TV Rumor: FSS to pick up 2 SEC games in September

TV rumor yesterday (ht - ScenicCityDawg) was that FSS had agreed to televise two non-conference SEC home games in September this year. (which I assume includes the Aug. 30th opening week). Dean Legge of DawgPost.com confirmed the rumor on The Porch message board.

The eligible games of interest (meaning games not already projected for TV include:
    Week 1:
    Georgia Southern at UGA
-- The last UGA vs GSU game in 2004 was televised on FSN at 3:00.

    Week 2:
    Tulane at Alabama
    Southern Miss at Auburn
    Central Michigan at Georgia
-- One of these games will be Raycom Sports (formerly LF Sports) and the other will be FSS. I'd guess that we'll be on LF Sports, and S. Miss at Auburn will be on FSS.

    Week 3:
    UAB at Tennessee

    Week 4:
    No realistic options

    Week 5:
    UAB at South Carolina
If I'm FSS, I take a game in Week 2 with my first choice. Then I decide between GSU vs. Top 4 UGA in Week 1 or UAB at Tennessee in Week 3. UAB/UT should be a better game, but the Vols may not be undefeated by Week 3 following their season opener at UCLA.

The UT at UCLA game is no gimme. To the best of my knowledge....no SEC team has won at a Pac 10 stadium since 1997.
    2007 - UT at Cal - L
    2006 - ARK at USC - L
    2003 - AU at USC - L
    2002 - MSU at Oregon - L
    1999 - Bama at UCLA - L
    1997 - UT at UCLA - W
I'm an idiot. Thanks Tom. I knew that didn't look right.

LSU has won twice in a Pac 10 stadium in that time period. At both Arizona schools.

9/6/03 at Arizona W 59-13
9/10/05 at Arizona St W 35-31*

*the ASU game was the relocated "Katrina" game

Doubt that FSN as any SEC TV Rights once CBS kicks off on 9/13.

Look for these the 1st 2 weeks

Does FSS or FSN have rights to the SOCON games? If so, couldn't they air the GSU vs. UGA game as the SOCON game of the week?
I thought one of the regional networks televised GSU, Furman, App St, etc. fairly regularly.

Conference only own home games.

So SOCON wouldn't have any juice with a game in Athens.

I would think that the Central Michigan game would get more press. CMU is no slouch--they've been contenders for MAC championships in the last several years (did they win last year?), produced some NFL-caliber talent, gone to bowl games over the last few years, etc. It's not compelling for primetime, but there's no reason it couldn't be on FSN or a Thurs. night ESPN2 matchup.

!Subtle Playoff Humor Alert!

What I'm most scared about is the "mission creep" of Fox. First it starts out as 2 games and they're saying "it's just out of conference games guys" and then the next thing you know, we're splashed all over Big Daddy Fox on Saturday with their announcers screwing up UGA players' names and mistaking the Dawgs for Florida.

Mission creep is alive at Fox. Beware.

No, seriously, I'll take Raycom any day over giving Fox any chance to broadcast another SEC game.

seth - re: CMU game

We don't play Thursday Night games in Athens. It's a logistical impossibility with school in session due to the size of the stadium, limited availability of parking, scope of our fan tailgates, etc.

The only way we'd ever play a Thursday Night game in Athens would be a Thanksgiving affair.

As for why not ESPN2, it's simply a question of what other games are happening that day. I don't have the list in front of me, but there are better games to televise for ESPN.

I work at Raycom-owned station, WALB in Albany. Raycom just announced their September lineup.

RAYCOM SPORTS can confirm the games for the first three weeks of the 2008 SEC Football season.

8/30 HAWAII AT FLORIDA

9/6 SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI AT AUBURN

9/13 UAB AT TENNESSEE

Whatdaya think this means for the FSS games?
