with Vandy traveling to UF and South Carolina hosting Tennessee.
Georgia Tech comes to Foley Field Wednesday night. The Dawgs hope to even up the season series with a win.

Update: Demperio is out for the season with a torn ACL. Yikes.

Having known him when he was in high school, I can all but guarantee that if anyone on the Georgia team has read the story of Samson, it's Joshua Fields.
