SC Game: Offensive Miscues 1st Half

I was curious as to how often we screwed ourselves up in this one. So I'm going in and looking at at the film and attempting to track what went wrong. I'm not listing a "miscue" as a player getting beaten by a better player or a well designed play.

It's more of mental / execution thing. I'm not a football coach, nor do I pretend to be one. So take all of this with a grain of salt.

Drive 1

1st and 10 SC 37

Sack

Miscommunication between Chris Davis and Vince Vance results in 9 yard loss.

3rd and 12 SC 39

Incomplete pass.

Chandler drops it on the 21 yard line.

Cost offense 17 yards, and likely FG. Instead, UGA punts.

Drive 2

3rd and 4 UGA 28

Incomplete pass.
Chandler drops it on the UGA 38 yard line. Norwood did deflect the pass a little bit, but Chandler still needs to make that play on 3rd down in an SEC game.

Cost offense 10 yards and a first down. End of possession.

Drive 3

3rd and 7 UGA 20

Penalty

Off sides by Kiante Tripp. Now 3rd and 12.

3rd and 12 UGA 15

Interception (INT later overturned)

This was a close call, but UGA got the benefit of the doubt by the refs on this one. It could’ve easily been a non-call by the refs resulting in change of possession. However, interference call was overturned and gave UGA a 1st down. This essentially erased Tripp’s offside violation.

1st and 10 UGA 40

Penalty

Chapas called for dead ball personal foul. Knowshon jumped up after the play and Norwood fell into him as Chapas bumped him. It was a bogus call. This pushes us back to our own 25.

3rd and 8 SC 25

Incompletion

After moving the ball well for several plays, Stafford throws a pass into the endzone. Kris Durham doesn’t catch it despite getting both hands on it.

Cost UGA a TD. UGA kicks FG on next play. Net loss of 4 points.

Drive 4

1st and 10 UGA 20

Incompletion

Pass intended for AJ Green. Stafford overthrew it. Stafford audibled into this play after seeing that SC had 9 in the box. Mohamed Massaquoi was wide open and Stafford didn’t see him. Everything about this play is fixable. Stafford completed the next pass for 1st down. No cost to this miscue.

1st and 10 UGA 30

Incompletion

Chandler didn’t catch it. It was a small window and a great defensive play, but Chandler could’ve caught it. Bigger issue…#99 for SC hit Stafford later than Bryan Evans hit Smelley earlier in the game. No penalty. Stafford should’ve sold the late hit better.

No cost. Stafford ran for 1st down on the next play.

1st and 10 UGA 47

Incompletion

Tavarres King dropped it. Stafford threw it too low. Mutual blame on this one. The good news is that Stafford read it perfectly. The DB covering King was on a CB blitz. A little better throw, and this is complete.

No cost because Massaquoi caught the next pass for 1st down.

1st and 10 SC 43

Fumble

Stafford sacked. Didn’t read the CB blitz. Had Stafford read it right, there was a wide open WR for a massive gain. Bigger question. Why have we passed the ball virtually every down this drive? Even when there were only 6 in the box?

Cost 7 yards.

2nd and 17 UGA 50

Penalty

Busted screen play goes for 2 yards. Chris Davis called for holding. Now, it’s 2nd and 27.

Cost. Nothing because AJ Green bails us out on 3rd and 21 with a 39 yard reception on an amazing play.

2nd and Goal SC 5

Run Play comes up short for TD

Richard Samuel missed the hole completely and ran right into the Carolina defense on the 2 yard line. Blocked perfectly. Moreno was used as a decoy. It wasn’t a bad idea except that everyone who has seen Hoosiers knows that you don’t use Jimmy Chitwood as a decoy when it matters the most. Confusing use of our talent.

Cost TD. We kick the FG two plays later. Net loss of 4 points.

3rd and Goal SC 1

Penalty

Illegal Snap. Chris Davis flinched.

Cost 5 yards.

3rd and Goal SC 6

Run play for no yards.

Stafford audibled into a run keeper on the zone read. Bad call by him. A debacle. UGA settles for FG.

NOTES ON DRIVE 4:

The drive went 10 plays before Moreno had a rushing attempt. The only 2 rushing attempts prior to that were a QB keeper by Stafford for 17 yards and a 6 yard run by Caleb King on 2nd and 27. Overall, the drive went 15 plays and covered 8 minutes. Moreno has to get more than 3 total touches out of 15 in a drive of this nature. This was a case of not utilizing our best weapons. It could’ve been much worse without a great play by Stafford and Green on the 39 yard reception.

1st Half Offensive Thoughts:
Miscues cost us about 11 points.

  • Chandler’s first drop likely cost us a field goal.
  • Durham’s endzone drop cost us a TD which was a net loss of 4 points after the FG.
  • The debacle at the goal line in drive four (penalties, dumb play calls, bad execution and a bad audible) cost us another TD. Net loss of 4 points after the FG.

Most of this is fixable. These weren’t problems related to talent. These were problems of execution that can be fixed with repetition. Some of the execution problems can also be fixed by moving away from YMCA Ball and having our best players touching the ball on our biggest snaps.

With reasonable execution improvements, the score of this one could’ve easily been 17-7 instead of 6-7. However, if the INT isn't overturned and Stafford/Green don't connect on third and forever, we give SC a chance for at least 3 more points.

I know all the usual lines about "these are kids", "they're not professionals", "this is supposed to be fun", etc.

And believe me, I don't like to call out individuals.

But...

Trip Chandler frustrates me more than any Dawg since Quincy.

Please, coaches, lets give Figgins and White some more reps on passing downs.

I couldn't agree more about the "YMCA ball." And it would be nice to see some ohter TE get a chance to catch a ball. Although, maybe they did and just didnt get open or thrown to.

I'm OK with the play to Samuel on 2nd down. It was a great call and Samuel just didn't finish his part. Still two tries for Moreno... but Davis (his worst game ever?) false starts.

Not to dog on Chandler, but a catch on that first drive changes the entire complexion of that game. The first drive was the best Georgia moved the ball the entire game, and if Georgia had scored a touchdown there and gained some momentum, South Carolina would have likely quit soon after. Instead, they scuffled along and couldn't ever regain the momentum that was lost. Saying that only cost three points is a conservative assessment of what it really meant.

Chandler has serious issues with his hands. Have him block or play speacial teams. Its time to pull the plug on him catching anything anymore.

I could not agree more about having our best receivers in the game in key situations. Its not the time to make sure everyone plays. This has to hurt our timing with the QB and receivers when we are rotating 8 different guys out there.

Everyone remember the SC game last year? Chandler had huge drops in that game as well. Is he dating a SC cheerleader or something?

I also am not overly concerned by this game. The SC game is always brutal like this. I just hope we can massively improve from here.
