Auburn hires Gus Malzahn as OC

Much like ol' Westerdawg predicted. Auburn wasn't going to hire Stacy Searels as offensive coordinator because they couldn't afford an unproven guy calling plays. Chizik needed to make a splash, and he did with the Malzahn hire.

More later.

Wow. Wonder what Pat Dye thinks of THAT.

Splash...more like a drip.

Interesting hire... full-throttle offense, defense-minded HC, Springfield Mafia and interesting games with Ole Miss.

Somewhere, Tony Franklin is having an aneurysm.

They still don't have QB that will work in that type of offense.

Cody Burns throwing the ball 300+ times just makes me Smile ;)*

Pardon my ignorance, but why is this a big splash? Tulsa isn't exactly a football powerhouse...Yes they have a decent offense, but so did Hawaii in 2007...

In other news, Chavis to LSU. Thoughts?

Huh. Too bad we didn't need a defensive coordinator >cough<.

How good would Hawaii have been had it had a defense? Auburn should have a very good defense.

I do not see Malzahn's offense as being gimmicky--but then neither is the spread really. It still comes down to getting the players to play and having a system that fits the talent you have or getting the talent in or adjusting the offense to the talent until you can implement the full offense.

Auburn should certainly be able to get the talent at QB with a fellow of Malzahn's reputation. Malzahn was screwed by Nutt and Arkansas.

I think he is a name that provides Auburn fans with something to cling to.

Time will tell, remember few thought the spread would work in the SEC.

Well, but it did have to be modified. Urban's first version led to a lot of sacks of his QB at the time, Leak, who was certainly not fond of getting hit.

PWD,

Check it.

(If the CJ forum at the Rant isn't in your regular blogs/sites rotation already, it should be.)

Still only good enough to score 10 points in the Sugar Bowl. Hawaii's problem wasn't its defense, it was the enormous talent gap between the programs.

the problem is that Tony Franklin should have been able to get the talent at qb there as well. He got screwed by Tubberville and Auburn.

They are going thru the people who literally wrote the books on the spread. I see this ending just as bad as the Franklin deal did

Urban's first version also won the SEC and a BCS title. The key was Urban's ability to adapt to the personnel (and a very, very good defense).

Last year, the UF defense was bad and the QB won the Heisman.

This year, the QB was a Heisman finalist and they are playing for a BCS title.

I would say the spread worked out just fine in the SEC.

The Hawaii defense could not stop a good offensive team even during the regular season. They struggled with Washington for instance.
