2008 MLB Draft : Dawgs Projected 1st Round

Today's USAToday featured a sports section cover story on Thursday's 2008 Major League Baseball draft. The magazine opted to focus on a trio of players from the State of Georgia in Gordon Beckham (UGA Shortstop), Josh Fields (UGA Relief Pitcher) and Tim Beckham (HS superstar and likely #1 overall selection from Griffin).

Both G. Beckham (Top 10) and Fields (Top 25 or so) are projected to be first round draft picks. Unfortunately, the Atlanta Braves don't have a first round pick due to their trade with the Mets to get Glavine.

MLB coverage and High School baseball recruiting are definitely not my areas of emphasis here because I know little about the topics. However, I have glanced around at some mock drafts, and I thought you might be interested.
  • MLB.com - Beckham 8th (White Sox) and Fields 26th (Diamondbacks)
  • Baseball America - Beckham 8th (White Sox) and Fields 16th (Brewers).
  • MyMLBDraft -- Beckham 5th (Giants) and Fields (16th Brewers).
And in a wildly off topic turn of events...the MLB draft will start with a unique "draft" of Negro League greats who will represent current clubs. It's a much cooler article than I'm making it sound.

If you're looking for news on how Perno's incoming recruits fair in tomorrow's draft, I guess you will probably find that in the Friday or Saturday edition of the Athens Banner Herald. I haven't got a clue in that area.

Baseball Prospectus's mock draft has Beckham 5th (Giants) and Fields not drafted in the first 30 picks (oddly enough).

We didn't trade our first round pick to the Mets; we lost it to them as compensation for signing Glavine (as they offered arbitration [knowing we'd sign him]). If we'd offered Andruw arbitration, the Dodgers would have owed us their first round pick (I think; I'm not sure if Andruw would have been Class A after last season); however, Andruw would probably have accepted, so we couldn't run that chance. We do have pick #40; Baseball Prospectus has us picking Xavier Avery.

Beckham is going number one, I just hope he as good as everyone says he is . The Rays have messed this pick up before

Say goodbye to Mr. Avery folks. He just got picked early in the 2nd round by Baltimore. Damn.
