Travel Advisory: UGA at LSU

Planes: Right now, AirTran and Delta have *exceptional* deals on flights from Atlanta to New Orleans on Friday, Oct. 24th returning on Oct. 26th. Deals start at $218 + various fees. That's about as cheap as flights to NOLA get these days. It's particularly cheap given the rising cost of fuel. (ht - irondawg)

Trains: As a commenter pointed out, you can take the Amtrak Crescent Line from ATL to New Orleans. It's about an 11 hour ride, but it's fairly scenic. I had a friend take the trip last year, and she said that you can bring coolers and booze on the train. She enjoyed it. The fare is $116 / person round trip, and they have 10-15% discounts for senior citizens.

As a point of comparison, you could expect to pay $150-210 per car for gas if you were to drive to New Orleans from Atlanta (total round trip) depending on the vehicle's fuel efficiency.

Automobiles: You can get rental cars in New Orleans for dirt cheap on HotWire.com. That'll get you to the game in Baton Rouge. I picked up a full-sized car for $25/day via that site. There were deals for closer to $17/day a few weeks ago for smaller vehicles.

Good luck.

Don't forget Amtrak; the Crescent is currently $58 (each way) from ATL to NOL on those dates.

Something to note about the trains is that you can only bring booze on if you have a private room. If you're in a coach seat, you'll have to buy it from the snack car (though I'm not sure how strict they are on that policy...I doubt it would be very hard to get around).

Also, the Crescent now goes straight back to Atlanta. A few years ago, you had to go through Chicago to get back to Atlanta on Amtrak. It would have been nice to have that option when my buddy's car broke down in Baton Rouge during the UGA/LSU baseball series in 2004. We ended up having to rent a car one-way to the Atlanta airport to get back.

Yeah, the train ride is a blast. We took it from ATL to New Orleans for the '02 Sugar Bowl and it was full of Dawg fans. The train actually ran out of food and beer about 2 hours away from New Orleans.
