SC Game: Defensive Miscues 1st Half

Earlier today, I mentioned that I was spending some time looking at the film to get my head around how close we were to having a much, much better day. Below is a look at the 1st half defensive miscues. I don't list a play where one dude just totally beats the other dude (except the TD play). Offensive miscues from the first half were discussed earlier.

First Half Defensive Miscues

Drive 1

No miscues

Drive 2

3rd and 12 from SC 18

Penalty

Late hit on QB. Bad call. Looked like a great play by Bryan Evans. On the same play SC 's offensive tackle #78 tackles Justin Houston but no call.

Cost UGA 15 yards of field position when we eventually got the ball back 3 plays later via punt.

Drive 3

2nd and 11 SC 40

Penalty

Defensive holding by Asher Allen. This was an uncatchable ball, but that doesn’t matter for defensive holding. This was a good call, and Asher was clearly in the wrong. He doesn’t have to hold there if he uses the sideline better.

Cost 1st down. (Next play defender interferes with Allen, but no call). SC Punts on this drive.

Drive 4

Kickoff

Kickoff Coverage

Blair Walsh kicks to the 14 yard line. Kick returned to the 38 yard line. Lousy kick. Lousy coverage.

2nd and 4 UGA 34

Touchdown

Remarcus Brown beaten for a 34 yard TD. Brown appeared made the mistake of watching the QB instead of watching the man…before the ball was in the air. He has the speed to keep up with the WR if just runs with him. Reshad Jones had to choose to cover the TE or the WR. He picked wrong, but either way he was screwed. Great design to the play by Spurrier, and Smelly sold it perfectly with his eyes.

Overall thoughts on the first half defensively
We had some penalties that didn't go our way, but for the most part we played well. I believe we only gave up 81 yards to the Gamecocks in the first half, and 34 of that was on one play. We did log three QB hurries by my count resulting in three incompletions.

The defense played very well in the first half overall.

I'll upload the 2nd Half Offensive and Defensive miscues tonight around midnight. I'm writing them now.

The heading is "offensive". Kidding, of course...the word defensive is misspelled. Thanks for doing this blog!

Thanks indeed for doing the blog, PWD. Always a good read, before and after the game.

On a side note, this was my first trip to Williams Brice. Decent place to see a game I suppose, but did anyone else notice that their video board is actually a Vizeo 46 inch widescreen LCD? And that their weight room looks like the one at my high school in the 80s? I have no idea how they recruit as well as they do to that place.
