Kentucky is a MUST win for bowl selections

If UGA wins out, we're going to the CapitalOne Bowl in Orlando versus most likely Michigan State. There's an outside shot at facing Ohio State, but it requires several long shot scenarios to fall into place.

However, if we lose a variety of problematic scenarios start to unfold.
  • Kentucky's Upside - If the Wildcats (6-3) win tomorrow, they are well positioned to finish 9-3. They host Vanderbilt next week, and they get a week off after that to get ready for a game in Neyland Stadium against a struggling Volunteer squad. UK has only played in one New Year's Day bowl since Bear Bryant left in the early 1950s. If they win out, they would be more attractive to the Capital One, Outback and Cotton Bowls than UGA because of fan enthusiasm. Additionally, Outback Steakhouse's founder (a UK Alum/Booster) is an active member of the Tampa sports group that created the Outback Bowl.

  • South Carolina's Upside - The Gamecocks are currently 6-3 with games remaining vs Arkansas, at Florida and at Clemson. It's entirely reasonable to see the Chickens going 8-4 against that slate. As I understand it, the SEC Bowl selection rules will allow a bowl to pick a team with a lesser record as long as its only 1 conference loss behind the higher ranked team. That means the Outback Bowl could (and likely would) select South Carolina over UGA if LSU or UK were in the Capital One Bowl.

  • The Bottom Dropping Out - A loss to the Wildcats could send an already disappointed UGA squad off the deep end, and set up an upset to the Yellow Jackets or Aubies.
The team still has a lot to play for in terms of bowl seeding. I'd wager that being in Atlanta for the Chick-Fil-A Bowl is totally unappealing. To avoid that, we need to take care of business.

Besides...there's always the outside shot of tangling with The Ohio State Suckeyes in Orlando. If you want to see that, pull for Illinois to de-pants the tOSU again in two weeks.

PWD, I wish kicking around various scenarios in my head and this one popped up and, to be honest, I don't think it's that much of a stretch. It's a stretch, but not too badly...

1. UGA wins out.
2. Florida is upset in 1 of its three remaining regular season games and then loses to Bama in the SECC.
3. Bama plays for the MNC and UGA gets selected for the Sugar.

Honestly, with a healthy Cody, it's not unheard of to think that Bama could beat the Gators in the SECC. Florida has had O-line problems all year and if Bama can do what UGA couldn't (i.e. run the damn ball), then they could keep the UF Offense off the field long enough to keep the score low.

Of course, a Cap. One appearance is most likely, but for all those saying "there's nothing left to play for," in my opinion, there's still plenty left on the table. We just need to win out and hope for 1 or 2 lucky breaks.

Am I crazy here?

Once we lost the game in Jax I was pulling for the chaos theory and hoping there are many upsets out there. I know the Capital One Bowl basically is as high as we can go and it would be nice to blow out a Big 10 pretender. We lose one of these next three games and "disappointment" will not be a strong enough word.

"Outback Steakhouse's founder is an active member of the Tampa sports group that created the Outback Bowl."

I'm not sure what you mean by that. Is he a KY alum?

"de-pants"? Shouldn't that be "pants". As in to pull their knickers up over their heads causing mucho embaresment...or something like that.

Is the Cotton Bowl completely out this year? I know they traditionally pick from the West, but that is slim pickings. At least we could play a Big 12 team....

Yeah...he's a UK booster. I thought I typed that. Sorry for the confusion. It's been added.

I'd love to play in the Cotton, but the truth is that I'd be scared to see our DBs against Texas Tech, UT or OU.

My stomach just flipped thinking about that.

Could that Sugar Bowl scenario that ludakit was talking about still possibly happen if Bama were to lose to LSU this weekend and to UF in the SECCG?

Kyle,

To answer your question with my opinion, I'd say no. The reason is because of how badly Alabama beat UGA earlier in the season and how well Alabama fans travel.

If 'Bama has the opportunity to even sniff a BCS Bowl, the committee will take them. Too much money to turn down not to.

In order for us to make a BCS, we have to have an SEC team in the MNC and that team would have to be Alabama. Unless Alabama wets the bed against LSU and then against Auburn, but then loses to Florida in the SECC. Then, I'd say it's possible.

I'm not saying it's a mortal lock for ANYTHING to happen, but just reminding everyone that with 4 regular season weeks left, there's still a lot that could happen.

I think the only way we go to the CapitalOne Bowl is for there to be two SEC BCS teams (Bama and Florida). I'd love to see a UGA v. tOSU game as I think it could really jump start next year, and keep our heads up. With the way Illinois got worked by USC last year, and the fact that OSU already got beat by USC this year, I think the Rose Bowl committee would be hard pressed to take a very weak OSU game. I realize they love the Big 11 v. Pac-10 matchup, but it really doesn't make sense to see the same game twice, especially when it won't be close.

That makes sense. Thanks Kit.

The BCS is over for us. I think the sugar is hoping that florida goes to the NC game and Bama falls in their lap. Bama hasnt been to the sugar in a while and they would travel a ton of fans there.

CapOne would be nice but I just can't see winning out. Doesn't look like a likely destination to me.

Colt Brennan's Nightmare

http://www.bulldawgblawg.com/2008/01/colt-brennans-nightmare.html

Has been deleted from youtube

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjFgNP394XY

It is one of the greatest Georgia Bulldogs youtube videos ever. I know most have probably seen this but maybe don't have it downloaded.

I saw that texasdawgfan converted the video to a mp4 back then. But the link is of course dead.

So, I figured we all needed some hype and motivation. I get pumped up every time I see this video. Lets get fired up, we still have some fight left.

Lets win out and get back to the Sugar Bowl. Like ludakit said there is still a chance we can get to the Sugar Bowl. So lets kick some ass and give Kentucky, Auburn, and Georgia Tech their worse nightmare. We can kick some ass with huge beat downs by winning by 30-40 points in every game.

So in a tribute to ugamummra and the www.bulldawgblawg.com I've decided to convert the youtube video that I've saved on my computer as a mp4 that I got from the bulldawgblawg link from the texasdawgfans conversion and went ahead and just converted it again to a mp4 so everyone can put it on their ipod or just have it on their computer to watch.

Remember the link is only good for 24 hours. It's cbnightmare.mp4 (17380 Kb) it takes a about 10 seconds for the download to appear. It will have a green arrow with the download.

Here's the link for Colt Brennan's Nightmare

http://media-convert.com/convert/?xid=17-xjvytdsp

Maybe PWD could figure out how to get that video back. ah nevermind, it's not on youtube anymore.

Keep up the great work PWD. As always love the blog

Spending New Years in NOLA again sure beats playing a Big 10 team in Orlando. Especially the way this season has played out. Go DAWGS!

Hell yes, that is great stuff. Thanks for doing this. And thanks to the person who originally posted this on youtube and did this. Wish I could have seen the youtube of this online but this played good on my computer. I don't have a Ipod. It played on my apple quicktime player and looked really nice. I've done watched this over 4 times and love it. Got me fired up to win out and maybe just maybe get back to the Sugar again this year.

That video was awesome! I miss that defense.

That video is one of the best. I remember seeing that on youtube. Thanks for bringing that memory back up. And thanks for the download, I moved it to my itunes movies folder and the mp4 works on my ipod. I too miss that defense.

well, since everybody seems to be drinking the Sugar Bowl laced with cyanide. I think I should mention that I'm not ready to commit suicide right now

Anonymous said...

I'm drinking big gulps of the Sugar Bowl cause I damn sure hope we go. I'll take my chance with the bowl being laced with poison. Cause I have faith that Georgia will win out and that bowl will be fruitful and prosperous. Ha... did that sound right, the fruitful and prosperous part?

This year's D, with the loss of Washington, Owens, Johnson, and of course Howard, is much weaker than the '07 version. Going into the season, many thought our D, with 9 returning starters and some young studs emerging, may be among the best in the country. Now it looks as if we may drop to being one of the worst in the SEC. Injuries and such aside, Martinez has done one of his poorest coaching jobs this year. Whether it's scheme, play-calling, or preparation, we have been a disappointment when it has mattered the most.

Now with that said, we lose 3 starters off this D (assuming Owens returns) and we get Washington back. What we need, more than anything, is to develop a serious rush from the ends and preserve the GA tradition of Pollack, Tardits, etc, etc.

I have been defending Martinez all season but I am done. He needs to go back to school. Our D is weak at best. Kentuky is killing us. That is sad.

3:55 left. Let's see what we can do. Right now this has been a total breakdown of a...MoMass!

Anonymous said...

Stafford + A.J Green = what a play!

Anonymous said...

Greatful for a win, but that was one of the worst performances from our defense AND special teams in the same game I have ever seen. UK isn't bad, but we made them look great. We shouldn't be having these same breakdowns 10 games in to the season. After watching this I am nervous about Auburn and worried about tech. It's like we never had an answer for the option or really whenever the quarterback wanted to run.

Still it's bettar than losing to Wyoming.

Worst UGA D since Cool Breeze was calling the shots in '99.
42 to Bama
38 to LSU
49 to Florida
38 to UK

We're now up to almost 30 points a game given up in SEC play.

Just looked it up: that '99 D gave up 25.5 in SEC play. Unless we shut out Auburn, the '08 will pass those horrid totals.
